CARNEY Department of Geography, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA 90095 ABSTRACT.—The African diaspora to the Americas was one of plants as well as people. European slavers provisioned their human cargoes with African and other Old World useful plants, which enabled their enslaved work force and free ma- roons to establish them in their gardens. Africans were additionally familiar with many Asian plants from earlier crop exchanges with the Indian subcontinent. Their efforts established these plants in the contemporary Caribbean plant corpus. The recognition of pantropical genera of value for food, medicine, and in the practice of syncretic religions also appears to have played an important role in survival, as they share similar uses among black populations in the Caribbean as well as tropical Africa. This paper, which focuses on the plants of the Old World tropics that became established with slavery in the Caribbean, seeks to illuminate the botanical legacy of Africans in the circum-Caribbean region. Litter Production and Decomposition in Cacao (Theobroma Cacao) and Kolanut (Cola Nitida) Plantations

P.O. Box 1992, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Abstract. Litter production and decomposition were studied at monthly intervals for two years in Cola nitida and Theo- broma cacao plantations at Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Three plantations of each economic tree crop were used for the study. Mean annual litter fall was 4.73±0.30 t ha-1 yr-1 (total): 3.13±0.16 t ha-1 yr-1 (leaf), 0.98±0.05 t ha-1 yr-1(wood), 0.46±0.12 t ha-1 yr-1 (reproductive: fruits and seeds), 0.17±0.03 t ha-1 yr-1 (finest litter) in T. cacao plantations and 7.34±0.64(total): 4.39±0.38 (leaf), 1.57±0.17 (wood), 1.16±0.13 (reproductive) and 0.22±0.01 (finest litter or trash) in C. nitida plantations. The annual mean litter standing crop was 7.22±0.26 t ha-1 yr-1 in T. cacao and 5.74±0.54 t ha-1 yr-1 in C. nitida plantations. Cola nitida leaf litter had higher decomposition rate quotient (2.00) than T. cacao leaf litter (1.03). Higher quantities of calcium, magnesium, potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, managenese, iron, zinc and copper were deposited on C. nitida than on T. cacao plantations. The low litter decomposition rates in these plantations implies accumulation of litter on the floor of these plantations especially T. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species, Acropogon mesophilus Munzinger & Gâteblé (Malvaceae, Sterculioideae), is described from New Caledo- nia. This species is endemic to non-ultramafic areas, along the southwestern coast of Grande-Terre. The species has large leaves, widely ovate to ovate, and entire, and might be confused with only two other endemic species, namely A. bullatus (Pancher & Sebert) Morat and A. veillonii Morat. However, A. mesophilus differs from the other two species most evidently by its leaves 3-nerved, flat, and with truncate to rounded bases, versus leaves 5-nerved, bullate, and with cordate bases. A line drawing and color photos are provided for the new species, along with a discussion of its morphological affinities and a preliminary risk of extinction assessment of Endangered. In spite of the remarkable morphological differences, the results indicated that the species are relatively uniform in their quantitative macromorphological characters except for the leaf shape and base which varied from elliptic, lanceolate to palmate and leaf base from cordate, obtuse to cunneate. The epidermal characters such as number of cells, anticlinal wall pattern, cell wall thickness and the stomata size varied among the species. The epidermal cells varied from polygonal to irregular while the anticlinal walls varied from straight to straight\curve and slightly curved. All the species except Cola nitida (Vent) Schott, Malachanta alnifolia (Bak) Pierre, Mansonia altissima (A.Chev) R.Capuron, Theobroma cacao Linn and Waltheria indica Linn are amphistomatic. Stomata types included anisocytic in T. cacao, laterocytic in C. hispida, anomocytic in C. millenni Schum, Staurocytic in C. nitida and paracytic in W. indica, M. altissima and Malacantha alnifolia. Transverse, tangential and radial longitudinal sections and macerated samples were prepared into microscopic slides. Characteristic similarity and disparity in the tissues arrangement as well as cell inclusions were noted for description and delimitation. All the five Cola species studied had essentially the same anatomical features, but the difficulty posed by the identification of Cola acuminata and Cola nitida when not in fruit could be resolved using anatomical features. Cola acuminata have extensive fibre and numerous crystals relative to Cola nitida, while Cola hispida and Cola millenii are the only species having monohydric crystals. Cola gigantica is the only species that have few xylem fibres while other species have extensive xylem fibre. -

Therefore, the present study is the first to provide information on the phytochemistry of leaves of . The Phytochemistry of the leaves was carried out using standard procedures. The results of the study revealed the presence of useful phytochemicals. AveragesC.nitida of 70.03 ± 23.34(mgQE/g), 22.96 C.± 7.65(mgGAE/g),acuminata 13.44 ± 4.48(mgTAE/g), 1.01 ± 0.34(mg/g), and 0.16 ± 0.05(mg/g) were the quantities of flavonoids, phenols, tannins, alkanoids and saponins in the leaf of respectively. Whereas, the leaf of contained 26.71 ± 12.24 (mgQE/g), 23.52 ± 7.84(mgGAE/g), 15.32 ± 5.11(mgTAE/g), 1.23 ± 0.41(mg/g) and 0.22 ± 0.07(mg/g) of flavonoids, phenols, tannins, alkanoids and saponins respectively. -

Study Design: Kola nuts were purchased in open markets within South Western, Nigeria. Place and Duration of Study: The samples were obtained in markets within Oyo, Osun and Ogun States, Nigeria between November and December, 2012. Methodology: Kola nuts were sun-dried and pulverized. 3 g of each of the pulverized samples was extracted with acetonitrile saturated with hexane. Each of the extracts was subjected to clean-up followed by pesticide residue determination using HP 5890 II Gas Chromatograph. Results: Result show that, 50% of kola nuts samples obtained from Oyo State contained chlordane residue ranging from nd – 0.123 µg kg-1; all the samples from Osun State had chlordane residue ranging from 0.103 to 0.115 µg kg-1 while 70% of kola nuts from Ogun State had chlordane residues (nd – 0.12 µg kg-1). -

Phenolics and flavonoids contents were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum trichloride methods, respectively.
