(is is longer than I’ve lived in any given house or worked for any employer. I attribute this longevity to the lack of deadlines and time clocks and the almost total freedom to create a journal that is a showcase for our state and society. (ose fourteen issues contained 60 articles, 50 book reviews, and 25 tributes to Fellows, for a total of 536 pages. I estimate about 350,000 words, an accumulation that records the stories of Oregon’s botanists, native )ora, and plant communities. No one knows how many hours, but who counts the hours for time spent doing what one enjoys? All in all, this editing gig has been quite an education for me. I can’t think of a more e*ective and enjoyable way to make new friends and learn about Oregon plants and related natural history than to edit the journal of the Native Plant Society of Oregon. Status of Cymopterus Williamsii (Williams' Springparsley)
Status of Cymopterus williamsii (Williams’ springparsley), north-central Wyoming Prepared for Bureau of Land Management Worland Field Office and Wyoming State Office by Joy Handley Wyoming Natural Diversity Database Dept. 3381,University of Wyoming Laramie, WY 82071 January 2016 BLM Cooperative Agreement No. L12AC20036 Supplement 4 ABSTRACT Cymopterus williamsii (Williams’ springparsley), a Wyoming endemic, was surveyed for detailed information about known occurrences and to locate possible new occurrences. A potential distribution model and aerial photointerpretation of habitat were used to identify areas for new surveys. Specific location, population distribution, and habitat data were collected for two occurrences that were only known from specimen collections, while more extensive mapping and data were gathered for two other known populations. Three new occurrences were found, providing some verification for the potential distribution model. Species information, status assessment, and management recommendations are provided based on prior knowledge, current and future land uses, and new understanding gained from these surveys. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Collections and taxonomic work by Ronald Hartman of the Rocky Mountain Herbarium (RM) remains central to understanding current taxonomy and status. It has been misidentified as three different species, L. congdonii, L. engelmannii, and L. tracyi , but differs from all of them and is described here as Lomatium kogholiin i Mason & Willie, sp. nov. , the Wailaki Lomatium . When reviewing Lomatium for the Flora of North America project (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 1993-ongoing), we were struck by a series of specimens identified as L. congdonii J.M. Coulter & Rose reported from Red Mountain, Mendocino Co., California (Constance & Weatherwax 2017). This location is far from the known range of L. congdonii, which grows on ultramafic soils in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Lomatium seeds are not well adapted to long-distance dispersal (Marisco & Hellman 2009), so the plants from Red Mountain were unlikely to be L. -

We compared the morphological traits of plants from different populations and habitats. The overall pattern showed that the smallest plants, with low fruit number, are found on Èaven (locus classicus or type locality); the largest individuals, with high fruit number, grow in the Golobnica gorge. As judged by plant size and seed set, the optimal habitats are screes. We used RAPD mark- ers to estimate genetic variation between and within populations, as well as between and within the northern and the southern parts of the distribution area. Hladnikia showed only a low level of RAPD variability. AMOVA parti- tioned the majority of genetic diversity within selected populations. The low genetic differentiation between popu- lations and their genetic depauperation indicates survival in situ, since the Trnovski gozd plateau most likely was a nunatak region in the southern Prealps during Pleistocene glaciations. Later range expansion of extant popula- tions was limited by poor seed dispersal. -

Mansfi eld Department of Biology, Th e College of Idaho Caldwell, Idaho 83605 nyone who has ever tried to identify a biscuitroot or desertparsley (Lomatium) Aor springparsley (Cymopterus) can ap- preciate how variable these plants can be. As a consequence of my fl oristic study of southeast- ern Oregon, most recently the Owyhee region, I often encounter unusual forms of plants. Sometimes these forms are just minor variations within the range of what might be expected for a given species, and other times the variations seem diff erent enough to warrant a closer look. Further investigation may include more fi eld observations, locating additional populations with the unusual characters, careful measure- ments and comparisons of these characters between closely related species, greenhouse or experimental manipulations, or even phyloge- netic analysis of DNA sequence data. At the small liberal arts college where I teach, some of these aberrant populations that “don’t read the books” make for fun research projects for keen undergraduate students. Th at was the case in the mid-2000s when I suggested to my student, Kim Carlson, that she make some measurements on specimens of three species of Lomatium from southeastern Oregon and southwestern Idaho. Flowers in these “apioids” (Apiaceae, the carrot and parsley family) are small and rather nondescript white, yellow, or sometimes purplish, reddish, or brownish- green.
