EIGHTEENTH CENTURY HUMANITARIANISM: Collaboration "Between Surope and ^America HE growth of a humanitarian spirit is clearly in evidence in the eighteenth century. Much of its literature inspired it, as well Tas reflected it, and a number of organizations aimed to ame- liorate the sad lot of mankind. One of the hardest fights was against Negro slavery and the slave trade, and the most forceful campaigners in this struggle were the Quakers of England and America. The spirit and the letter of legislation affecting bonded whites was also affected by eighteenth century rationalism and humanity. But even before their influence was felt, a new world community that valued the life of man more highly than the old world demanded less fre- quently the ultimate penalty. Subject as it naturally was to English precedents, the colonial code reduced the great many offences still punishable by death in England to eleven in Massachusetts. These New England Puritans were more humane, too, in drawing up laws protecting women, children, strangers, servants, and dumb animals. Almost alone among the seventeenth century legislators, Preserved Smith notes, "the Massachusetts General Court forbade any man to exercise any tyranny or cruelty toward any brute creature which are usually kept for man's use."1 More fundamental changes in the character of the laws did not come until after the epoch-making works of Montesquieu and Bec- caria. Stemming from these sources there accumulated a number of plans and discussions that called for a reconsideration of legal systems, particularly with reference to crime and punishment. Jefferson made a careful study of William Eden's "Principles of Venal J^aw (London, 1772), and into his Common Vlace "Book the young Virginian copied long passages from On Qrimes and Punishments and extracts from Montesquieu. -

Chapter I shows how the University used its improving Library to present to clients and visitors an image of the University's social and intellectual ideology. Both medium and message in this case told of a migration into the printed book of the University's functions, intellectual, spiritual, and moral, a migration which was going forward likewise in the other Scottish universities and in Scottish culture at large. Chapters II and III chart that migration respectively in religious discourse and in moral education. This growing importance of the book prompted some Scottish professors to devise agencies other than consumer demand to control what was read in their universities and beyond, and indeed what was printed. Chapter IV reviews those devices, one of which was the subject Rhetoric, now being reformed to bring modern literature into its discipline. -

Shakespeare’s Sentiments: Scottish Moral Philosophy and Literary Criticism ”Thus, the moralist becomes a critic: and the two sciences of ethics and criticism appear to be intimately and very naturally connected. In truth, no one who is unacquainted with the human mind, or entertains improper notions of human conduct, can discern excellence in the higher species of poetical composition.” William Richardson (Essays, 1797, p. 398) by John Dwyer York University, Toronto, Ontario Canada 2 Scholars of the eighteenth-century thought have largely neglected Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) in favour of his better-known Wealth of Nations (1776). While TMS has recently begun to receive the attention it richly rewards, the focus of scholars has been to assess the philosophical roots and analytical innovations of TMS in general and its connection to WN in particular.1 A serious limitation of many of these scholarly investigations is that they obscure the interdisciplinary nature of eighteenth- century Scottish moral philosophy and overlook its connection to fields such as literature and genres like theatre and the novel. Subjects like ethics and literature were intertwined in ways that complemented reinforced one another. Enlightenment writers did not hive themselves off into the separate domains that characterize contemporary eighteenth- century studies. The relationship between developments in literary criticism and Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759; major revision in 1790) is a fascinating case in point. In their painstaking introduction to the 1976 Glasgow edition TMS, D.D. Raphael and A.L. Macfie devote considerable attention to the influence of Mandeville, Hutcheson, and Hume on Smith’s ethics, but entirely neglect the overwhelming influence of the dramatic arts in shaping his spectatorial approach. -

They are now housed in the Archives Division of Birmingham Central Library with the shelfmark JWP (ACC 94/69) James Watt James Watt (1736-1819), surveyor, engineer, mathematical and musical instrument maker, chemist and inventor, is famous for his invention in 1765 of the separate condenser, the crucial refinement of Thomas Newcomen's steam engine. The steam engine as improved by Watt was probably the most important technological advance of the industrial revolution; with the fuel economies of the separate condenser, steam engines could operate anywhere. Later improvements included a new coupling so that the engine could work in both directions, rotative motion, and a governor for safety. -
From Aristocratic Support to Academic Office: Patronage and University in the Scottish Enlightenment
FROM ARISTOCRATIC SUPPORT TO ACADEMIC OFFICE: PATRONAGE AND UNIVERSITY IN THE SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT Iris Fleßenkämper Although international research on the Scottish Enlightenment today still readily draws on methods and questions from the early history of biog- raphy and ideas, recent scientific approaches have proven themselves by merging these perspectives and enhancing them from a social-historical point of view. Consistent with a new “social history of knowledge”,1 most research on the specific historical conditions of the production and dis- semination of enlightened knowledge focuses on the literary and pub- lishing culture of eighteenth-century Scotland.2 However, the role that social networks played in the rise and legitimation of knowledge and the sciences has only recently begun to be studied extensively.3 The pres- ent article aims to elucidate the transition in forms of scholarly patron- age that finally led to the establishment of professional autonomy in eighteenth-century Scotland. Enlightenment historians still tend to assume that the social back- bone of this movement included members of a “free intelligentsia” (Karl Mannheim) who were “beholden to none but themselves, the public who bought their writings or subscribed to their lectures, and such cultural middlemen as publishers.”4 However, authors such as David Hume, who received a substantial income from his publications, most notably for his History of England,5 and who was able to live on his writings even in the longer term, remained an exception. The majority of eighteenth- century Scottish scholars were still dependent on the support of mostly aristocratic patrons to finance their research. The aim of this investigation is to set into historical context the intense interest in tribal societies exhibited in the writings of the leading members of the Scottish intelligentsia. Increasing contact with and awareness of non- European societies in the eighteenth century raised the problem of accounting for both the diversities and uniformities existing among the world’s peoples and their societies. After midcentury many enlightened moral theorists drew upon the methods and epistemologies of the new natural sciences to reestablish the moral sciences on natural historical foundations. Human and social development were ii understood as analogous to generative theories posited in the vitalist life sciences of epigenesis, which was instrumental, most notably, in the stadial or “four-stages” theory of progress articulated by Adam Smith. -
