The stand taken by the Scottish nation throughout the Schism was particu- larly significant, yet, until recently, Scottish historians had explored only inadequately the original sources existing in the Vatican Archives. During the academic year 1961-2, the University of Glasgow awarded me a research scholarship with the specific aim of examining the letter-books, or registers, of one of the rival popes, and of noting systematically all the entries concerning Scotland. A microfilm of this source material is deposited with the Department of Scottish History. This project was instrumental in introducing me to the late Dr Annie I. Dunlop. It won her immediate and enthusiastic approval and she followed its progress with lively interest. Only a few months before her death, Dr Dunlop asked me, if I was still working hard for Scotland !     THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF SCOTLAND (SCOTS) MARCHES, TUNES MARCHES, TUNES REGIMENT REGIMENT AND SONGS AND SONGS AL AL introduction Towards the end of the 16th Century drums and fifes became a recognised part of the military establishment. All Captains were required to have drummers and fifers in their companies. One of their duties was to ensure that all soldiers in the company recognised their company march. In Scotland the bagpipes had for centuries been the mainstay of martial music, particularly in the Highlands. Contemporary reports from the 1630’s mention a pipe band in Hepburn’s Regiment of 36 musicians and refer to “The Scottish March” believed to be the forerunner of Dumbarton’s Drums. Throughout history there are many examples of military musicians raising the morale of fighting troops at critical moments in battle. Piper George Findlater on the North West unes and Songs Frontier of Afghanistan in 1897, Bugle Major John Shaul in South Africa in 1899 and Piper Daniel Laidlaw at the battle of Loos on the Western Front in 1915, all of whom were awarded the Victoria Cross. Indeed up to the beginning of the 20th century musical instruments such as drums, bugles and bagpipes were used to pass commands and orders during battle. Soldiers have a rich history of writing and singing songs to raise morale and to foster a unit identity distinct from other regiments. This publication is intended to list those marches, tunes, calls and songs relevant to the battalions of The Royal Regiment of Scotland. It also lays down the routine and ceremonial dress worn by pipers, drummers and bandsmen of Pipes and Drums and Military Bands within the Regiment.

Purpose 1.1 To seek Council’s agreement to grant the Freedom of South Ayrshire to the Royal Highland Fusiliers, the Royal Regiment of Scotland, and to the Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick’s Own) Yeomanry. 2. Recommendation 2.1 It is recommended that the Council grants the Freedom of South Ayrshire to: (1) the Royal Highland Fusiliers (2 Scots), the Royal Regiment of Scotland; and (2) the Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick’s Own) Yeomanry (6 Scots); and that consideration of funding for this event be delegated to the General Purposes Panel. 3. Background 3.1 Local authorities may award the Freedom of their area to individuals or organisations in terms of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. Although originally the title of ‘freeman’ accorded certain rights and privileges on the holder, no such rights or privileges are now conferred, and the Freedom is now awarded as a mark of respect. 3.2 The Council, in 2009, granted the Freedom of South Ayrshire to the Royal Navy (HMS Gannet) and to the Royal Air Force (Prestwick). To grant these two requests would complete the award to each of the armed services linked with Ayr and South Ayrshire. 3.3 The Royal Highland Fusiliers (2 Scots) has a long and distinguished connection with Ayr and South Ayrshire with a history dating back to 1678.

    Art UK Sculpture Project: Studying the Provenance and Materials of a World War II Memorial to Fallen Royal Scots Fusiliers Soldiers Diya Nagaraj Academic Supervisor: Dr. Margaret Smith MLitt Technical Art History Placement Supervisor: Dr. Joyce E. M. Steele, FSA Introduction As part of Art UK’s Sculpture project to digitize sculpture collections around the UK, the sculptural pieces of The Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum in Glasgow had to be documented and catalogued. This involved locating them, photographing them, and when possible, conducting further research to establish makers and provenance. One such sculpture involved in this project was a statuette based on the war memorial at Ayr to personnel of The Royal Scots Fusiliers who fell in the Second World War (Figure 1).1 The initial goals of research on this sculpture were to establish a maker, understand its relationship to the full-sized monument in Ayr, and discover how it entered the museum’s collection. These then expanded to include finding out more about the materials involved in its production. Technical Examination Once it was established that the sculpture in the collection was a plaster model made by Charles d’Orville Pilkington Jackson, the question was raised as to what type of plaster the sculptor used and why this particular statue had been painted to appear like bronze. Therefore, the model was viewed under ultraviolet light and three samples were taken from areas of loss along the bottom edge of the back of the statue Figure 2: C.     The Assaye Regimental Colour of the 74th Regiment Jennifer Brunton of Foot MLitt Technical Art History 2016-2017 The Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum was given the Assaye Regimental Colour of the 74th Regiment of Foot by St. Giles Cathedral, however beyond this not much is known about the Assaye Colour. This project looks at both contextual research and scientific analysis to provide a greater understanding of regimental colours, considering the value they carry to the regiment and consequently their importance within the museum collection.
