Development of a Coupling Approach for Multi-Physics Analyses of Fusion Reactors
Development of a coupling approach for multi-physics analyses of fusion reactors Zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades eines Doktors der Ingenieurwissenschaften (Dr.-Ing.) bei der Fakultat¨ fur¨ Maschinenbau des Karlsruher Instituts fur¨ Technologie (KIT) genehmigte DISSERTATION von Yuefeng Qiu Datum der mundlichen¨ Prufung:¨ 12. 05. 2016 Referent: Prof. Dr. Stieglitz Korreferent: Prof. Dr. Moslang¨ This document is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution – Share Alike 3.0 DE License (CC BY-SA 3.0 DE): http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/de/ Abstract Fusion reactors are complex systems which are built of many complex components and sub-systems with irregular geometries. Their design involves many interdependent multi- physics problems which require coupled neutronic, thermal hydraulic (TH) and structural mechanical (SM) analyses. In this work, an integrated system has been developed to achieve coupled multi-physics analyses of complex fusion reactor systems. An advanced Monte Carlo (MC) modeling approach has been first developed for converting complex models to MC models with hybrid constructive solid and unstructured mesh geometries. A Tessellation-Tetrahedralization approach has been proposed for generating accurate and efficient unstructured meshes for describing MC models. For coupled multi-physics analyses, a high-fidelity coupling approach has been developed for the physical conservative data mapping from MC meshes to TH and SM meshes. Interfaces have been implemented for the MC codes MCNP5/6, TRIPOLI-4 and Geant4, the CFD codes CFX and Fluent, and the FE analysis platform ANSYS Workbench. Furthermore, these approaches have been implemented and integrated into the SALOME simulation platform. Therefore, a coupling system has been developed, which covers the entire analysis cycle of CAD design, neutronic, TH and SM analyses. -

An Efficient Strategy for Reliability-Based Design Optimization of Nonlinear Systems
AN EFFICIENT STRATEGY FOR RELIABILITY-BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF NONLINEAR SYSTEMS by Marcus H. Rademacher A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE Mechanical Engineering 2012 ABSTRACT AN EFFICIENT STRATEGY FOR RELIABILITY-BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF NONLINEAR SYSTEMS by Marcus H. Rademacher Engineers are constantly challenged with the task of creating better products. Design optimization is one of several modern tools that have been developed to meet this challenge. A common issue in optimization is that of finding a reliable design. A design may nominally pass all requirements, but when it is put into service stochastic variations in performance may cause the design to fail more often than is acceptable. The preferred solution is to perform reliability-based design optimization (RBDO), which accounts for uncertainty. In order to evaluate the reliability of a given design, considerable computational cost is necessary. The work presented in this thesis outlines a new strategy for performing RBDO where local response surfaces are used to reduce the computational burden of predicting the reliability. This strategy also takes advantage of the fact that the deterministic design optimization (DDO) and RBDO solutions are often spatially nearby each other, resulting in the opportunity to use inexpensive and well-worn DDO techniques to get a head start on finding the RBDO solution. The DDO study also provides ample data that can be used to fit response surfaces during the RBDO stage, without the need for additional evaluations. This new strategy is applied to several problems, including simple analytical functions and real engineering problems. -

The ultimate aim of this study was to investigate the effect of surface finish for a machined part which was programmed by two popular Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software namely as Catia V5 and Delcam (Delcam for Solidworks - DFS) by using scanned data obtained from one of the Reverse Engineering methods namely Three-Dimensional (3D) scanning process. A crank case cover was chosen as the physical part to be scanned and machined because of its sculptured shape and complex geometry. In this study, simultaneous three-axis machining programs were created and machined using three- axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling machine; DMC 635 Ecoline. Furthermore, all machining parameters are remained the same for both programs. Initially, the physical crank case cover gone through the first process called scanning process using a 3D scanner; model 700 CX in order to capture the 3D CAD data in points cloud form. The raw scanned data then gone through editing process to obtain better surfaces using Geomagic Studio software. Moreover, the stable and edited CAD model then undergone CAD/CAM programming process for both mentioned software respectively. -
