The opinions expressed in this report do not necessarily reflect the positions or policies of NIB or U.S. Department of Education. ii PREFACE The National Commission on Environmental Education Research (NCEER)was established in 1980 as a result of initiatives taken by A. Clay Schoenfeld, professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsiff-Madison while serving as President of the National Association for Environmental Education (NAEE). Professor Schoenfeld perceived the need for researchers in the field of Environmental Education (EE) to gather and examine the rapidly growing body of EE research conductedover the past decade or so, to organize and synthesize that body of Ltiormation) and to make suggestions and recommendations to help guide future research. The creation of the NCEER was Professor Schoenfeld'sresponse to that need. I have been privileged to serve as chairman of the NCEER sinde shortly after its inception in 1980; Dr. Lei Lane Burrus7Bammel of West Virginia University was the initial chair. The NCEER is now a "standing committee" of the NAEE responsible for "research and evaluation" activities of the Association (now known as the North American Association for Environmental Education). Over the past four years, the NCEER has been actively involved in carrying out the tasks assigned by Professor Schoenfeld. The first product generated by the'NCEER was Research in Environmental Education, 1971-1980, a volume of 429 abstracts of EE research conducted between 1971 and 1980. The abstracts were developed from research documents found in professional journals, do9toral dissertations, and fugitive literhtureas reported through the ERIC system. To our knowledge, Research in Environmental EducAtin1911:119, is the most comprehensive and most up-to-date , document of its kind available. With the publication of that volume, Phase I of the NCEER's work was complIted. Almost immediately upon complet on of Research in Environmental Education\ 1971-1980, the NCEER began work ng on Phase II of the project- asynthesi\ of EE research and recommendati ns for further research. The commission$ very early in Phase II of the p oject, decided to include two additional years of research studies (19811 and 1982) in an attempt to make the second , phase of'its work as current a possible. Hence, this - the second volume completed by the NCEER - inclu es studies conducted between 1971 and 1982, a period of twelve yews. I The NCEER adapted the framework for Environmental Education curriculum and planning proposed by Hungerford, Peyton, and Wilkeltoserve as a structure for grouping the research studies into meaningful sections and then intoa coheren "whole."As a result, this volume is divided into five chapters which correspond to the Hungerford, et al., schema (chapter 2-6) andtwo additional chapters (chapters 1and 7) which the commission felt were necessary to present the complete "story". 11 11110.111. 1Hungerford, Harold R.,R. Hence, the reader should not be surprised tosee the same study mentioned, or cited, in several chapters of thisbook. In these canes, however, different aspects of the same studiesare discussed in different contexts- depending on the focus of the chapter. Although each chapter was written bya different author or team of authors, I was solely responsible for editing the work'of all contributors. In some cases editing was minor and in other cases it wasmore extensive. Hopefully I did not distort too much what the variousauthors intended to say. In any case, as editor I take full responsibility forany errors; omissions, or distortions thatmay appear in this volume. As with any task requiring so long to complete,many people deserve thanks and acknowledgement. In this dissertation, I seek to shine more light on arc processes by inferring the lower crustal mineralogy of an ancient arc by geochemical and structural modelling of its exposed levels. Arcs characteristically have high concentrations of incompatible elements, thus I also experimentally assess the ability of alkaline melts and fluids associated with sediment melting to carry lithophile and chalcophile elements in the sub- arc.

In addition to meeting their new peers and finding their way around the school on the famous Absence Request Form ‘treasure trail’, they heard inspiring words from Mr Walters, the Head of Year 7, and from Mr Burton, who coordinates the school’s co-curricular programme.
