Action E.6: “Networking with other projects: Water rural supplies' events”

ruralsupplies.eu ec.europa.eu/environment/life/ Currently in Galicia 650,000 people consume water through autonomous solutions. In this region, the technical and economic feasibility of centralized infrastructures is severely limited by factors such as distance from highly populated area or the enormity of the investment needed to undertake them. Alternatively, there is the in-depth analysis of autonomous systems (developed spontaneously in response to the historic shortcomings of local administration) in connection with its impact on the environment (sometimes positive, sometimes not) and on the costs of services water.

The main objetive of LIFE RURAL SUPPLIES is to strengthen the sustainability of water supplies in scattered rural communities that lack clean water. This will be achieved by following the next 4 goals in an ordely fashion:

(1) Determine the most appropriate technical solutions in the uptake, distribution and subsequent treatment of groundwater consumed from wells and springs.

(2) Test autonomous facilities in rural housing to reduce the enviromental impact of domestic wastewater.

(3) Validate Water Safety Plans (WSP) as a tool to improve the security of supply.

(4) Define a feasible model of recovering cost for autonomous water services in rural areas, encouraging the efficient use of water resources.

To do so, with the help of the European Commission, Augas of Galicia, the Ministry of Health and the city of Abegondo intend to develop innovative and practical actions that improve the capabilities of the local population in provision of non-centralized water supply services and sanitation systems.

Biosphere Reserve " Marinas Coruñesas and Terras do Mandaean " promoted by the Association of Rural Desenvolvement " Mariñas - ", adopted by UNESCO within the MAB Programme in May 2013, covers a total of 113,970 ha. and a population of 189,902 inhabitants ( in 2011 ) across 17 municipalities in the province of A Coruña, Galicia – Spain: Abegondo, , , , Betanzos, , , Coirós, , Curtis, , Miño, Oleiros, Oza - , Paderne, Sada and Sobrado.

One of the priorities of the Management Plan "Mariñas Coruñesas and Terras do Mandeo" (2013- 2017) is the improvement of the people's life quality, promoting good practices in the water supply in rural communities.
