Hidden Hydrology COIL's 'Lost Rivers' Studio Sessions COIL's "Lost Rivers" sessions were recorded during the Winter period of December 1995- February 1996 at COIL's own "Slut's Hole" studio in London. The day-long sessions were part of what ultimately became the "A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room" album (at least as far as the vinyl pressing of that album went), though were apparently very rushed recordings (Jhonn later claimed that the full vocal version was written and recorded in one day to meet the “Succour” compilation deadline - Jhonn’s wraparound vocals were not redone for the BLD track). Around this winter time Jhonn Balance received a fax from David Tibet containing evocative passages from the Crackanthorpe "Vignettes" journal, originally published 100 years earlier (1896). Jhonn loved the sections he read and swiftly used passages as lyrics for the recording sessions to meet the Succour deadline (lifting text from the ‘On Chelsea Embankment’ and “In Richmond Park” sections of the small book). At the very same time as recording this track, the official (and long-awaited) 2nd Edition of the Nicholas Barton book called "The Lost Rivers of London" appeared in the bookshops of the city.

The History/Literature Problem in First World War Studies Nicholas Milne-Walasek Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a doctoral degree in English Literature Department of English Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Nicholas Milne-Walasek, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 ii ABSTRACT In a cultural context, the First World War has come to occupy an unusual existential point half- way between history and art. Modris Eksteins has described it as being “more a matter of art than of history;” Samuel Hynes calls it “a gap in history;” Paul Fussell has exclaimed “Oh what a literary war!” and placed it outside of the bounds of conventional history. The primary artistic mode through which the war continues to be encountered and remembered is that of literature—and yet the war is also a fact of history, an event, a happening. Because of this complex and often confounding mixture of history and literature, the joint roles of historiography and literary scholarship in understanding both the war and the literature it occasioned demand to be acknowledged. Novels, poems, and memoirs may be understood as engagements with and accounts of history as much as they may be understood as literary artifacts; the war and its culture have in turn generated an idiosyncratic poetics. It has conventionally been argued that the dawn of the war's modern literary scholarship and historiography can be traced back to the late 1960s and early 1970s—a period which the cultural historian Jay Winter has described as the “Vietnam Generation” of scholarship.

  • THE POLITICAL SYSTEM – CHANGES DURING the ELECTION CAMPAIGNS the Search for a New Political Model
Part 1. THE POLITICAL SYSTEM – CHANGES DURING THE ELECTION CAMPAIGNS The search for a new political model. Putin as the national leader – a change in status and a possible change in the configuration of the political system. A change in the weight of different political institutions All of 2007 was characterized by the competition between two projects that can conditionally be called “successor” and “third term”. At that, supporters and opponents of the latter scheme belonged to different groups among the elites, which added a distinctive sharpness to the situation and this manifested itself not only in an ideological but also an administrative confrontation. The search for a place for Vladimir Putin in the “post-Putin” system of checks and balances started after the 1st of October when he agreed to head the United Russia party list. Before this, in spite of many statements by the head of state himself about his unwillingness to go against the Constitution and run for president for a third term, projects that entailed changing the Constitution predominated. The main lobbyists for the “third term” project were the so called “siloviki” or the security wing of the presidential administration that were headed by deputy head of the presidential administration, Igor Sechin. In the media, the main voice on this topic was the head of the Federation Council and leader of the party Fair Russia Sergey Mironov. This politician is considered to be in the orbit of this group of elites. Nevertheless, his wavering to meet the “party line” was evident. In particular, at the end of March in 2007, he increased his activity in this direction1.

SVILOVA | WILLIAM BASINSKI DISINTEGRATION LOOP 1.1 WILLIAM BASINSKI JUNE 18–JULY 31, 2014 www.svilova.org 1 SVILOVA | WILLIAM BASINSKI SCALE BE THY KING: THE BLACK Mirror OF William Basinski By David Keenan 1. Scalle Bee Thie Kynge. There is a magical idea, rarely articulated, that imagination is the world-creating matrix of desire, in other words that imagination is what translates a sensation into a thought. Disintegration Loops, still the central, emblematic work of the artist and composer William Basinski, conflates the biological with the constructed, the historical with the personal, by a creative act of imagination that would attempt to mimic the function of memory via accidental processes of auto-forgetting while connecting it with historical trauma –the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers as a head wound – and romantic portraiture, through the back cover recreation of Henry Wallis’s 1856 painting, The Death Of Chatterton, with Basinski posed as the dead 18th Century English poet, who poisoned himself in 1770, aged 17. Thomas Chatterton’s reputation as a forger of mystical poetry is of note here. From the age of 12 onwards he produced a run of strange, visionary verse that he claimed was the work of a 15th century monk of his own invention, Thomas Rowley. Indeed, a particular adjective, “Rowliean”, has been coined to describe the works of this historical figment, this shade birthed of an intoxicated imagination. Rowley’s verse is difficult, its language being largely derived from Chatterton’s study of the English philologist John Kersey’s Dictionarium Anglo-Britannicum, “comprehending a brief explication of all sorts of difficult words”.

Moving beyond existing criticism which argues that the zombie transforms to fit each generation’s specific fears, I argue that zombie movies, novels, and video games from George A. Romero-onwards continually speak to a distrust of science and scientific progress while additionally romanticizing the post-apocalyptic landscape. Consequently, the zombie’s unprecedented mainstream popularity over the last fifteen years could be read as symptomatic of this distrust intensifying, paralleling an increasing politicization of science and a rise in apocalyptic thinking within the public sphere.
