But by the end of that century, Lombards coming from Northern Italy had conquered most of the peninsula, with Byzantium retaining only Calabria and Sicily. From the middle of the 9th century, the Aghlabid Dynasty of Ifrîquya (the original name of Eastern Maghreb) raided Sicily to take possession of the island. A new Byzantine offensive at the end of the century took back most of the lost territories in Apulia and Calabria and established Bari as the new provincial capital. Lombard territories further north were broken down between three cities led by princes: Capua, Salerno, and Benevento. Further east, Italian duchies of Naples, Amalfi, and Gaeta tried to keep their autonomy through successive alliances with the various regional powers to try and maintain their commercial interests. Ethnic struggles in Sicily between Arabs and Berbers on the one side, and various dynasties on the other side, led to power fragmentation: The island is divided between four rival military factions at the beginning of the 11th century. Beyond its natural boundaries, Southern Italy had to cope with two external powers which were looking to expel Byzantium from what they considered was part of their area of influence: the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire. -

We just celebrated the Sheri La Macchia & graduation of 21 seniors, out of 46 majors, during Carmela Scala a joyful evening attended by 74 people. Three 4 UNDERGRADUATE NEWS ABOVE: Paola Gambarota among our seniors completed an honors thesis. & ITALIAN NIGHT We were very impressed when students attending Prof. Rhiannon Welch’s senior 6 LECTURES & IGS seminar organized a two-day conference on the topic of “New and Old Italian 8 RUTGERS DAY Identities,” demonstrating a strong commitment to explore timely issues of 10 GRADUATE NEWS citizenship and immigration. One of these students, Nicoletta Romano, continued to study these questions with the support of the Lloyd Gardner Fellowship Program 12 ALUMNI REUNION & NEWS in Leadership and Social Policy, under the guidance of Professor Welch. Another 16 FACULTY NEWS Italian major, Mihaela Sanderson, was selected as the author of the “Best Poster” for back cover the Humanities portion of the Aresty Symposium, the result of a research project DEPARTMENT INITIATIVES developed with the support of her mentor Prof. Andrea Baldi. This is the second consecutive time that a student majoring in Italian is recognized in this way. There have been some changes in our department, and we miss our former friends and colleagues, our beloved Carol Feinberg, our kindhearted Robin Rogers, and our former language coordinator Daniele de Feo. -

Naples - Campania The city, capital of Campania, was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the world. It served as the capital of the Duchy of Naples from 661—1139, the Kingdom of Naples from 1282-1816 then the Two Sicilies until the unification of Italy in 1861. It is now the 3rd largest city in Italy and one of the leading ports in Europe. The historic city center is the largest in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its full title, De optimo reipublicae statu deque nova insula Utopia libellus vere aureus, nec minus salutaris quam festinus, clarissimi disertissimique viri Thomae Mori inclytae civitatis Londinesis civis et Vicecomitis, exemplifies Utopia‟s tendency to open questions rather than to resolve them.
