Introduction

Thank you for downloading my second end-of-season rating report. I have been running trirating.com for almost two years – which means that I have a large amount of data to analyze and a solid method of rating results. As last year, this report contains a detailed Rating Analysis of the TOP 10 athletes and major changes in the TOP 100. I’m also identifying the best performances in 2012 across the different courses, discuss the 2012 price money list and offer my first predictions for Kona 2013. The biggest addition to last year’s report is that I have broken the ratings down into individual ratings for each of the legs in a triathlon. This allows me to identify the best swimmers, bikers and runners in long distance . I’m also working on using the individual ratings to better predict how a race may unfold. The Kona Pro Ranking system as a way of qualifying for Kona continues to be an area of discussion among pro athletes. This year, I’m having a closer look at what is required to qualify and I’m discussing some qualifying strategies. Some valid strategies may not really be in the best interests of the sport, and I hope that WTC comes up with an updated version of the qualifying system that addresses the issues raised. My rating method has been pretty stable in the last year. I’ve tweaked a little bit in order to address some minor issues. For example, the adjustments and ratings I was getting for slow courses were not realistic, so I added some code to handle results that are a bit more extreme. That way, I was able to handle the crazy slow last edition of IM St. George, and the course ratings for slow courses such as Lanzarote have changed further away “from the middle”. That way, we now have a difference of almost thirty minutes between Lanzarote and Roth (instead of the twenty minutes as last year). The feedback I received indicates that these numbers are much more realistic. As not too many of the top athletes race on these slow courses, the influence of these changes in the ratings of the top athletes has been quite small. I’ve started to add more and more courses to my results database. This work is still ongoing, extracting the results from a PDF or website continues to be either difficult or frustratingly mind-numbing work. Race organizers such as WTC and Challenge should do a much better job, but it seems that once the race over, they don’t have too much interest in it. Another area that they should do a better job is with start lists. Even when they are posted a week or so before a race, they are usually hopelessly out of date. I’m sure that doing a better job here would make press releases or media inquiries much easier to handle. Even with all the work, I still enjoy working on the ratings and the regular posts before and after the race. I love getting feedback from readers and the ongoing discussion and encouragement by Bevan and John from IMTalk. I hope that I can continue and hopefully extend that value that trirating.com provides. An interesting collaboration has been with Brett from zentriathlon.com. This resulted in a guest post on his site on fast couples that I’ve included here in a slightly updated version. In order to lighten the mood a little bit, the report starts with a few Long Distance Trivia Questions – the answers are spread throughout the report. For those who want to get the answers right away, I’ve also included them at the end of the section on Money List. Enjoy this report and have a great 2013 triathlon season! Thorsten

Long Distance Trivia Questions Here are a few questions that are interesting to statistics nerds like me – I hope you like them, too! 1. Who had the second fastest Ironman-distance time of 2012? a. Men b. Women 2. Which races had such a small field so that not the whole price-money was given out? 3. and Britain seem to have a grip on the Kona titles. a. Who was the last non-Aussie to win the men's title? In which year? b. Who was the last non-Brit to win the women's title? In which year? 4. Who were the last US athletes to finish on the podium (1-3) in Kona? a. Men b. Women c. Bonus: Who were the last ones (men & women) before that? 5. Who posted the fastest marathon times in 2012? a. Men b. Women 6. It is very hard to peak multiple times in a year for a long-distance triathlon. Who were the last Kona champions to win another Ironman race in the same year? a. Men (name, year, race) b. Women (name, year, race) 7. There are some athletes that race very often in a long-distance race. Among the participants in Kona this year, who has the most finishes? a. Men (should be pretty easy) b. Women (trickier, as prolific racers Hillary Biscay and Belinda Granger didn't qualify) 8. This year, we saw two new world best bike times in a long distance triathlon by Andy Starykowicz in IM Florida (4:04:39) and Caroline Steffen in Melbourne (4:35:29). Who had the world best times before them? a. Men (name, time, race) b. Women (name, time, race) 9. Rating Analysis 2012 – Male Athletes TOP 10 Rank Name Nation Rating Last Race # Races 1 (1) Andreas Raelert GER 08:15:26 (+1:46) IM on 2012-10-13 10 2 (2) Craig Alexander AUS 08:16:48 (-1:13) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 9 3 (4) Marino Vanhoenacker BEL 08:17:06 (-2:22) IM on 2012-07-08 13 4 (5) ESP 08:20:19 (-2:40) IM Melbourne on 2012-03-24 17 5 (6) GER 08:20:53 (-2:09) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 5 6 (7) GER 08:21:20 (-2:16) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 17 7 (9) Faris Al-Sultan GER 08:24:12 (-3:10) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 15 8 (-) David Dellow AUS 08:25:32 (n/a) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 4 9 (14) Cameron Brown NZL 08:26:50 (-5:23) on 2012-07-08 19 10 (3) Chris McCormack AUS 08:27:19 (+8:20) IM Cairns on 2012-06-02 15

Compared to last year, Andreas Raelert held on to his first spot in the rankings, though his lead has gotten much smaller. He just delivers one strong season after another, but this year lacked a big highlight (in 2011 he set a new World Record time in Roth) – and I’m sure he will continue to search for ways to climb to the top spot in Kona. After his great performance in Melbourne Craig Alexander was in first place for most of the season, but after his sub-par Kona race, he fell back again to the #2 spot. Marino Vanhoenacker and Eneko Llanos probably have mixed feelings about their season. They’ve both had good results (Marino winning in , Eneko having a good result in Melbourne and in his hometown of Vitoria in the ITU long distance), but as in 2011 both had disappointing DNFs in Kona. Sebastian Kienle and David Dellow are clearly athletes on the rise that had a great 2012 season. Sebastian had an impressive autumn (winning the 70.3 championships and putting his stamp on Kona), David raced strong in Melbourne, won Cairns and had a TOP10 result in Kona. Timo Bracht and Faris Al-Sultan are two very solid German racers. They continue to win races (Timo in Western Australia, Faris in ) and place well in Kona – but are they ever going to contend again for a Kona win? Cameron Brown is another “older” athlete – he’s had a frustrating DNS in Kona, but overall had a good 2012 season with fast times in Melbourne and Roth. Chris McCormack is back to IM racing after trying to qualify for the Olympics. He just “ticked the box” in finishing Cairns, then wasn’t on form in Kona (seems that his altitude prep didn’t go as planned) – but he’ll be back for 2013 and I’m sure he wants to say goodbye to Kona with a good result. Last year we also had Dirk Bockel and in the TOP10. Dirk had a not-so-good end to the year: His injury-hampered Kona had him finish in a solid 10th place, but trying to score some points in Cozumel ended in a 4:30 run and a steep increase in his rating. He’ll be back for more in 2013 – in contrast to Rasmus who ended his career. He’s had races in Texas and Kona not quite going to plan (each with 3:1x marathons), then said an emotional goodbye in Kona.

Most Improved Here are some of the athletes that improved their ratings and their rank during 2012:  #13 (BEL, 8:28:32), up from #28 (8:39:04)  #16 Clemente Alonso-McKernan (ESP, 30:39), up from #33 (8:41:08)  #28 James Cunnama (ZAF, 8:38:14), up from #45 (8:44:42)  #29 Ben Hoffman (USA, 8:38:50), up from #49 (8:45:43)  #30 Tim O’Donnell (USA, 8:39:27), up from #59 (8:47:57)  #31 TJ Tollakson (USA, 8:40:09), up from #51 (8:45:46)  #41 Konstantin Bachor (GER, 8:42:33), up from #81 (8:54:37)  #49 Georg Potrebitsch (GER, 8:45:03), up from #74 (8:52:48) Frederick Van Lierde has had a break-through Ironman season. He had a good 3rd place in Melbourne, then won in and placed in the TOP10 in Kona. Clemente Alonso-McKernan is not exactly a household name, but he won IM and placed 3rd in Germany. He’s steadily improving his rating, and it’ll be interesting to see how his career is going to continue. James Cunnama came back from a long injury break with a fast time in Roth, then struggled a bit in Cozumel. We also have strong groups of US athletes that continue to improve. Together with Jordan Rapp (slowly but steadily climbing the ratings and now knocking on the TOP10) there are finally some strong US athletes that may play a role at the pointy end in Kona. (The last podium finishes by US athletes were Chris Lieto in 2009 and Tim DeBoom in 2002.) Germany is another nation that continues to bring up new names. New Athletes in the TOP 100 Here are some athletes that broke into the TOP 100:  #17 Ty Butterfield (BMU, 8:32:05)  #35 Dorian Wagner (GER, 8:41:04)  #52 Jarmo Hast (FIN, 8:45:54)  #78 Brandon Marsh (USA, 8:54:39) Ty Butterfield’s 4th place in Arizona showed his potential, after New Zealand 2009 and Kona 2010 it was his 3rd Ironman – not sure if he’s going to focus on long distance racing. Similarly, Jarmo Hast finished 5th in Arizona after 2009 races in the UK and Kona. Dorian Wagner had a great 8:08:46 in , which was in line with his previous results in Roth and Austria – all on fast courses. I’m looking forward to see him racing in a strong field on a harder course. I’ve included Brandon Marsh as an example of an athlete who is not winning races at this point, but his results show a steady improvement (e.g. his first sub-3 marathon in Cozumel), and very soon he’ll be in contention in races with a smaller, not so strong field.

2012 Rating Report Thorsten’s Triathlon Rating Page 6

Upcoming Athletes Here are some athletes that had one or two great results, but in order for a valid rating, three results are required. With less than three results, the ratings do not mean a lot and may change quite a lot after their next race – but if their next races were on a similar level, they’d be in the TOP 20. Instead of their rating, I just give the results they have posted:  Nils Frommhold (GER, winner of IM Arizona in 8:03:13)  Paul Matthews (AUS, 8:05:58 in Melbourne and 8:04:58 in Arizona)  Ivan Rana (ESP, winner of IM Cozumel in 8:15:07)  Bas Diederen (NDL, runner-up in Cozumel in 8:22:55)  Andrew Starykowicz (USA, winner in 8:06:17 in Florida, 8:20:36 in Arizona)  Bart Aernouts (BEL, 8:18:17 in Melbourne and 8:37:31 in Hawaii)  Victor Del Corral (ESP, winner of IM Lanzarote in 8:44:39) Notable Athletes dropping out of TOP 100 Some athletes were well placed in 2011 but dropped out of the TOP 100 in 2012:  #13 Michael Weiss (AUT)  #20 Patrick Vernay (NCL)  #24 Terenzo Bozzone (NZL)  #38 Marcel Zamora (ESP)  #39 Tom Evans (CAN)  #62 Chris Lieto (USA) Most of these athletes didn’t post any results in 2012. Michael Weiss is serving a two-year doping ban, and some athletes probably ended their PRO careers (Vernay, Evans). With Terenzo and Chris we have two athletes that were injured in 2012. Terenzo hasn’t finished an Ironman since New Zealand 2011, but he’s already back to racing half-Ironman. Chris tried to qualify for Kona, but had to drop out of Coeur d’Alene with a run injury. I’m not sure what his plans are for the 2013 season. I don’t have any details about Marcel Zamora, but he also struggled in 2012 but is still racing.

Rating Analysis 2012 - Female Athletes TOP 10 Rank Name Nation Rating Last Race 1 (2) Mirinda Carfrae AUS 09:12:34 (+1:48) IM Florida on 2012-11-03 2 (6) USA 09:15:32 (-6:05) IM Cozumel on 2012-11-25 3 (14) Caroline Steffen SUI 09:16:43 (-12:43) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 4 (5) AUT 09:17:11 (-3:53) IM Florida on 2012-11-03 5 (10) Rachel Joyce GBR 09:19:30 (-10:31) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 6 (9) Sonja Tajsich GER 09:22:42 (-6:56) IM Cozumel on 2012-11-25 7 (12) Linsey Corbin USA 09:23:56 (-6:18) IM Arizona on 2012-11-18 8 (15) Amy Marsh USA 09:25:49 (-4:41) IM Hawaii on 2012-10-13 9 (8) Rebekah Keat AUS 09:26:14 (-2:26) IM W.Australia on 2012-12-09 10 (13) Leanda Cave GBR 09:26:26 (-3:51) IM Arizona on 2012-11-18

In the women’s ranking, we see a bit more change than on the men’s side. This is due to athletes ending their racing careers (, Karin Thürig) or being injured (, Catriona Morrison). Mirinda Carfrae “inherited” the #1 spot from Chrissie. She struggled a bit during this year and while placing 3rd did not have the Kona she wanted. She’s also the only athlete in the TOP 10 who did not improve her rating this year. I hope she’s coming back strong for 2013, as her fantastic run makes her races very interesting to follow. Mary Beth Ellis is still unbeaten in an Ironman outside of Kona. She was not as over-raced as last year, but came up just short in Kona. The same can be said for Caroline Steffen. She had a great 2012 season and improved her rating by leaps and bounds, but will not be satisfied with her 2nd place in Kona. Yvonne Van Vlerken (now racing for Austria and training in ’s group) had a string of DNFs, but then managed to win IM Florida in November (only to follow up with another DNF in Cozumel). When she’s on form she can beat anyone, but her results are not steady enough. Rachel Joyce also had a 2012 great season, but was sick again in Kona – barely recovering to finish 11th and already in a good position to qualify. I’m looking forward to when she races healthy in Kona! I always feel that Sonja Tajsich is a bit under the radar. Her swim is really bad for a PRO (1:10 in Kona, 1:13 in Cozumel), so she isn’t near the front until the end of the run – but she usually has the fastest run split. Linsey Corbin continues to move up the ranking. With two wins this year (Austria and Arizona) and a solid 8th in Hawaii she is well positioned for big things in 2013. Amy Marsh was not able to win another Ironman this year, but has posted three solid results this year and with a 10th place in Kona shouldn’t have a problem to qualify. Hopefully she can use the time to improve her run! I’m not really sure how to sum up Rebekah Keat’s season. She has had some good results (2nd places in New York and Western Australia) so you can’t call it a disappointment. However, for an athlete that has posted a world-class sub-8:40 time, you have to think that she has a bigger potential that what she has shown this year. Leanda Cave had the perfect Kona race, coming from behind to win it on the run. As last year, she doubled up in Arizona and has secured her Kona slot, so she is free to plan her season as she likes. She’s had some slower results in the past so she is not placed as high as her current capabilities indicate. 2012 Rating Report Thorsten’s Triathlon Rating Page 8

Most Improved In addition to Caroline and Amy (who were already discussed in the TOP 10), a few other athletes have moved up in the rankings:  #13 Meredith Kessler (USA, 9:30:07), up from #21 (9.35:28)  #21 Caitlin Snow (USA, 9:34:16), up from #30 (9:40:19)  #23 Carrie Lester (AUS, 9:36:01), up from #31 (9:40:41)  #26 Britta Martin (NZL, 9:38:59), up from #48 (9:54:51)  #30 Mirjam Weerd (NLD, 9:41:29), up from #49 (9:55:00)  #53 Charisa Wernick (USA, 9:55:34), up from #74 (10:11:44) Similar to the men’s side, there is a strong contingent of US athletes – one of them should be able to crack the TOP 3 in Kona soon. The last podium finishes by US girls were Desiree Ficker in 2006 and in 1999. New Athletes in the TOP 100 We’ve also had some “new” athletes enter the TOP 100 – either athletes that didn’t have enough results for a valid rating, or athletes who didn’t post a result in 2011:  #12 Gina Crawford (NZL, 9:29:40)  #15 Michelle Vesterby (DEN, 9:31:18)  #18 Corinne Abraham (GBR, 9:32:53)  #20 Cathleen Calkins (USA, 9:33:47)  #28 Bella Bayliss (GBR, 9:40:17)  #31 Michelle Bremer (NZL, 9:42:28)  #32 Candice Harmond (NZL, 9:43:09)  #37 Jessie Donovan (USA, 9:44:03) Upcoming Athletes Here are some female athletes who posted great results but don’t have enough races for a full rating yet:  Sophie de Groote (BEL, 9:26:07 in Cozumel 2011, 9:15:45 in Cozumel 2012)  Ashley Clifford (USA, 3rd in Florida in 9:07:34)  Anja Beranek (GER, two 2nd places in 2011 in 10:15:59, and Germany 2012 in 9:05:41) Notable Athletes dropping out of TOP 100 In addition to the four athletes who dropped out of the TOP 10 (Chrissie, Julie Dibens, Karin Thürig and Cat Morrison) there are a few more well known athletes who didn’t post a result in 2012:  #17 (NZL)  #22 Nina Kraft (GER)

Best Swimmers, Bikers and Runners As described in the introduction, I’ve extended my analysis to come up with ratings for each of the legs in a triathlon. As with the „total“ rating, the individual ratings account for conditions and a slow or fast course in order to compare results from different races. As the data for each of the legs is not always available, I’ve relaxed the requirements for a valid rating a bit: Only two results are necessary for a rating in one of the disciplines. Still, one result in the last twelve months is required. TOP 10 Swim-Rated Athletes A lot of the names in the swim-ratings are not that well known: There are swim-specialists that do not play a major role for the rest of the race. But these athletes have a great potential: For example, Andy Potts has shown that a great swimmer can develop into a great Ironman athlete capable of winning races.

TOP 10 Bike-Rated Athletes

TOP 10 Bike-Rated Male Athletes The names in the TOP 10 bike-ratings are much better known than the swimmers. After his fantastic races in Florida (posting a new world record for the bike leg) and Arizona Andy Starykowicz leads the ranking followed by Sebastian Kienle and Konstantin Bachor (who both posted really fast bike times in Roth). Jordan Rapp and Ben Hoffmann prove that the US has some pretty good bike riders, too. But all in all, the Europeans dominate this ranking. TOP 10 Run-Rated Athletes The run is where races are decided, so it is not surprising to see that IM winners dominate this ranking.

TOP 10 Run-Rated Male Athletes Bart Aernouts from is the surprise leader in the men’s run rating. He has posted a 2:42 in Melbourne and a 2:47 in Kona – if his swim and bike improve a bit further, he can certainly win a smaller IM race. If it weren’t for his 3h-run in Kona, Crowie would have lead this ranking. He also posted the fastest run-split of 2012 with a 2:38:46 in Melbourne. TOP 10 Run-Rated Female Athletes On the women’s side, Rinnie still has the best run in the scene – and by quite a large margin. Cait Snow is another great runner – she’s had the fastest 2012 run with a 2:51:46 in Texas. Similar to Sonja Tajsich, she is usually too far back after the bike to win big races. There are a lot of younger athletes that are still improving, so I expect to see a lot of change in the next years in this ranking. TOP 10 Performances 2012 By adjusting for a fast or slow course and conditions on race day, I’m able to compare finishing times from different courses. Therefore, my list of the top performances of the year is a bit more indicative of how good the performance really was (and not on how fast a course the race was occurring). Here are a few notable points:  Caroline Steffen had three of the 10 fastest results, but came up just short in Kona. Rachel Joyce had the 2nd and 3rd results, but got sick just before Kona. Similarly, Crowie had the best male performance in Melbourne, and also wasn’t on form in Kona.  Last year, Kona results were dominating the best results – 8 of the best 20 results were from Kona. This year the Kona winners are only 3rd and 7th, and only one other Kona result makes the Top 10. The penalties for the top women were probably a factor, but what happened on the men’s side?  Instead of Kona, this year’s overall results are dominated by Melbourne, which managed to assemble a great field for their premiere race. I’m looking forward to the second edition! TOP 10 Male Results of 2012

Fastest 2012 Results While I think that the adjusted results are much more meaningful, there is still some value in having a look at the fastest “clock” times for 2012. It was a slower year than 2011 – 2 vs. 6 sub-8 results for the men and 8 vs. 15 sub-9 for the women. I’m not sure why this was the case – maybe some race conditions were not so good (for example, Austria was very hot and Roth had some rain). Fastest Male Results

2012 Money List In other sports – such as golf – the main way of ranking athletes is by the amount of prize money they make. With all the data from the qualifying races, I’ve built one for Ironman Triathlons. It is also a convenient way of putting men and women in the same list. Overall Money List Here are the 20 athletes – both from the men and women – that have earned the most prize money in “official”, full-distance Ironman races in the Kona 2012 qualifying cycle: Rank Name Total Prize Money 1 Caroline Steffen 30.000 2 Mary Beth Ellis 27.000 Jordan Rapp 27.000 4 Simone Braendli 25.500 5 Meredith Kessler 25.000 6 Frederik Van Lierde 20.000 Clemente Alonso-McKernan 20.000 Erika Csomor 20.000 Linsey Corbin 20.000 10 Cameron Brown 19.000 11 Matthew Russell 17.500 Sofie Goos 17.500 13 Jessie Donavan 17.000 Eneko Llanos 17.000 15 Ezequiel Morales 16.500 Ronnie Schildknecht 16.500 17 Paul Amey 16.000 Gillian Clayton 16.000 19 Carrie Lester 15.500 David Dellow 15.500

As last year, this does not include money from IM Hawaii, as this would seriously skew the data. Also, IM 70.3 races are not included. Analysis Here are some observations:  Caroline takes the first place (winning the regional championships in Melbourne and Frankfurt) in front of Mary Beth Ellis and Jordan Rapp (also winning two races, but Texas and New York having a smaller prize purse).  A bit of a surprise may be Simone Braendli, but she had three top 3 results (winning Cozumel, 2nd in South Africa and 3rd in Switzerland).  The numbers are only slightly higher than last year. Outside of a good Kona payday, it is next to impossible to make a living on Ironman price money.

Kona Pro Ranking Now that we have two seasons of the KPR qualifying system for PROs, we can have a closer look at the implications for athletes. Comparing KPR 2011 and 2012 In order to qualify, there are two dates, end of July and end of August. Here are the points you needed in 2011 and 2012: 2011 2012 Male Female Male Female July 2.800 4.870 3.830 4.400 August 3.080 4.640 4.210 5.040

WTC have not changed the base system (point scheme, same number of qualifying spots), they have added some extra races in 2012 (Melbourne, Cairns, New York, Mont Tremblant, Sweden), so even with Korea no longer a qualifying race and some races getting less points, there were an extra 3.000 points available for July, and another extra 5.000 points in August (a total of 8.000 points in the 2012 qualifying season). This explains some of the extra points needed for the male PROs to qualify, but to me it also looks that people were racing with some more focus on qualifying for Kona. On the female side, the impact of the extra points were not as pronounced, I think the differences mainly come from a few athletes (for example Caroline Steffen) snatching up a lot of the big points. Looking forward to 2013 For 2013, there are a few changes in the KPR:  Some races have been cancelled (New York, Regensburg, St. George), some have been added (Los Cabos, Lake Tahoe).  There were some minor changes in the points for a few races. The total sum of available points hasn’t changed a lot (57.000 instead of 56.000). As the number of slots for the men hasn’t changed, I don’t expect major changes in the points required to qualify, so adding a little buffer gives a number of points to shoot for in order to qualify. The number for the woman is trickier: WTC has increased the number of slots from 25+5 to 27+8. This would have pushed the August qualifying threshold down to 4.000 (for 2011) and 4.298 (for 2012). The extra two slots probably don’t have much of an influence on the July threshold. This leads to the following values that I would consider “safe” thresholds for Kona qualifying: 2013 Male Female July 4.000 4.750 August 4.400 4.500 Qualifying Strategies Here are some strategies in order to qualify as a Pro for Kona: 1. Kona & Validate (for recent winners and TOP10 finishers) The last 5 years winners just have to validate their slot by doing one Ironman outside of Kona. This allowed Mirinda Carfrae and Leanda Cave to continue their season after Kona and secure their slots by finishing Florida or Arizona. As Kona gives a lot of points, placing well in Kona and another Ironman is usually enough to 2012 Rating Report Thorsten’s Triathlon Rating Page 21

qualify as well. 10th place in Kona gives 2.500 points, so placing 3rd in a 1000-points race (780 points) and a few more points from 70.3s should be sufficient to get enough points. (I think that Dirk Bockel tried this strategy with his 10th in Kona and racing the 2000-points race in Cozumel.) 2. Big Point Races Even if there are no Kona points to help you get over the threshold, a good result in a big point race gives you enough points. A TOP 5 in the regional championships gives you at least 2.400 points. Combine that with some more races, and you should have enough points – but you may have to race another Ironman to get some more decent points. This worked well for Caroline Steffen (getting big points in Melbourne and Frankfurt) or Marino Vanhoenacker (Frankfurt). 3. Start Early, Race Often Instead of focusing on the big points, you can try to race as often as possible and try to start a large collection from different races. WTC limits this strategy so you can only collect points from up to 5 races. This means that you’d have to collect an average of 800 points (for the men) and about 900 points for the women. I’ll have a closer look at which races one should pick in the next section, but it seems obvious to me that you should use the races late in the year for a good start into the qualifying season: A lot of them offer 2.000 points, and the quality of the field wasn’t too consistent in the past. (This may change; in 2012 these races had good, strong fields). This strategy was used by Andy Potts (3.840 points from 5 results, but best result was 1.000 points for winning Lake Placid) and Pete Vabrousek (5.260 points from 5 results ranging from 1.200 to 700). Belinda Granger seems to have tried using this strategy (4.370 points from 5 results ranging 1.600 to 390), but failed to qualify – the smaller number of available spots and the resulting requirement for more points makes successfully using this strategy for women a lot harder. 4. Use August Points Strategically At the start of the year, it is almost impossible to evaluate all the different strategies and racing possibilities of all the different athletes. By August, things are still complicated, but it is much easier to figure out how many points are needed to snatch one of the remaining August slots. By building enough points to be in contention and strategically picking an August race (based on required and available points and the strength of the field), you can make adjustments to maximize the chances of qualifying. This appears to have been the strategy of Jordan Rapp who used the big August points from New York in order to qualify. However, after managing to qualify in August, it is very hard to race well in Kona – the chance for “an explosion” and a resulting DNF is pretty high. So you should then try to race conservatively in Kona, get as many points as possible and use this as a basis to qualify earlier in the year. Let’s see how Jordan is going to structure his schedule this year … Best Races for KPR Points As noted above, when racing an Ironman as a PRO and want to qualify for Kona, you should be realistically able to get 800 points (for men) and 900 points (for women). Based on the points for each race, here is the place you have to finish: Points Place Points Place Points 6000 17 800 16 900 4000 15 800 14 960 2000 10 800 8 960 1000 2 880 1 1000

The tables in the following sections show the times (both the actual finishing time and the course- neutral adjusted time) required to score at least 800 points in the men’s field or at least 900 points in the womens’ race.

2012 Rating Report Thorsten’s Triathlon Rating Page 22

Here are some observations from these tables:  Because you have to place 1st or 2nd in order to get at least 800 points in a 1.000-points race, it is very hard to finish high enough. It is also quite risky to rely on 1.000-point races, as just one or two great athletes or athletes having a great day can ruin your chances of getting enough points.  Because of the strength of the field, it is hard to place well enough in Kona – but this is probably offset by the very large upside: If you have a great day and manage to finish a bit higher up, you can earn a lot more points.  The best race to get points seems to be Frankfurt: The field is not deep enough to make reaching the threshold impossible, but also has a pretty large upside when racing well.  Other than that, some of the “smaller” 2.000-point races seem to be good for qualifying.  Some outliers (St. George, Sweden for the women) show that strategically picking a race for points (or having a bit of luck when deciding on a schedule) can be useful.

Looking forward to Kona 2013 – First predictions After Kona 2012 and the first qualifiers for the 2013 season, speculation about the chances for Kona 2013 is starting. Will Crowie and Macca be back for another good result? Will Andreas Raelert be finally able to win Kona? What about the women’s side after Chrissie retired from Ironman racing? Here are the winning odds based on previous results. Male Race Participants • Craig Alexander: 25% (3-1) • Pete Jacobs: 22% (4-1) • Marino Vanhoenacker: 16% (5-1) • Chris McCormack: 11% (8-1) • Andreas Raelert: 7% (13-1) • James Cunnama: 5% (18-1)

Even after his sub-standard race in Kona 2012, Crowie is still the favorite for 2013, closely followed by Pete Jacobs who just knows how to focus on Kona. Marino still has decent statistical chances – as long as he manages to finish. A new entry is James Cunnama who is trying again to qualify for Kona. Female Race Participants • Mirinda Carfrae: 24% (3-1) • Caroline Steffen: 22% (3-1) • Leanda Cave: 21% (4-1) • Rachel Joyce: 11% (8-1) • Mary Beth Ellis: 7% (13-1)

On the women’s side, there are three athletes that have almost the same winning chances: Rinnie, Caroline and defending champion Leanda. After having to fight an infection in Kona, Rachel Joyce’s chance will be determined by her racing healthy. Mary Beth Ellis is still looking for her best build-up to Kona – she is still unbeaten outside of Kona, so obviously she has a lot of potential.

Some values are not very reliable (for example, New York and Sweden had just one race), but overall they are quite stable. They still fluctuate year by year in a corridor of roughly 5 minutes with smaller influences such as weather, smaller course changes, or road conditions. (Compared to last year, I’ve made some changes that give the “slow” courses a slower, more realistic rating.) The values are quite evenly spread along a continuum, but a few courses stick out:  Slow courses < -5 minutes St.George, Wales, Lanzarote, Wisconsin, Hawaii  Fast courses > 15 minutes Austria, Brasil, Florida, Roth, Sweden

2012 Rating Report Thorsten’s Triathlon Rating Page 26

I’ve also included ratings for the individual disciplines. (Based on the methodology, the sum of the legs doesn’t always give the overall rating. I’m going to have a closer look and may update accordingly.) In the table I’ve highlighted the fastest (bold) and slowest (bold and italics) ratings in each discipline. Here is a short discussion:  Kona has the slowest swim (-4:55) – probably because of the ocean swim and how crowded it is. It is followed by South Africa (another ocean swim) and Coeur d'Alene (held in a very cold mountain lake).  Fast swims are in New York (Hudson current), Wales and UK (no idea why these would be fast – other than being short)  The slowest bike legs are in St. George, Wales and Lanzarote. All have a lot of hills and probably some wind as well.  Sweden had the fastest bike leg (again, I’m suspecting a short course), followed by Texas and Florida (two relatively flat courses).  Wales, UK and Mont Tremblant showed low run times.  Slow run courses are New York, Hawaii and Louisville – all had hot conditions that probably caused some problems.  Even though Roth is a very fast course, none of its legs is pretty fast on its own. But consistent good courses (canal swim with easy navigation, rolling bike course made for fast times, crushed gravel run course easy on the legs) lead to a very fast course.

Having fun with the Ratings: Fast Couples Note: This article originally appeared in October as a guest post on ZenTriathlon, the blog of Coach Brett who’s also the creator of the popular “Zen and the Art of Triathlon” podcast. Other than correcting some factual errors, I have not made any changes or updates. Some people say that training for a triathlon - especially a long distance triathlon - can lead to breakups. One of my friends used to say that if you have a girlfriend, you're not training enough. But if both people are into it, the situation is different: There are some well-known couples in Pro Triathlon that are both really good athletes. Some of the great early triathletes were athlete couples: and Julie Moss or and . A bit later we had and Lori Boden - they both won IM Australia 1999 and IM Canada 2000, and they went 1/2 in Kona 2000.

Part 1: Kona 2012 In Kona 2012, there were three couples in the Pro field: Total Time Total Rank Name Finish Rank Caroline Steffen 09:16:58 2 17:52:00 11 David Dellow 08:35:02 9 Mirinda Carfrae 09:21:41 3 17:55:09 11 Timothy O’Donnell 08:33:28 8 Heather Wurtele 09:44:04 14 19:29:11 52 Trevor Wurtele 09:45:07 38 (Actually, the three are in different states of their relationship: David and Caroline are just partners, TO and Rinnie are engaged, and the Wurteles are married. There is another pair that shares the last name, but to my knowledge Pete Jacobs and Jessica Jacobs are not related.)

Looking at these numbers, the race for the fastest couple was pretty close: David and Caroline edged out Tim and Rinnie by just about three minutes - with all of them placing in the Top 10. Trevor and Heather were a bit behind - but Trevor qualifying for Kona was a bonus, and Heather didn't quite have the day she was hoping for.

Part 2: But wait, there are more! If you've been following triathlon for a while, you'll know there are a lot more Pro couples than just these three. However, as not all of them are racing in Kona, it is tricky to build a ranking for all "long distance couples".

For example, you have Tom Lowe and Chrissie Wellington. Chrissie hasn't raced in Kona 2012, but she finished Kona 2011 in 8:55 - what time would be the equivalent in 2012? This is one of the goals of my website "Thorsten's Triathlon Rating" at trirating.com - to make results from different years comparable. (Based on my analysis, Kona 2012 was about 10 minutes slower than 2011.)

If you take Tom, he raced Kona 2011 in 8:29 and Kona 2012 in 8:53. He also raced a couple of other races (Arizona 2010 and Austria 2011 and 2012). I'm pulling all of these results together into an athlete's rating (which is a weighted average of finishing times adjusted for course and race conditions, favoring the more recent results.) For Tom, I get a rating of 8:34, which is the expected finishing time on an "average" course with average race conditions.

I can also average the adjustments for a course from the different years, thus allowing a comparison between different courses. For example, Kona has a course rating of -4:37, Arizona is an 8:10 course. So based on my data and analysis, Arizona is nearly 13 minutes quicker than Kona. But as she and Tom are so far ahead of David and Caroline, I'm pretty sure that they would still be ahead even if Chrissie's comeback race turns out not so well. After that, the close fight between David/Caroline and Tim/Rinnie continues, although the difference is a bit larger when looking at the ratings instead of the Kona results.

Part 4: Whom did we miss, who's coming up? I've probably missed a few Pro couples, if so, please let me know by sending me an email to [email protected]. As I'm based in Germany and spend my time working out and analyzing results, I may have missed some social media discussions.

We may also see some additions to the table in the future. James Cunnama's partner is getting in shape for an Ironman, with James's rating of 08:38:32 they have a good shot at the Top 5. Another addition may be Brett's friends John Hirsch and Christine Lynch – John already has a rating of 09:43:32, and if Christine turns Pro next season...
