Message from the Principal

It gives me immense pleasure to extend my warm welcome to all the students who aspire to be a part of academic fraternity at Govt. Degree College, Ganderbal. I feel Privileged and honoured to record that the institution is marching towards excellence in imparting quality education. The focus is to educate students in such a way so that they are able to get hold of better place in the competitive and cyber world with all their added responsibilities. I am proud to state that our institution has been designed as a “Model College” under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abiyan (RUSA) for which new administrative building. Library Block, seminar block are being constructed in the old campus. The objective is to facilitate intellectual stimulation to generate, maintain and disseminate knowledge. Besides, an effort is being made to inculcate moral values among the young generation. I am confident that you will be impressed by the Professionalism of our staff. The quality of student work and the atmosphere which helps in developing creative excellence. In a world that rewards perseverance, initiative, problem solving decision-making and cooperation, our students leave well-prepared for facing the challenges of the real life.in tune with the needs of the present day world, students are being offered every opportunity to build their skills and hence become productive individuals. In order to keep the students up to date, various seminars, conferences and workshops are being held on regular basis. Our institution offers all our students and exceptional learning environment with excess to wide ranging resource under pinned by excellent advice and guidance. I am sure and hopeful that your association with our institution would turn out to be productive, constructive and at the same time pleasing and enjoyable.

Editor’s Note I feel immense pleasure to welcome all of you with the 4th issue of our newsletter CHINAR which will provide information about important activities and significant events during the academic session 2016. the college is presently on the road to progress. the vastness of the college and the tremendous number of curricular and extracurricular activities made it difficult to accommodate each and everything. Burt i assure you that a sincere effort has been made to include all the relevant activities and events. At the end I extend my best wishes to all those who became the part of this endeavor. Hon’ble Commissioner Secretary Visits College

Hon'ble Commissioner for Higher Education Department Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon paid a visit to college on .The hon'ble commissioner was briefed by worthy principal Dr.Yasmeen Kawoos on the structure, operations and achievements of the college.Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon assured full support and cooperation to the worthy principal in all areas including the handover of Physical College and quick release of funds for completion of RUSA Works.

Debates/ Seminars

Regional Conference:A One Day Regional Conference was organised by Government Degree College Ganderbal on, “Global Challenges to Environment; Social, political and scientific Reforms” On 19th of March 2016. The Conference broadly focused on the present issues and challenges related to Global Environment and its Reforms.Prof Yasmin Kawoos the worthy principal of the college welcomed the guests and explained the purpose of the conference and shared the information on the present challenges to Environment and consequences thereof as felt across the world in the 21st century. On this occasion the District Development Commissioner Ganderbal Jenab Showkat Aijaz Mir was the Chief Guest and Prof. Dr. B.A. Ganie Director CORD University of Kashmir presented the keynote address.

A one Day Inter College Seerat Conference:

A one day Inter College Seerat Conference was organised by Government Degree College Ganderbal on 29-06-2016.The conference was attended by many students of different colleges and all the higher secondary of Ganderbal Town. Mr Junaid Ahmed Baba of B.A.1st year bagged the 1st position.

Seminar on BETI BACHAO BETI PADHAO

A Seminar on “BETI BACHAO BETI PADHO” was organized by Govt. Degree College Ganderbal on 03-09-2015 in which a good number of students participated. The District Development Commissioner Ganderbal Jenab Showkat Ajaz was the chief guest who stressed that highlighting themes like “BETI BACHAO BETI PADHO” is the need of the hour and a son and a daughter are just like two eyes of a man.

Awareness Cum Training Programme on VitiyaSakshatraAbhiyan (VISAKA):

Awareness-Cum-Training Programme on Vitiya Sakshatra Abiyan (VISAKA) was organized in our College on 29-12-2016 by NSS and AISHE Coordinators in collaboration with the technology wing of and Kashmir Bank. The NCC and NSS Volunteers from different College viz Degree College GDC Kangan, GDC Sumbal and GDC Bandipora Along with staff participated

College Sports Diary of the Year 2016:

Annual Road Race for Boys was organised by Government Degree College Ganderbal in May 2016 from Nishat to Daga Park on in which 90 students participated. Mohd Yaseen Bhat of B.A. 1st year bearing Roll No 884, Javed Maqbool Paray of B.A 3rd year and JavidAhamadWani of B.A 1st year got first ,second and third position respectively.

Annual Road race for Girls:

Annual Road Race for Girls organised by Government Degree College Ganderbal In May 2016 from Nishat to Daga Park on Foreshore Road in which 20 students participated. Shaheena Bilal of B.A 1st Year, Arifa Bilal of B.A.1stYear and BismaNazir of B.Sc. 1styear secured 1st, 2nd and third position respectively. Inter College Athletic Meet 2016-2017: The University of Kashmir organised an inter college Athletic Meet 2016-2017 from 2nd of June to 4th of June 2016. In this sports event the performance of our students was best and got 8 medals in different events. Sheeraza Hilal of B.A. 1styear got Gold medal in 100mtr. Sprints and Arifa Bilal, Fozia Majeed and Shaira of B.A. Ist semester got jointly Gold Medal in 400 mtr. Relay Race. Gousia of B.A Ist year got silver medal in 200mtr. Besides this our students got five Bronze Medals in 200 and 400 mtr Race in the event.

The NSS Units of this college adopted Government Middle School Kullan for financial and academic assistance.

World NO Tobacco Day

World NO Tobacco Day was celebrated on 31_May 2016 in the college to sensitise the students about the multiple adverse effect of consuming various forms of tobacco.

World Environment Day

World Environment Awareness Week was conducted from 5th of june to 11th of june 2016.The following activities were performed to raise awareness on Environmental pollution:

Faculty Achievements; Rukhsana Shawl Chief Librarian Government Degree College Ganderbal published a paper captioned “Divorce and Its Trans-Border Effects “in Indian Journal of Legal Philosophy,VOL 4,Issue (2), June 2016.She also gave a poster presentation in 3rd JK Women Science Congress organized by Govt. Women College for Nawakadal in collaboration with J&K State Science Technology and Innovation Council from November 17th to 19th, 2015. Dr.Muzamil Ahmad lecturer Dept. of psychology has supervised the dissertation titled “A COMPARATIVE STUDY TO ASSESS THE PSYCHOSOCIAL PROBLEMS AMONG ADOLESCENTS OF SELECTED RURAL AND URBAN SCHOOLS OF KASHMIR”, Submitted to the IGNOU for the partial fulfilment of the requirement of the award of the degree of MSc COUNSELLING & FAMILY THERAPY. Dr.Muzamil Ahmad, also supervised the following dissertations required for Submission to the IGNOU for the partial fulfilment of the requirement of the award of the degree of MASTER’S IN PSYCHOLOGY. A STUDY OF DEPRESSION AND RELIGIOSITY AMONG KASHMIRI YOUTH. TO ASSESS LEVEL OF DEPRESSION AMONG ORPHAN BOYS AND GIRLS OF KASHMIR PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING OF PEOPLE LIVING IN DISTRICT . EMOTIONAL COMPETENCE AMONG KASHMIRI YOUTH. TO STUDY AGGRESSION LEVEL AMONG EDUCATED UNEMPLOYED AND EMPLOYED YOUTH OF J&K. Mr. Sofi Mudasir Ahmad, Contractual Lecturer in Statistics published a paper entitled “Bayesian Estimation of length Biased Nakagami Distribution” in International Journal of Modern Mathematical Sciences. Vol. 14, No. 2 PP. 147- 159. Dr.Muzafar Ahmad Sheikh, Contractual Lecturer in Zoology published two research paper: In vitro antioxidant activity, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of “TaraxacumOfficinale Leaves”. IJIPSR/3 (6), 2015. Screening of ethanolic leaf extract of coleus amboinicus for its phytochemical composition antioxidant property, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents. IJIPSR/ (2) 2016. Student Achievements: Mr. Najam Us Saqib a student of B.A 3rd Year bagged 1st position in a debate organised by University of Kashmir on 22nd of August 2015.The topic for the debate was, “2014-Flood in the State of Jammu and Kashmir was a Man Made Catastrophe” Mr Ishfaq Ahmad Khanday student of B.A.3rd year of this college bagged 2nd position in an inter college Seerat Conference organised by Government Degree College Nawakadal on 12-05-2016. Job Oriented Courses/Skill Development Courses: Govt. Degree College Ganderbal organized three months Job Oriented Courses/Skill Development Courses in “Spoken ”, “Spoken Arabic” and two months course on “Skill Development in Information Technology” in the year 2015 December and January 2016 Spoken Hindi: 30 students successfully completed the courses and were awarded the certificates. Spoken Arabic: In this course 30 students successfully completed the courses and were awarded the certificates. Skill Development in Information Technology: Again in this course 30 students participated with zeal and were awarded certificates on the completion of the course.
