A study by national business consultant Wad- ley Donovan Growth Tech compared lease rates for several areas in NEPA with rates in Middletown, New York and Hightstown, New Jersey. On average, lease rates in NEPA are 79% of those in Middletown and just 69% of those in Hightstown. Likewise, in several Industrial Market Reports released in 2014, promi- nent national real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield listed average lease rates for industrial space in NEPA that were 74% of those in Central New Jersey and 59% of those in Northern New Jersey. 08 UTILITIES The region is utility strong with natural gas, public water and sewer, abundant power, and fiber service readily available to business parks. High pressure gas mains owned and maintained by UGI Penn Natural Gas provide service to area business parks. The discovery of an estimated 500 trillion cubic feet of natu- ral gas in the rock located under a 22.4 million acre area that covers much of NEPA, the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, and Upstate New York, has had an enormous impact on the re- gional economy. The Marcellus Shale region has been rec- ognized as the “largest unconventional natural gas reserve in the world.” Thousands of acres in NEPA and the Northern Tier have been leased by natural gas companies. Billions of dollars are being invested here by Southwest US energy companies. Because of this investment in Marcellus Shale, NEPA is expected to have access to abundant and affordable natural gas for de- cades to come. Water quality is good and pressures are very strong.

    July 21, 2015 Honorable Members of the U.S. House of Representatives: We are writing on behalf of the Coalition for Safe and Affordable Food to urge your support for H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act. At a time when legislative consensus is hard to come by, it is notable that substantial bipartisan support is building behind a national, voluntary food labeling standard for products containing ingredients derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Representatives Mike Pompeo (R-KS) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) have introduced H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act — bipartisan legislation that will ensure food labeling in the United States is uniform and science-based. Today interest groups across the country are pushing state-level labeling mandates that will exacerbate consumer confusion and drive up food prices. Instead of informing consumers, these state initiatives are filled with loopholes, exempting as much as two-thirds of foods. The result will be higher food prices for hard working American families – as much as $500 a year for a family of four, according to a study by Cornell University Professor William Lesseri. By putting a stop to the patchwork of state-based labeling requirements, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act will protect consumers from unpredictable price variations and protect farmers and food manufacturers from having to contend with inconsistent and costly regulations. GMOs have been an important part of our nation’s food supply for the past 20 years, and 70-80 percent of the foods people eat in the United States contain ingredients that have been genetically engineered.

It is vitally important for the House to call up and pass S. 764, the Senate-passed legislation on biotech disclosure, in order to avoid the economic costs of a patchwork of state laws that will directly impact consumers, farmers, and the entire food value chain. We strongly support S. 764, which builds on H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, introduced by Representatives Pompeo and Butterfield, which the House passed a year ago with overwhelming bipartisan support. The issue of biotech disclosure is one of the most significant issues that the agriculture and food industry has faced in recent years. The U.S. agriculture and food industry creates over 17 million jobs, representing nearly 1 in 10 jobs. This very system—which produces the most abundant, the highest quality, and the most affordable food in the world—will be threatened with large economic costs without a national uniform solution on this issue. The application of biotechnology to agricultural production has led to increased crop yields, decreased use of pesticides, and lower food costs for consumers.
