I want to acknowledge the commitment to your sporting discipline that will be so evident in this year’s competition. The challenge that you as individual athletes have faced to compete is inspiration to both fellow competitors and the wider community. The preparedness to pit yourself against each other and the elements is exciting and takes personal courage. In the words of the late and great Sir Peter Snell, “when it's pouring rain and you're bowling along through the wet, there's satisfaction in knowing you're out there and the others aren't.” Good luck everyone. Andy Foster Mayor of Wellington City Acesports and Athletics Wellington Track & Field present the 2021 TEAM LEDGER Harcourts Capital Classic Track & Field Meeting Welcome to Newtown Park on behalf of Athletics Wellington. • Olympic Weightlifting
Olympic Weightlifting Olympic weightlifting, or weightlifting, is an athletic discipline in the modern Olympic programme in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Qualifying – the road to Rio Qualification is based on the results of the 2014 and 2015 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships and the 2016 Continental Championships. No more than six men and four women can qualify per country, with a maximum of two athletes per event. Brazil, as host country, is guaranteed five quota places, three for men and two for women. No New Zealand weightlifters have qualified for Rio as yet. The best chance for qualification for our weightlifters is via the Oceania qualifying event being held in Fiji in early 2016. At this event qualifying is based on team results, not individuals. Teams must place in the top three for women to gain one Olympic spot, and men must place in the top four to gain a spot. A women’s team has seven members and a men’s team has eight. If the New Zealand teams are successful at this qualification event in gaining places at the Rio Games, then our selectors will choose one male weightlifter and one female weightlifter to go (in agreement with the NZOC). Rio 2016 Weightlifting When: Competition will take place over 10 days from 7-14 August 2016 (with no competition on 15 August). Where: Riocentro – Pavilion 2. Men will compete in eight events based on athlete weight categories, from under 56kg to the super- heavyweights at over 105kg.

An analysis of New Zealand athletes’ performances at the World Youth Athletics Championships 1999 – 2017 and their subsequent performances at World Junior Championships, World Athletics Championships, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games. by Stephen Hollings PhD INTRODUCTION There is much debate around the world and in New Zealand about the value and the philosophy surrounding the World Youth Athletics Championships (WYC). The WYC are for athletes aged under 18 years of age at the 31st December in the year of competition. The WYC have been held biennially from 1999 - 2015. The final WYC were held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2017. The WYC are viewed by many as being “the first step on the ladder to elite senior success” The debate as to whether competing at the IAAF World Youth Championships is necessary for future achievement as a senior athlete is a topic that regularly engages coaches of youth athletes, but the discussion is usually based on anecdotal evidence and personal bias. In order to lift the debate as to the value and reliability of the WYC as the “first step” from an exchange of statements of uncorroborated opinion, which are, in the main, based on individual case studies, it is essential that supporting empirical data be obtained and analysed. The following is an analysis of New Zealand’s participation at nine editions of the WYC. This analysis should trigger an informed and spirited debate regarding future philosophy surrounding the event and athlete’s participation at them and future expectations of these athletes. ANALYSIS New Zealand has had 126 individual athletes compete at the nine WYC from 1999-2015.
