Member of IOC, ANOC, ONOC, CGF, PGC & ORADO ______________________________________________________________________________________ 2007 VASANOC ANNUAL REPORT ADMINISTRATION • A new SDO in 2007, James Kalo and reemployment of Henry as CEO. • Office currently has Development Officers of Archery, Basketball, Rugby Union, Tennis and Table-Tennis. • New AYAD, Jonathan Coyne for VSFD Program • IOC approved new Logo (above) in October. OLYMPIC SOLIDARITY • Olympic Day Event organized in conjunction with Team Vanuatu Parade in Vila. • Sports Medicine Course in May 2007 • Talent ID Program – delayed since May, but tentatively scheduled for February 2008. • Archery Development Officer awarded Coaching Scholarships to study in Egypt. • Tennis athlete awarded Scholarship to study in the USA. • 2012 Young Athletes Scholarships continue to be awarded to Tennis and Table-Tennis. • Beijing Athlete Scholarships awarded to Mose Kamut. 2007 SPG • Vanuatu participated in Athletics, Boxing, Football, Golf, Netball, Rugby Union, Table-Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball (Beach) and did better than some people thought if we were judged overall by: o By Total Number of Medals won, 12 compared to 2003, 21 and 1999, 22. o By Total of Gold medals won. o By how many Sports in the Team won medals. o By how we made our mark in certain sports in consecutive Games. o By how many “new” sports won a Medal. o By how many previous Medal winning Sports, repeated or maintained their record in Samoa. o By the performances of the “Team” sports and “Individual” sports. o By the honest and serious attempts made by individual Athletes/Sports to win a medal. o By how many Technical Officials we had in the Team. o By how many of Athletes were homegrown. o By whether we performed according the resources we had readily available. THE NATIONAL FEDERATIONS Athletics • Still in VASANOC’s Elite Program – the NODS (National Olympic Development Squads) Project mainly because of IAAF wildcard system for Olympic Games. • Moses awarded Beijing Athlete Scholarship in 2006 • Arnold Sorina awarded IAAF Scholarship for HPTC, NZ and was Most Promising Athlete of the 2007 SPG. • Coaching Courses for Throws conducted by James Goulding. • Overall performance in SPG could have been better. • Candidature for DNSS Program in 2008. Archery • Secured a strip of land 5-minutes drive outside of Port Vila, beside Korman Stadium. • Sport was reactivated towards end of 2004 • Appointment of Francis Runa as new Junior Development Officer • DO awarded Coaching Scholarship to study in Egypt. Basketball • Continued employment of Peter Izono as fulltime Development Officer in 2007. • Active use of website and Sportzware program. • Visits from Zone Development Officer, Eddie Calic in May and December 2007 Boxing • Performance dropped administratively and athletically • Suspended from NODS Project • Overall performance in SPG could have been better. Cricket • Has an excellent group of leaders lead by Mark Stafford. • Currently has Most Consistent Schools Sports Outreach Program. • Placement of AYAD Officer, Nick Cassidy in 2007 • Hosted ICC EAP U19 Tournament in 2007. • Excellent performance of U19 Team in recent ICC EAP Tournament. • National Team came 2 nd in ICC EAP Trophy in New Zealand in November and has qualified for the ICC World Cricket League Division 5, to be held in Jersey in May 2008. • Approval by IOC for ICC to an IOC-recognised international federation will be a greater boost for the sport in the years to come. Football • Success of National Under 12 Team in Europe in the Daone Cup 2007 was highlight of the year, challenge for Federation is to keep these players together for future success. • National Beach Team came second in Oceania Qualifiers for FIFA Beach World Cup. • Won a Bronze medal in the Men’s Competition of the 2007 SPG & qualified for World Cup Play-Offs. • Consecutive Bronze in SPG, re-established Vanuatu as a top footballing nation of the region with Seule Soromon as topscorer. • Placements of players in Suva’s Soccer Association with Joseph Namariau and Seule Soromon and Seimata Chilia making good names for Vanuatu. • Appointment of Marco Herrominly to FIFA Futsal Commission is boost for this discipline of football. • Recent upgrading of Port Vila Stadium for the World Cup matches means that we now have a pitch capable of hosting international matches. • Establishing of U12 National League for Primary Schools with Winners going onto Oceania Play-Offs for 2008 Daone Cup. • Annual Sportswell Competitions continue to be main competitions for U16 and U14 to play against school teams from Australia and New Zealand. • New Executive Board lead by Lambert Maltock elected in November. Rugby Union • Has new Executive elected lead by Mr Virasen Bakakoto. • New Development Officer, Geoffrey Kausei appointed this year. • National 15’s Team beat New Caledonia and Solomons with a loss to PNG this year. • Performance in 2007 SPG by the National Sevens Team could have been better. Table-Tennis • Completed Development National Sport Structure (DNSS) Program in 2006 • Qualified Umpires & Timekeepers in 2006 • Table-Tennis was new sport in National Games in 2006. • Placement of player, Yoshua Shing in China • Excellent performance in 2007 SPG – 2 Golds, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze! • Golden Girls continue with golden success in Team Event in SPG! • Priscilla Tommy wins Most Outstanding Athlete of Team Vanuatu with 2 Golds and 1 Silver medal! • Benefits from continued Chinese Government assistance for employment of Coach & Training Camps in China. • Building of National Gym currently underway. • Placement of Yoshua Shing in China under ITTF Scholarship. Tennis • Scholarship for Marie Liwsulili to USA. • ANZ & VASANOC School’s Program actively underway. • Actively participates in OTF competitions. • Appointment of VTF President, Mr Cyrille Mainguy to OTF Board. • Appointment of Cyrille Mainguy as Captain of Oceania Davis Cup Team. • National Team reached semi-finals of 2007 SPG Team, Doubles and Singles Events. Volleyball • Beach Volleyball very active & currently running Federation. • Beach Volley was new sport in National Games in 2006. • Acquired plot of land and built standard pitch in 2006 • Organized 1 st National Champs in 2006 • Women’s Team, Silver in 2007 Oceania Champs & Bronze in SPG 2007 • AYAD for Development Officer for Coach in 2007 • FIVB Course in July 2007. OTHER AREAS OF DEVELOPMENT • VASANOC Website o Thanks to Sportingpulse & ONOC for this project & esp. new site! o VASANOC has very active site www.oceaniasport.com/vanuatu • AYAD Program o VASANOC acknowledges assistance of ASC in this. o Hosted AYAD Officers for Pikinini Pleiplei in 2005, Marketing in 2006 and 2007 for VSFD Program. • Sport Medicine Commission o Commission set-up in May 2007 • Sports Education Program o Vanuatu piloted the Oceania Sport Education Program in 2006. o Employment of OSEP Project Officer, Leipanga Shem ended early in 2007 o Outreach was done in Vila and to a number of rural communities/islands. o Have plans to use materials within VSFD framework. • National Sports Policy o VASANOC partnered with Government to organize the 1st Forum for Vanuatu in 2006 resulting in production of 1 st National Sports Policy for the country (available in our website under Publications & Reports) • Vanuatu Sports For Development Program (VSFD) o VASANOC’s partnered with Ministry of Sport Australian Sports Commission to draft the Design Plan for this Program, which took over 5 months to complete. o International Partners are Aust Sport Commission and AusAID. o Targeting Youth in rural com in 2 provinces, Tafea & Penama o Design Plan available on our website. • Sportsworld Visit o VASANOC was visited by Len Orlander from Sportsworld in May 2007 to promote the 2008 Beijing Olympic Tickets Sales. Also provided opportunity for VASANOC to network with Sportworld in person. PARTCIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS/SEMINARS o ORADO Meeting in Nadi in March attended by Timothy Phatu. o SPG Chefs Meeting in Apia, in March attended by Fatani Sope. o ONOC AGM in Pago Pago in March attended by Joe Carlo, Seru Korikalo and Fatani Sope. o IOC HIV/AIDS Workshop in PNG in April attended by Timothy Phatu. o Beijing Chef de Mission Seminar in Beijing in August attended by Antoine Boudier. o ONOC SGs Meeting in Sydney in October attended by Seru Korikalo. o Oceania Chefs Meeting in Sydney in October attended by Antoine Boudier. o CGF AGM in Sri Lanka in November attended by Joe Carlo. o ONOC Executive Meeting in Raratonga in November attended by Joe Carlo who is a Member of ONOC Board. o As Executive Member of ANOC Board, Joe Carlo attended the ANOC Board Meeting in Lausanne in December.
