All in all it has yet again been an interesting, challenging The entire landscape of High performance in Australian and exciting year, not to mention the first significant amount baseball has changed the way it has looked over the past of government funding to assist in building a purpose built decade and continues to evolve with the recent changes facility for baseball. in how our sport will be funded.

The Australian Sports Commission has changed the way in Nathan Davison which it measures sports and their success, and baseball has Performance Director unfortunately been one sport that has had a significant reduction on how it is funded at the high performance level. This was expected and plans have been in place since the demise of the Sports Institute to have a self-sustainable High performance Program.

SABA has been a success and will continue to further evolve into its own self-sustainable program in order to provide one step in the pathway of baseballers in the state.

Well done to Warwick Marks, his coaches and team of administrators who have made the program a success in its first two years of existence.

Participation across the board in baseball in Australia has shown approx. 10% increase at the grass roots level, and provided the key incentive and start point to the “Baseball Pathway” which shows a trail from beginners through to the top level of our game in Australia, the Australian Baseball League. From there on to the National Team and hopefully professional baseball in the US.

We have had several of our players, both SASI and SABA graduates go on and sign professional contracts this past year and our best wishes go to all of them.

South Australia continues to lag behind the four major players in regard to results at the National Youth Championships. Plans are in place to have this change. Creating our own identity as a state remains the first and foremost objective and from that results will flow. To have this happen successfully it will take a holistic approach from all involved in baseball from the Australian Baseball League, to clubs, players, administrators, volunteers and supporters.

I would like to firstly take the opportunity to thank Lorraine Dunn for her time at Baseball SA.

Lorraine has been an invaluable part of the operation within Baseball SA and I wish her all the best in her retirement.

This year Division 1 went to a 30 game competition. The draw was set out so that the top 6 teams of the 2011-12 season would play off against each other 3 times whilst competing against the remaining 7 teams twice. This structure would then be repeated within the second half of the ladder in a bid to strengthen the competition from top to bottom.

DIVISION ONE With the access to Norwood Oval we saw local club competition return to the home of baseball. This enabled DIV2U15 us to hold a showcase round between the final 6 sides of 2011-2012 year play off at Norwood oval, with the replay of DIV3 Div 6 the grand final being played under lights. Change is most often met with resistance, but in most cases needed to ensure sustainability.

Season 12/13 has been very much about directional change. The League is still at a critical stage of our transitional phase of making sound decisions that will positively influence the game that is not only played but how we are perceived in the market place. Positioning of the league in a crowded amature demographic takes more than the just honest club loving volunteers. It is imperative for the league to support and develop initiatives that can build sustainable models to increase player participation and reduce costs that burden clubs.

National perception of our league is changing, both on and off. At this years NYC, it was evident that players pride themselves as baseballers on the diamond with a growing competitive nature and a professional look and attitude off the diamond.

We, the baseball community still have so much more to achieve, we still need to flight for recognition at Government level, both State and Federal. We need to ensure Clubs’ remain cash positive and can not only survive year on year but focus on building, planning and positioning for continuance and growth. This is one of the single areas of deficiencies we have as a sport, both Clubs’ and BSA seem at times to be disjointed in their outlook, demands and requirements. Clearly this is a focus for BSA to strive towards removing the barriers.

The recent Diamond Sports category 4 grant by ORS is step one in a task to bring two opposing codes together . The Board is focused on ensuring that the project delivers on every level, more importantly that this is a work in progress which provides for our members. This project will create opportunities for not only more participants and more games, but a solid tangible that can now attract corporate support, in the areas of sponsorship, services and goods. This tangible also increases our reach in search for National competitions and further afield to the Asian Pacific rim with schools, colleges and regional travelling teams. West Beach is one of many exciting prospects on our agenda as we collectively continue to build into a self sustaining league.

Our other area of responsibility concerns Historical Memorabilia. We are aware that there are several collections in various locations and our first task is to Catalogue these items to arrive at a complete list. Our aim was to create our very own museum but this has logistical problems which will not be easily overcome. We have decided to use modern technology to create our Museum and this will be achieved by creating our own Web Site specifically for that purpose. Work has already started in preparing the first stage and we will keep you informed with our progress. Apart from our Committee we are looking for volunteers to assist with the mammoth task of loading items on to the computer and will welcome any support.

We also recommend that all Clubs and Affiliated Bodies, City and Country, appoint their own Historian to preserve their Heritage. Some Clubs are well advanced in this regard while others have not started. We are planning to hold a Meeting of all Club Historians for the exchange of ideas and information to get us all on the same page working towards a common goal.
