A unique event and a once in a life-time opportunity; this is a play of life and death that first began in 1633. The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began when the villagers vowed that if God spared them from the plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus. 2020 will be the 42nd year of the Passion Play when you can enjoy what is now the world’s largest amateur dramatic performance. More than 2,000 villagers will enact the story of Christ on the impressive open- air stage of the Passion Play Theatre in Oberammergau. The performance is brought to life in front of your eyes through actors, a choir and an orchestra. The village expects around 500,000 visitors from all around the world, half of which will be international guests. The play is delivered in German and you will be supplied with a translation booklet to help better understand what you’ll be seeing. The spectacular play will unfold before your eyes within the setting of a stage that was first erected in 1930 and has seen little alteration since. The play will continue through 5 acts before a 3 hour interval that begins at 5.00pm and the play reconvenes at 8.00pm. At this point you will be transferred by coach to a nearby restaurant to enjoy a 3 course meal (included), whilst you digest the first half of the Passion Play. You’ll be whisked back to the theatre in good time to enjoy the second half of the play that concludes at 10.30pm. You will then be transferred back to your hotel by coach.
