The World of Joseph Fielding: Chapter 33 Mary Fielding Smith Warned Not to Travel in 1848 The pioneers of 1848 began to gather at the Elk Horn outfitting station toward the end of May, moving their wagons across the swollen Elkhorn River on ferries and setting up camps on the west side while waiting for the rest of the company to arrive. President Young visited the camp several times on horseback, finally bringing his family members and wagons on the 30th of May. On the morning of May 31st, the river had risen three feet from the previous day as the winter snows melted. Men worked hard the next week ferrying wagons from the east bank to the west bank and encouraging the cattle to swim across. The account of Mary being chastised by Cornelius Lott is legendary in the LDS Church. Joseph Fielding does not mention the incident at all in his Pioneers moving west in 1848 crossed the Elkhorn journal. The bulk of the information comes from the River and camped, waiting for their companies. memory of Mary’s son, who was nine years old at the time. Young Joseph F. stated that he was present when Captain Lott approached Mary at the outfitting station.1 Joseph F. remembered that it had taken his mother and Uncle Fielding’s families three days to travel from Winter Quarters to the outfitting station.2 After arriving and possibly traveling a day to Elder Kimball’s camp, they were approached by Elder Kimball and Captain Lott, the latter appearing to have been supervising the cattle belonging to the second company.3 Joseph F. -

James Cropper, John Philip and the Researches in South Africa
JAMES CROPPER, JOHN PHILIP AND THE RESEARCHES IN SOUTH AFRICA ROBERT ROSS IN 1835 James Cropper, a prosperous Quaker merchant living in Liverpool and one of the leading British abolitionists, wrote to Dr John Philip, the Superintendent of the London Missionary Society in South Africa, offering to finance the republication of the latter's book, Researches in South Africa, which had been issued seven years earlier. This offer was turned down. This exchange was recorded by William Miller Macmillan in his first major historical work, The Cape Coloured Question,1 which was prirnarily concerned with the struggles of Dr John Philip on behalf of the so-called 'Cape Coloureds'. These resulted in Ordinance 50 of 1828 and its confirmation in London, which lifted any civil disabilities for free people of colour. The correspondence on which it was based, in John Philip's private papers, was destroyed in the 1931 fire in the Gubbins library, Johannesburg, and I have not been able to locate any copies at Cropper's end. Any explanation as to why these letters were written must therefore remain speculative. Nevertheless, even were the correspondence extant, it is unlikely that it would contain a satisfactory explanation of what at first sight might seem a rather curious exchange. The two men had enough in common with each other, and knew each other's minds well enough, for them merely to give their surface motivation, and not to be concerned with deeper ideological justification. And the former level can be reconstructed fairly easily. Cropper, it may be assumed, saw South Africa as a 'warning for the West Indies', which was especially timely in 1835 as the British Caribbean was having to adjust to the emancipation of its slaves.2 The Researches gave many examples of how the nominally free could still be maintained in effective servitude, and Cropper undoubtedly hoped that this pattern would not be repeated. -

Article The Other Side of the Story: Attempts by Missionaries to Facilitate Landownership by Africans during the Colonial Era R. Simangaliso Kumalo https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2098-3281 University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article provides a critique of the role played by progressive missionaries in securing land for the African people in some selected mission stations in South Africa. It argues that, in spite of the dominant narrative that the missionaries played a role in the dispossession of the African people of their land, there are those who refused to participate in the dispossession. Instead, they used their status, colour and privilege to subvert the policy of land dispossession. It critically examines the work done by four progressive missionaries from different denominations in their attempt to subvert the laws of land dispossession by facilitating land ownership for Africans. The article interacts with the work of Revs John Philip (LMS), James Allison (Methodist), William Wilcox and John Langalibalele Dube (American Zulu Mission [AZM]), who devised land redistributive mechanisms as part of their mission strategies to benefit the disenfranchised Africans. Carter, Heart Throbs of the West, Vol. 7, pp. 374–378. It was in New York that John Pack first became acquainted with the elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the fall of 1833 he outfitted his parents who had already joined the Church and sent them to Kirtland, Ohio. On the eighth of March, 1836 he and his wife were baptized into the Church by James Blakesley. In the early springtime of 1837, he disposed of his farm at Houns-field, and in April of the same year he and his wife moved to Kirtland, Ohio. He purchased a farm on the Chagrin River, not far from Kirtland. At this place he also began the construction of a saw mill, thus fulfilling a desire which he is thought to have entertained from his early youth at Saint John and possibly at Wattertown. In common with other members of the Church, John Pack was not to remain long in Kirtland. In the spring- time of 1838, under pressure of mob violence, he sold his farm at a great loss, and, with his family, including his parents, traveled by team to Missouri, a distance in excess of five hundred miles. They first went to the Far West, then to Adam-ondi-Ahman, and finally to the Grand River, where a farm of one hundred sixty acres was purchased, twenty miles from Far West and thirteen miles from Adam-ondi-Ahman. -

Ab&-act This thesis focuses on a group of British evangelical missionaries who proselytised under the auspices of the London Missionary Society (LMS) in early nineteenth- century southern Africa. These missionaries employed the written word in a number of ways during their colonial careers . Considering their texts within the broader frameworks of the colonising, "civilising" and evangelising movements can illuminate the impact of imperial and settler expansion during this era. -
