Amateur Hour Fills the House NOVEMBER 2010 VOLUME 59 NUMBER 2 Amateur Hour fills the house After the Upper Columbia Con- ference’s Go Mission Fest weekend and after the first snow of the year had fallen, the gymnasium stage was set for the annual Amateur Hour on the evening of November 13. Organized by girls’ club this year and with Mark Janke as MC, the program was entitled “A Night in New York City.” The gym was filled with people ready to enjoy the 16 acts that ranged from serious classical music performances to hu- Elliott Berger, Grayson Andregg, and River Davis morous skits. Students diligently practice and evolve acts in hopes of taking a L spot on the stage. Over 40 vocal recitals, in- strumental performances, piano acts, and skits put their dignity on the line for auditions on October 19. But the P available spots for the show consist of only four each for piano, skits, vocals, and instrumentals. This giving of cold showers as a reward for romantic involvement is an old tradition here at UCA. It has been here for as long as anyone can remem- ber, but there are mixed feelings about this tradition. One student from the girls’ dorm said that there were more cold showers during first quarter than during all of last year. Maivnkauj Yang said that her first reaction when she hears the an- nouncement that there is a cold shower is “Another one?” Noemi Manzano said they are really annoying and stupid and that we have way too many. -15 ii UCLA Schedule of Classes Fall 2014 What’s New? New Minor: Iranian Studies The Near Eastern Languages and Cultures department has established a new minor in Iranian Studies. The minor gives stu- dents the opportunity to study Iranian languages and civilization while majoring in a different field of study. Introductory courses in the minor provide a foundation in Iranian history, languages, and religions, as well as Persian languages and literature. Other courses in the minor enable students to study particular areas of interest in greater depth. New Minor: Teaching Secondary Mathematics The Teaching Secondary Mathematics minor is designed for students majoring in fields other than mathematics who plan to teach secondary mathematics after graduation. The minor provides recognition for completion of prerequisite coursework for the Joint Mathematics Education Program and prepares students for topics covered on the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) Mathematics test. Instructional Enhancement Initiative (IEI) Fee Billing Change Effective Fall 2014, the IEI fee is converted to a campus-based flat fee and charged to all undergraduate students. Previously the fee was unit-based and billed later in the quarter, based on enrollment in courses as of the fourth week of the quarter. Some students were not aware of the charge, and for some it impacted their ability to enroll in subsequent quarters or impeded their ability to graduate. With the new billing timing, students will be better informed of the fee and the fee can be included in finan- cial aid packages. This is not a fee increase. The fee generates the same amount of revenue as it did previously.

"When we put the last record out, iTunes were prob- ably the fifth or sixth account," he says. "To come back on this record and have them be the No. 1 account in America, that's probably one of the biggest, most sig- nificant differences." At iTunes, digital album pre- orders began May 6, when "Violet Hill" became available as a download, with consumers able to secure a bonus track to be de- livered with it on album release day. The street date version of the album via iTunes will have a different exclusive bonus track, plus an exclusive music video. Holmes also cites the growth of YouTube as a new factor. "So that's a part of your marketing plan now, which it wouldn't have been three -and -a -half years ago. I was cleaning my desk out recently and found an old MySpace marketing plan when they'd come to us on the last record, [when] they had about 400,000 members. We did a big promotion with them, but it's funny looking back that that was a new platform, and social networking in general was not part of your mar- keting plan. Now it's a major part." But the Coldplay manager regards the retail arena as no less vital. "It's just as important to me. People still buy CDs, and Coldplay are one of those artists where a lot of the fans want to own the CD, they want We all had our corner office in a big tower block, but the whole package." there was no vibe.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles PET Imaging of Nucleoside Metabolism for Individualized Therapy A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular and Medical Pharmacology by Jason Thanh Lee 2012 © COPYRIGHT Jason Thanh Lee 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION PET Imaging of Nucleoside Metabolism for Individualized Therapy by Jason Thanh Lee Doctor of Philosphy in Molecular and Medical Pharmacology University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Caius G. Radu, Chair Molecular imaging diagnostics such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) have significantly improved cancer patient management. PET allows the non-invasive, whole body imaging of metabolic processes and has been extensively used to detect lesions and monitor patient response to therapeutic intervention. Despite the development of a large number of PET probes, only a limited few find utility for imaging cancer. Furthermore, complex probe metabolism may render image interpretation difficult. With these factors in mind, my work focuses on improving PET imaging of nucleoside metabolism for cancer detection and prediction of treatment response. The thymidine analog, 3’-deoxy-3’-18F-fluorothymidine (18F-FLT), is extensively used as a measurement of tumor proliferation. However, its use is limited in tissues of murine origin, which do not avidly take up 18F-FLT. Here, we describe a pharmaceutical intervention using dipyridamole (DPA) to extend the utility of 18F-FLT PET for imaging mice tissues and tumors. ii Administration of DPA ten minutes prior to injection of probe allowed visualization of thymus, bone marrow and spleen tissues in C57/BL6 mice and murine tumor models of melanoma, lung carcinoma, and leukemia.

  • Of Kappa Kappa- Gamma Fall 1968
OF KAPPA KAPPA- GAMMA FALL 1968 •• And God said~ Let there be light: and there was light.!!!! (Genesis 1:3) Light from that first dawn continues to bless God's universe. The light of sun and moon and stars, electric light illuminating the lives of millions, or the light of the single candle you hold-all dispel darkness. In time, the darkness of ignorance is dispelled by the light of knowledge. One such significant moment of enlightenment which occurred a hundred years ago opened wide the doors of institutions of higher learning formerly closed to women. Seeking to improve their new opportunities for education, some of those early college girls established the first women's Greek letter societies. The meetings they held were exercises in improvement. They prepared and read literary papers; they tried out musical and artistic talents; they debated and practiced oratory. The first reproof on record administered by members to a fellow member was reserved for the girl whose literary paper was judged not up to standards. Today when Kappas light candles in Kappa ceremonies, they do so to sym bolize the light they have promised to cherish throughout their lives. The lighted candles memorialize lives of women in all the Kappa chapters, since 1870, and the promises they make to uphold truth and goodness, faith and honor and reverence for God and His creations. "The power of our light is great, for better or worse. It is greater when we band together as in a sisterhood than when we stand alone." ( -Dr. Doris Seward, at the Candlelight Dinner, 1968 Biennial Convention.) OF KAPPA KAPPA GAMMA The first coUege women's magazine.
