GENDER EQUALITY OUTREACH OFFICER

BACKGROUND

The International Youth Internship Program offers Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience through international development work. College of the Rockies, Bow Valley College and are providing opportunities to 28 young Canadians a year between 2018 and 2020 to support sustainable international development initiatives with partners in Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean. The program, which is funded by Global Affairs , is part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

This internship is being hosted by the Flaviana Matata Foundation (FMF). The Flaviana Matata Foundation was established in 2011 and offers a variety of programming and activities to ensure that girls and young women receive the education and training they need in order to take advantage of economic and lifelong learning opportunities. FMF’s vision is to create “a world where girls can stay in school and grow up to become leaders who are confident, economically independent, and supportive of their communities.” The Flaviana Matata Foundation and College of the Rockies have worked together for over a year to collaborate and share knowledge and experience relating to gender equality in Tanzania.

The objective of the Gender Equality Outreach Officer will be to build on the activities implemented by FMF to support the ability of women to contribute to the national, regional, and local economies through training programs and awareness raising activities. The interns will support FMF staff to provide life skills and entrepreneurship training to young women as well as raise awareness about important gender equality challenges such as feminine hygiene. The ultimate objective will be the empowerment of female youth through gainful employment as a result of the training and education they have received.

The Gender Equality Officers will work together and/or independently with FMF staff to:

 Conduct research and analysis on gender equity issues at the local, regional, and national levels through a literature review, outreach with gender equality specialists, NGOs based in Dar es Salaam

and through quantitative and qualitative methods  Support FMF staff in the grant-writing process including: searching for funding opportunities, writing project proposals, preparing submissions to various organizations both local and international that provide financial support for projects in line with FMF’s mission  Document the impact of FMF’s female entrepreneurship training program through collecting successful student testimonials (video, photos, stories)  Conduct monitoring and evaluation activities of FMF’s female entrepreneurship training program through the use of a variety of research techniques to gather information from current students and graduates of the program  Contribute to building the skills and confidence of young women to succeed in the workforce through the development and delivery of business skills (sales, marketing, accounting etc.) workshops to be delivered as part of FMF’s female entrepreneurship training program  Assist with raising awareness about feminine hygiene issues through a collaboration with Lavy Products that would include delivering workshops and distributing sanitary pads in local and rural communities  Support FMF’s social media efforts (website, Facebook, Instagram etc) to raise awareness about the education programming they deliver and support  Raise awareness of gender inequality issues at the community and local level through presentations and events  Conclude internship with a report on findings and recommendations for subsequent Gender Equality Officers

ELIGIBILITY

 Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada between 19 and 30 years of age  Graduate of a diploma or degree program (as of the start date of the internship)  Have not previously participated in the International Youth Internship Program  College of the Rockies encourages applicants of all genders to apply for this position

QUALIFICATIONS

 A diploma or degree that focuses on or features elements related to research methods, gender studies, marketing, business, international development, or other relevant matters  An appreciation for and commitment to contribute to the mission of Flaviana Matata Foundation  Strong communication, writing, research and problem solving skills  Proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint  An open mind, a desire to learn and to contribute to learning, and the ability to get along with others, particularly in situations outside the applicant’s comfort zone  The ability to adapt to challenging circumstances and work with limited resources

Other qualifications that might contribute to a successful internship are:

 Volunteer or work experience with women’s or girls’ organizations  Experience leading workshops/trainings in entrepreneurship/leadership/life skills etc

 Volunteer or work experience with multiple stakeholder groups  Previous overseas experience in a developing country  Experience in resource mobilization / fundraising / grant writing

In addition, interns will be required to do the following:

 Comply with College of the Rockies’ risk management plan and emergency protocols  Conduct themselves in an ethical manner, respect local customs, and comply with Canadian and Tanzanian law  Participate in, and be present during, all aspects of the program, including: - Online preparation assignments - Pre-departure training and related activities in Cranbrook, BC - Reintegration and public communications activities in Cranbrook, BC

FINANCES

College of the Rockies will assist with arranging accommodation abroad and provide a modest monthly living stipend ($1500/month) to interns overseas. The College will also contribute to health insurance and vaccination expenses and cover full travel and visa costs to overseas placements. In addition, the College will contribute to travel to and accommodation in Cranbrook (for interns residing outside of Cranbrook) for pre-departure and reintegration activities.
