HOTCHKISS. 33° HON. COPYRIGHT APPLIED FOR JUNE 1. 1916 PD Books PD Commons PD Books PD Commons 7^^^: ^ ^^^:Ay<^.\y3 */i^W- preface In the preparation of this book, the author has sought solely to present an accurate and connected history of the rise and extension of Scottish Rite Masonry in Texas. The information which it contains has been compiled chiefly from the Masonic records in the archives of Philip C. Tucker, for free and frequent access to which the author is indebted to the widow and family of the late Grand Cornpiander. The only virtue that is claimed for this work is its cor- rect portrayal of the life of the Rite in Texas. The author, himself, at the time of writing, the oldest thirty-third de- gree Honorary Scottish Rite Mason in Texas, has drawn readily upon his more or less extensive fund of informa- tion concerning the Rite in this State, not for the purpose of writing down his recollections or beliefs concerning its establishment and progress, but merely for the sugges- tion of lines of investigation that carefully and definitely pursued might lead to the acquisition of data about the authenticity of which there could be no shadow of doubt. More than twelve months were spent in this undertak- ing. The author visited frequently the several Consis- tories of Texas and going once to Washington to examine the records of the Supreme Council for information un- obtainable here.

  • 2011 Commission Report
2011 Commission Report BAJA CALIFORNIA The two groups representing the Grand Lodge of Baja California have now worked out an agreement that has unified them again into one regular Grand Lodge. The leaders of the two groups have signed the agreement, and have assured it will be ratified by both groups. The Grand Lodge of Baja California has now satisfied the standards for recognition. BULGARIA There continues to be no progress in the unification of Freemasonry in Bulgaria. Since they have previously been determined to meet the standards for recognition, there is no interest on the part of the United Grand Lodge of Bulgaria in entering discussions with the Grand Lodge AF&AM of Bulgaria, either for unification or for establishing a treaty to share the jurisdiction. Both of these Grand Lodges appear to practice regular Masonry, and both were of the same origin until they split in 2001. This Commission has urged the two Grand Lodges to resolve their differences for the past seven years to no avail; therefore this issue will not be addressed again until the brethren in Bulgaria reach some type of agreement. CYPRUS The United Grand Lodge of England and the Grand Lodge of Cyprus have reached an accord whereby they will both share the jurisdiction of Cyprus, and have established fraternal relations among themselves. The Grand Lodge of Cyprus therefore now meets all the standards for recognition. CZECH REPUBLIC The Grand Lodge of the Czech Republic informed us that an irregular body calling itself the Czech National Grand Lodge was recently created by a group of dissident members who defected and formed this new organization.

  • Episode 20 Prince Hall
Prince Hall , The history Prince Hall, our founder, was one of our great Americans, a worthy Grand Master associated with our first Grand Lodge and its expansion. His name is carried by our masonic organizations in the United States, and by thousands of freemasons who regard themselves as descendants from the Grand Lodge of England, from which he received his authority more than two centuries ago. We in America celebrated in 1976 the two hundredth anniversary of our Declaration of Independence. This is also the two hundred and first (201st) anniversary of the founding of Prince Hall Masonry. It is a monument to Prince Hall’s life, career and leadership. It was a significant event in Freemasonry on March 6, 1775, when Prince Hall and fourteen other men were initiated into Freemasonry through Warrant No. 459, which is still in our possession. John Batt, who was of the 38th Foot Regiment of the British Army, having enlisted in 1759 and learning of the American cause, re-enlisted in its army. The enlistees were Prince Hall, Cyrus Johnston, Bueston Slinger, Prince Rees, John Canton, Peter Freeman, Benjamin Tiler, Duff Ruform, Thomas Santerson, Prince Rayden, Cato Speain, Boston Smith, Peter Best, Forten Horward, and Richard Titley. The writer has this record. A permit was issued for these freemasons to meet as African Lodge No. 1, and they became the first Black freemasons in the United States. Prince Hall enlisted and served as a soldier in the 2nd and 6th Regiments of Massachusetts. In this connection, George W. Williams, historian, wrote in 1884, "that he saw hard service we know by the record of the two regiments he served in, always distinguished for steadiness and valor.

FURTHER LIGHT Hale, brothers of the Rule and Line, who work by Truth and Honor's laws; Still striving toward the Light divine, the dayspring of our righteous cause. The cause our ancient seers upbore, in lonely lands through darkest night; Still keeping in their mystic Lore, the prophecy of "Further Light." And further light spread Truth and Love, 'till now the world begins to know The Fatherhood of God, above, the Brotherhood of Man, below. And we, who caught their thought in part — how oft we met, in former time To search for truths their "Royal Art," had woven in the "work" sublime. And oft within the dimmest lore, of ancient writ, we sought and found Some Jewel from their secret store — concealed of old in Holy ground; Concealed for those who sought aright, as that Foundation Stone of yore, "First seen in Heaven" by Holy Light, then centre of the Master's floor. And oft we met in concourse glad, and hail our chosen rulers all. And oft with spirits O how sad, to hear for some the funeral pall, And oft must be, 'till all go, and none shall know that we were here, For what is lost on earth below, is treasured in that higher sphere.

  • 2010 Commission Report
2010 Commission Report BAJA CALIFORNIA The two groups representing the Grand Lodge of Baja California agreed at the meeting of the Commission last year to sit down with the assistance of selected mediators and work for a resolution of their differences. This was accomplished and M :.W :. Franco Magdaleno Soto representing one faction, and M :.W :. Bro. Hector Pablo Meixueiro, representing the other faction signed the "California Agreement" which summarized the terms for unification of the two groups. Following that meeting, the Grand Lodge group headed by G.M. Soto ratified the agreement The Grand Lodge group headed by G.M Meixueiro would not concur with the agreement. During the year, several attempts to encourage completion of the ratification process were unsuccessful. Both Grand Masters attended the current meeting of the Commission, and both agreed to negotiate BOLIVIA A new Grand Lodge has surfaced in Bolivia, named the Grand Lodge of York Rite for Bolivia, located in the Department (state) of Cochabamba. It was founded in June of 2008 and composed of members from the Grand Lodge of Bolivia. There is no evidence of them being constituted by a regular Grand Lodge, nor is there a pact or treaty that the Grand Lodge of Bolivia will share the jurisdiction with them. The claim of this Grand Lodge is that the Constitution of Bolivia gives them, and no one else, sovereignty in the Department of Cochabamba. It is suspected that this may be true politically, but not Masonicly. This Grand Lodge has not been recognized by any other Grand Lodges, but they claim legitimacy by virtue of the fact that their members come from Lodges of the Grand Lodge of Bolivia, which is recognized by the United Grand Lodge of England.
