A total of 95 taxa (including 58 taxa identi- fied as genera or species) of plant seeds were detected from 163 collected feces in 164 weekly sur- veys. Among them, eight taxa were selected as the food resources for the raccoon dogs in the Imperial Palace. The intakes of these taxa showed seasonal succession, i.e. Aphananthe aspera in January, Idesia polycarpa in February, Rubus hirsutus from May to July, Cerasus spp. in May and June, Morus spp. in June, Machilus thunbergii in July and August, Aphananthe aspera from Sep- tember to December until the following January, and also Ficus erecta in September and Celtis sinensis in December. In March and April, plant harvest is rather poor, and therefore raccoon dogs feed on the inside endosperm of Ginkgo biloba and family Fagaceae to supply the insufficient nutrients as observed by broken seed coats from feces.

  • Zbagl11, a Class D MADS-Box Transcription Factor of Zanthoxylum Bungeanum, Is Involved in Sporophytic Apomixis
Fei et al. Horticulture Research (2021) 8:23 Horticulture Research https://doi.org/10.1038/s41438-020-00459-x www.nature.com/hortres ARTICLE Open Access ZbAGL11, a class D MADS-box transcription factor of Zanthoxylum bungeanum, isinvolvedin sporophytic apomixis Xitong Fei1,2, Qianqian Shi1,YichenQi1,2, Shujie Wang1,2,YuLei1,2, Haichao Hu1,2, Yulin Liu1,2,TuxiYang1,2 and Anzhi Wei 1,2 Abstract Apomixis is a reproductive model that bypasses sexual reproduction, so it does not require the combination of paternal and maternal gametes but instead results in the production of offspring directly from maternal tissues. This reproductive mode results in the same genetic material in the mother and the offspring and has significant applications in agricultural breeding. Molecular and cytological methods were used to identify the reproductive type of Zanthoxylum bungeanum (ZB). Fluorescence detection of the amplified products of 12 pairs of polymorphic SSR primers showed consistent fluorescence signals for mother and offspring, indicating that no trait separation occurred during reproduction. In addition, the cytological observation results showed differentiation of ZB embryos (2n) from nucellar cells (2n) to form indefinite embryonic primordia and then form adventitious embryos (2n), indicating that the apomictic type of ZB is sporophytic apomixis. The MADS-box transcription factor ZbAGL11 was highly expressed during the critical period of nucellar embryo development in ZB. Unpollinated ZbAGL11-OE Arabidopsis produced fertile offspring and exhibited an apomictic phenotype. The overexpression of ZbAGL11 increased the callus induction 1234567890():,; 1234567890():,; 1234567890():,; 1234567890():,; rate of ZB tissue. In addition, the results of the yeast two-hybrid experiment showed that ZbAGL11 could interact with the ZbCYP450 and ZbCAD11 proteins.

Bailey Hortorium, Department of Plant Biology, 412 Mann Library Building, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, U.S.A. *Corresponding author; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT We report fossil wood specimens from two Miocene sites in Panama, Central America: Hodges Hill (Cucaracha Formation; Burdigalian, c.19 Ma) and Lago Alajuela (Alajuela Formation; Tortonian, c.10 Ma), where material is preserved as calcic and silicic permineralizations, respectively. The fossils show an unusual combination of features: diffuse porous vessel arrangement, simple perforation plates, alternate intervessel pitting, vessel–ray parenchyma pits either with much reduced borders or similar to the intervessel pits, abundant sclerotic tyloses, rays markedly heterocellular with long uniseriate tails, and rare to absent axial parenchyma. This combination of features allows assignment of the fossils to Malpighiales, and we note similarities with four predominantly tropical families: Salicaceae, Achariaceae, and especially, Phyllanthaceae, and Euphorbiaceae.

Several studies have reported a peculiar and infrequently formed multilayered structure of tension wood in four of the tropical genera. Tension wood is a tissue produced by trees to restore their vertical orientation and most studies have focused on trees developing tension wood by means of cellulose-rich, gelatinous fibres, as in Populus and Salix (Salicaceae s.s.). This study aims to determine if the multilayered structure of tension wood is an anatomical characteristic common in other Salicaceae and, if so, how its distribution correlates to phylogenetic relationships. Therefore, we studied the tension wood of 14 genera of Salicaceae and two genera of Achariaceae, one genus of Goupiaceae and one genus of Lacistemataceae, families closely related to Salicaceae or formerly placed in Flacourtiaceae.

  • Tree Gender & Sexual Reproduction Strategies
Tree Gender & Sexual Reproduction Strategies Dr. Kim D. Coder, Professor of Tree Biology & Health Care, Warnell School, UGA Your grandmother suggested sex would get you into trouble if you were not careful. For tree profes- sionals, not appreciating tree sexual expression can lead to unexpected tree growth performance, failed client expectations, and liability and maintenance problems. Tree sex expression is more complex than simply thinking of a “boy” or “girl” tree. This publication will cover primarily flowering trees or Angiosperms. Gymnosperms generate many seed holding organs (male and female cones in conifers), but few gender issues. The term “flower” defines an Angiosperm, and not a Gymnosperm, tree species. Not Animals For animals, gender is visible as sexual parts, secondary features, and behavior. Having bright feathers, unique coloration, manes of hair, and acting either male or female is a fact of life. Sexual identity is usually accepted as a function of physical features. For humans, maleness and femaleness are concentrated at polar ends of genetic programing and social life. Not so for trees. While human gender issues spawn jokes and angst, tree gender identification can cause great confusion. Preliminary tree gender identification is determined by types of flowers or cones generated. In Angiosperms, tree flowers can have male parts, female parts, both male and female parts, or none at all. Some of these parts are functional and some are not. You can not tell flower function (or gender) just by looking. Nebulous In flowering trees, tree gender can change from season to season over the life of a tree as the environ- ment changes, or tree gender can remain constant for life.

However, the presence of diseases in crops of blueberry, blackberry, strawberry, and raspberry in production areas of the country, has a negative impact in production yields. In this work, we presented a revision of all pathogens reported for these berries during the last 64 years in Mexico. Data on the different groups of pathogens including bacteria, stramenopila, and fungi, as well as location and references, are listed for the several types of berries produced. The pathogen species names were actualized according to the current taxonomic status following the specialized nomenclatural websites. Perspectives for future research are discussed. © 2021 Friends Science Publishers Keywords: Blackberry; Blueberry; Oomycota; Phytopathogenic bacteria; Raspberry; Strawberry Introduction reducing crop yields during pre- and postharvest.
