The plant lists were created for the first edition of the Manual in 1993 before information was available about invasive qualities of certain recommended plants contained in those lists (Norway Maple, Bradford Pear, etc.). Additionally, diseases and pests have made some other plants undesirable (Ash, Austrian Pine, etc.). The Howard County General Plan 2000 and subsequent environmental and community planning publications such as the Route 1 and Route 40 Manuals and the Green Neighborhood Design Guidelines have promoted the desirability of using native plants in landscape plantings. Therefore, this policy seeks to update the Recommended Plant Lists by identifying invasive plant species and disease or pest ridden plants for their removal and prohibition from further planting in Howard County and to add other available native plants which have desirable characteristics for street tree or general landscape use for inclusion on the Recommended Plant Lists. Please note that a comprehensive review of the street tree and landscape tree lists were conducted for the purpose of this update, however, only -

Betzen Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Patrick Tobin School of Environmental and Forest Sciences Bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum Pursh) is a prominent component of the urban and suburban landscape in Western Washington, which lies at the heart of the native range of A. macrophyllum. Acer macrophyllum performs many important ecological, economic, and cultural functions, and its decline in the region could have cascading impacts. In 2011, increases in A. macrophyllum mortality were documented throughout the distributional range of the species. Symptoms of this decline included a systemic loss of vigor, loss of transpiration, and a reduction in photosynthetic potential, but did not display any signs or symptoms indicative of a specific causative agent. No pathogenic microbes, insects, or other biotic agents were initially implicated in causing or predisposing A. macrophyllum to decline. In my thesis research, I quantified the spatial extent and severity of A. macrophyllum decline in the urban, suburban, and wildland forests of western Washington, identified potential abiotic and biotic disturbance agents that are contributing to the decline, and conducted a dendrochronological analysis to ascertain the timing of the decline. I surveyed 22 sites that were previously reported as containing declining A. macrophyllum, and sampled 156 individual A. -

European black alder is especially useful for wet sites and poor infertile sites as it has the ability to fix nitrogen in nodules on its root system. However, it is a non-native tree that has escaped cultivation and can now be found along rivers and other natural habitats in the Chicago area. Caudullo, D. de Rigo Acer platanoides L., commonly known as Norway maple, is a large tree that is widespread in central Europe and reaching eastwards the Ural Mountains. It is a fast-growing species, able to grow in a wide range of soils and habitat conditions. In natural stands it occurs in fresh and humid sites in temperate mixed forests, both with conifers and broadleaves. It is a secondary species, growing in small groups or individually. It has been planted intensively as an ornamental and shade tree, appreciated for its colourful foliage and large, spreading crown, in combination with its tolerance of urban conditions. Its wood is also valued for its attractive flaming figures and is used for music instruments, furniture, marquetry and turned objects. This maple is generally free of serious diseases, except in urban areas, where it is more vulnerable to pathogens. In North America it has been widely planted and is now naturalised, becoming an invasive species. The Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) is a large and tall- domed tree, sometimes very broad, growing to 25-30 m tall and Frequency 60-80 cm in diameter, although exceptionally over 150 cm. The valorisation of Reutealis trisperma seed for the production of non-edible oil and protein was investigated. Reutealis trisperma fruits contain approximately 60-61 wt%, d.b. mesocarp, 26-28 wt%, d.b. endosperm and 13 wt%, d.b. endocarp. The endosperm of ripe Reutealis trisperma fruit contains about 54-59 wt%, d.b. non-edible oil whereas the mesocarp contains only 3-9 wt%, d.b. oil. The cake obtained after the extraction of oil from the endosperm was mixed with the endocarp (20 wt% cake and 80 wt% endocarp) and used as feed (50 mg/larva/d) for the cultivation of Hermetia illucens larvae in a rearing container. The feed contains 39.2 wt%, d.b. hemicellulose, 10.9 wt%, d.b. cellulose and 29.9 wt%, d.b. lignin and 0.2 wt%, d.b. ash. The protein content of the feed was 19.1 wt%, d.b. A prepupal dry weight of approximately 50 3 mg/larvae was obtained after 12 d of treatment with an estimated productivity of 10.2 kgprepupae/m container.d. The estimated efficiency of black solider fly larvae in converting digested food was 21.6% with an assimilation efficiency of 27.7%. -

Watson2 INTRODUCTION ‘Red Sunset’ and ‘October Glory’ have proven to be the best cultivars of Red Maple for the south (Fig. 1). ‘Red Sunset’ has strong wood and is a vigorous, fast-grower, reaching a height of 50 feet with a spread of 25 to 35 feet. Trees are often seen shorter in the southern part of its range unless located on a wet site. This tree is preferred over Red Maple, Silver Maple or Boxelder when a fast-growing maple is needed, and will take on a pyramidal or oval silhouette. The newly emerging red flowers and fruits signal that spring has come. They appear in December and January in Florida, later in the northern part of its range. Leaves retain an attractive high gloss throughout the growing season. The seeds of ‘Red Sunset’ Red Maple are quite popular with squirrels and birds.
