A message from Jen….

At this time the Music District remains closed and we continue to be extremely thoughtful about the health and wellbeing of everyone and that includes our current on-air programmers. We want to thank everyone for being patient and understanding as we get through these very challenging times and hope very much that everyone knows how we truly value all our volunteers regardless of whether you are currently actively involved right now with the station or not. Should you have any questions what so ever, please be sure to email

myself and Sean directly as we are working behind the scenes with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), local officials and The Music District to assess the situation each and every day. As we continue to do all we can to serve our community by providing entertainment, important local news and information that is critically related to COVID-19 and a sense of normalcy with our incredible music, we want everyone to know that we will resume to as much of a normal schedule as soon as it is possible. We miss everyone terribly and as you know we are all working remotely. I know that it’s been extremely challenging for many and so with that said, please let us know if you are having a hard time and keep in close touch so we

can be there for one another. Bless you all, stay healthy and stay tuned!

Fondly,

Artist: Foxfeather : KRFC Collection

Filed Under: Americana Reviewed By: Scott S.

This is a collection of Foxfeather singles and songs. It is bluesy, folksy and a little quirky. Lovely alto vocals are forward throughout. Some songs feature nice electric lead , while horns and even strings make appearances on others. The production values are very good throughout. Great collection of tunes. Artist: A.M. Pleasure Assassins Album: Careless Laughter

Filed Under: Rock Reviewed By: Scott S.

The 15th(!) release from this prolific Fort Collins band finds them in a very 90s lo-fi college alt rock mood. Guitar-forward up-tempo rock abounds, with unpolished punk-inspired vocals. Fans of the CMJ style music from the mid to late 90s will find something enjoyable on this short EP. A Bevin Luna cover is a highlight.

Artist: Granny Tweed Album: Apeshit Moonrock

Filed Under: Rock Reviewed By: Scott S.

The new release by Granny Tweed is really all over the place. 10 songs in 28 minutes gives this band some punk credibility, but they don’t hang their hat on that peg alone. Americana, hard rock, country and surf rock all wind their way through this collection. It’s all interesting, and no matter the style these creative tunes retain an angry urgency. I wish there weren’t quite so many instrumental tracks, but this is still an enjoyable, surprising listen.

A mesmerizing collection of R.L. Burnside cover songs by local blues troubadours, She Ain’t Here traverses a sampling of this 90s blues hero and alt rock darling. Grant Sabin & The Juke Joint Highball deliver a smooth and consistent performance over these 8 songs. This collection adds a welcome full band rock punch that the originals typically eschew.

Artist: Runaway Grooms Album: Tied to the Sun

Filed Under: Bluegrass Americana Reviewed By: Scott S.

This is by-the-numbers mellow Colorado mountain folk-. Tied to the Sun is the debut album from Runaway Grooms, an up and coming Colorado ski country folk rock outfit. “The Grooms’” main strength is sweet three-part harmonies and a devotion to the heyday of that mellow 70s folk sound. Every song sounds at home on a mountain stage and evokes the sweetness of a hazy summer evening. Some of the songs stretch out more than is necessary and the album loses momentum in the second half, but there is promise here.

Artist: Jackie and the Racket Album: Goal Digger

Filed Under: Country Reviewed By: Scott S.

There is a delightful naivety and wry humor to the songs in this short collection of lo-fi country tunes from Jackie and the Racket. Even though it is country through and through, this music would feel home in a Wes Anderson movie alongside quirky indie pop and 60s French “it girl” folk. I think this is mostly due to the dry, almost punk vocal work. I think you’ll either love it or hate it for this reason, but intentional or not, this little EP stands a bit apart from the usual country fare as a result.

Artist: Ryan Dart Album: The Farm EP

Filed Under: Folk Reviewed By: Scott S.

A short set of great sounding folk/bluegrass/country tunes from Ryan Dark, including covers of Tom Waits and Townes Van Zant. Ryan Dart’s vocals have a battle-tested and well-worn quality to them and remind me of John Hiatt. The production is bright and clear. This is a solid collection of songs.

Artist: Jeremy Dion Album: More Lately EP

Filed Under: Folk Reviewed By: Scott S.

Boulder’s Jeremy Dion presents a collection of acoustic leaning songs in the tradition of John Denver and other earnest 70s folk rockers. Jeremey is a talented songwriter, and the production and recording and sound quality are very good. The songs are unabashedly sincere and earnest, which fits into the transition of John Denver, Harry Chapin, and the like. There is nothing groundbreaking here, and Jeremy’s style and delivery may seem a little quaint in the 2020s, but there’s always a place in the world for the folk singer facing the world with his heart on his sleeve. Fans of John Denver will particularly enjoy this release. Not a fan of the album design, though!

Artist: Too Slim and the Taildraggers Album: The Remedy

Filed Under: Rock Reviewed By: Tim L.

Too Slim & the TD's, whose name derives from a Howlin' Wolf song, have been a Spokane, WA regional favorite (they made a move to Nashville in 2011) since the early 1990s. This trio of guitar (Tim Langford - the only constant among many lineup changes), bass and drums play a Blues/R&R mix with a lean muscular sound. They come across as true devotees with a real feel for the genres they inhabit and, in my estimation, deserve a wider audience. At least a half-dozen good cuts to choose from here on The Remedy, due to be released on July 17th.

Artist: Cup-a-Jo Album: Between Jobs

Filed Under: Blues Reviewed By: Scott S.

Cup-a-Jo is an unabashed blues band from Denver. “Between Jobs” finds them in a very mellow, slow mood. Sound quality and production are good, and the vocals have a delightful, rough, raspy quality. Overall, I’d like to see more variation in tempos and some of the songs tend to drag. What probably works really well in a live setting feels repetitive on a studio release. The production values of this album are quite good. While it was recorded in Louisiana, it was mixed and mastered in Colorado. There are many upbeat and fun songs on this album to choose among for airplay.

The backing band is quite strong with lovely backing vocals by Erin Chapin and Caitlin Cowley. I can’t recommend this album highly enough! There are 3 small downsides to the album: 1) Tracks 1 & 2 contains words that violate FCC regulations. 2) On Track 5 and 11, the first 15 or so seconds are voices and laughter of the band before the songs begins, 3) Track 7 is very fun but only 1:11 long. There are two instrumental songs, tracks 2 and 9, that are interesting. Track 4 “Well, You Can Do It Without Me” is a cover of a Father John Misty song. This is an interesting new release by the Jayhawks because all of the 15 original songs are played in the style of early Rock and Roll of the 60’s and 70’s. I must admit I was excited to review this album, but I was disappointed at the result. While I can recommend 5 songs to play, most of the songs are slow with subjects such as loss, disappointment and pain. Two of the tracks, 6 and 7, have such strange lyrics that I recommend you skip them completely. The 4 members of this band are very good musicians and provide nice harmony and lead vocals. This album is not in the style you’ve become accustomed to from The Jayhawks.
