FOREIGN INFLUENCES ON AND INNOVATION IN ENGLISH TOMB SCULPTURE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY by Nicola Jane Shilliam B.A. (Warwick) Ph.D. dissertation Warwick University History of Art September 1986 SUMMARY This study is an investigation of stylistic and iconographic innovation in English tomb sculpture from the accession of King Henry VIII through the first half of the sixteenth century, a period during which Tudor society and Tudor art were in transition as a result of greater interaction with continental Europe. The form of the tomb was moulded by contemporary cultural, temporal and spiritual innovations, as well as by the force of artistic personalities and the directives of patrons. Conversely, tomb sculpture is an inherently conservative art, and old traditions and practices were resistant to innovation. The early chapters examine different means of change as illustrated by a particular group of tombs. The most direct innovations were introduced by the royal tombs by Pietro Torrigiano in Westminster Abbey. The function of Italian merchants in England as intermediaries between Italian artists and English patrons is considered. Italian artists also introduced terracotta to England.

This was very much a solitary journey. There were few pilgrims on the road, perhaps a dozen or so initially, increasing to about 30 by the time I got to Galicia. On my first night, at St Jean-Pied-de-Port, I shared the albergue with an Englishman, a South American, 2 Italians, 2 Koreans, as well as 6 Australians from Darwin. Along the way I continued to meet numerous Italians and many Koreans. But I also met more Australians at various points along the way, Jill (from Victoria) whom I had arranged to meet in Burgos before I left, being one. With so few pilgrims on the road I often walked for days on end without meeting anyone. With six weeks to complete the journey from St Jean to Santiago I could take my time, though my days were governed by what accommodation was avail- able. Being winter, many places were closed and often there was no choice as to where I could stay. I was blessed with a couple of weeks of mostly fine weather initially, though it was still very cold. The path was often frozen, making it easy to walk on the mud! A couple of months later and I suspect it would be a differ- ent story. Galicia though turned on the tap! Here the water just poured out of the hillsides.

    French police suspect arson was cause of fire at Nantes cathedral NANTES, France (CNS) — French police have opened an arson investigation into a fire at a Gothic cathedral in Nantes. The blaze broke out in three places in the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul July 18. Although more than 100 firefighters contained the blaze within two hours and stopped it from spreading to the main body of the church, a 17th-century choir organ at the west end of the building was destroyed with much of the choir area and multiple stained-glass windows. The mayor of Nantes immediately announced a criminal investigation into the fire because it appeared to have started at multiple locations. A volunteer at the cathedral was questioned and released by police. The cathedral in Nantes is considered to be a jewel of French architecture. It was begun in 1434 and completed only in 1891. The French government has designated it as a historic monument because of its architectural significance. The blaze was the second at the cathedral in less than 50 years. In 1972, a fire destroyed so much of its roof that it took 13 years before repairs were completed and it could reopen to the public once more. Laurent Ferlay, the regional fire chief, told French media that the damage to Nantes cathedral was not as grave as that caused by the previous fire nor comparable to damage caused by the fire at Notre Dame in Paris in April 2019. French Catholic leaders announced their shock and sadness via social media soon after the fire broke out.

Emmanuel Abayisenga, 40, a Catholic immigrant from Rwanda, had been released on bail earlier this year for the July 2020 arson at Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral in Nantes. The blaze engulfed the inside of the fifteenth-century cathedral, destroying a grand organ, stained-glass windows and a painting. Fr Olivier Maire, 60, the French provincial of the Montfort Missionaries, had offered him housing in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, south of Nantes while he waited for his court appearance. Police sources said early indications were that Fr Maire had been beaten to death. La Roche-sur-Yon prosecutor Yannick Le Goater told reporters police had found the body of Fr Maire in a room to which the suspect had given them the key. “At this stage of the investigation there seems to be no terrorist motive whatsoever,” Le Goater said. On 25 July 2020, Abayisenga admitted lighting two fires in the area of a seventeenth-century organ and a third above an electrical panel in the Cathedral of Sts Peter and Paul a week earlier. He had been volunteering at the cathedral as a warden and had the keys to the building because he was responsible for locking it up on the day of the fire.

    Disaster Management and Human Health Risk VI 51 THE FIRE OF NOTRE DAME: ECONOMIC LESSONS LEARNED WADAD KATHY TANNOUS School of Business, Western Sydney University, Australia ABSTRACT On the 14th April 2019, a major fire damaged Notre-Dame Cathedral in France. The damage was estimated to the value of billions of dollars in terms of lost art and built material. This study aims to assess the impact of this event and its predictability and potential preventability. The study uses primary data from surveys of response agencies, response personnel, structural engineers, fire engineers, insurance assessors, and heritage specialists. The study examines the economic cost of the fire in the immediacy of the incident, the short term and the long term. In addition, the environmental impact of the fire incident is examined. This includes the internal environment of the church, the chemicals that may be used in the restoration, the chemicals that may be released into the general environment and what they mean for response agency personnel and the impact on their health. The economic impact of the fire of Notre Dame is significant and will be long lasting on the residents in the immediate surroundings and wider vicinity of the church; the response workers; and on the country. Our findings provide lessons for assessing the costs to implementing preventive measures and improving fire preparation for older style buildings. In particular, measuring the economic costs of iconic buildings, such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, whose damage or destruction are horrific for the short and long term.
