Oberammergau, Passion Play DIRECT from the Channel Islands Oberammergau, Passion Play DIRECT from the Channel Islands Saturday 25th July to Tuesday 28th July 2020 4 days / 3 nights, fully escorted tour Day 1: Channel Islands to Memmingen, Germany Travellers from Jersey will depart on Saturday 25th July, with their Tour Manager, on a convenient 09:00 flight and will travel to Guernsey where they will stay on the plane. Guernsey travellers will board the flight and depart at 09:40 direct to Memmingen, Germany. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel in Bad Kohlgrub, close to Oberammergau. After check in, you will have dinner in the hotel (included) and then have the evening at leisure to enjoy your new Bavarian surroundings. Bad Kohlgrub is a wonderful small town village approximately 15 minutes’ drive from Oberammergau that offers hiking, culture and gastronomy. Beautiful views are at the heart of this provincial region surrounded by mountains and wooden houses. All hotels are subject to change and won’t be confirmed pre-departure information. All hotels will be of a 4* standard. Days 2: Oberammergau and the Passion Play Enjoy breakfast in your hotel before being taken on a guided tour of Oberammergau. The tour will give you a true sense of a typical Bavarian Alpine village. You’ll get the opportunity to be introduced to the history of the Passion Play and visit the small local heritage museum 01534 496687 | bontour.co.uk Version 2, 5th February 2020 where you will also learn about typical Bavarian painting that adorn the town. This tour is on foot. After the morning tour you will have time at leisure in the village and for lunch before the Passion Play begins at 2.30pm. Oberammergau is famous for wood carvings so why not go and pick up a small memento of your visit to take home with you! A unique event and a once in a life-time opportunity; this is a play of life and death that first began in 1633. The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began when the villagers vowed that if God spared them from the plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus. 2020 will be the 42nd year of the Passion Play when you can enjoy what is now the world’s largest amateur dramatic performance. More than 2,000 villagers will enact the story of Christ on the impressive open- air stage of the Passion Play Theatre in Oberammergau. The performance is brought to life in front of your eyes through actors, a choir and an orchestra. The village expects around 500,000 visitors from all around the world, half of which will be international guests. The play is delivered in German and you will be supplied with a translation booklet to help better understand what you’ll be seeing. The spectacular play will unfold before your eyes within the setting of a stage that was first erected in 1930 and has seen little alteration since. The play will continue through 5 acts before a 3 hour interval that begins at 5.00pm and the play reconvenes at 8.00pm. At this point you will be transferred by coach to a nearby restaurant to enjoy a 3 course meal (included), whilst you digest the first half of the Passion Play. You’ll be whisked back to the theatre in good time to enjoy the second half of the play that concludes at 10.30pm. You will then be transferred back to your hotel by coach. Day 3: Kempten and the heart of Bavaria Enjoy breakfast in your hotel before checking-out and being transferred by coach to Kempten, a typical Bavarian town 1 hour from Bad Kohlgrub. The name of your 4* hotel will be confirmed in pre-departure information. Kempten is a beautiful end to your Bavarian experience: one of the oldest towns in Germany and a tourist resort at the foot of the Alps in Allgäu. This stunning market town will be your viewing terrace in a fairy-tale area and you can enjoy its steep mountain views, rolling hills, colourful flower meadows and pretty architecture typical of the region. This day will be at leisure to enjoy a slice of Bavarian life at your own pace maybe accompanied by a slice of Prinzregententorte, a traditional layered Bavarian cake. 01534 496687 | bontour.co.uk Version 2, 5th February 2020 Should you wish to explore the region further, in early 2020 we will have for you optional excursions that can be enjoyed on Day 3 and they can be added to your itinerary at an additional cost. This evening dinner in your hotel is included and you will have your evening at leisure. Day 4: Memmingen to the Channel Islands Enjoy breakfast in your hotel before being transferred back to Memmingen (approx. 30 minute transfer) for your return flight to Jersey, via Guernsey. Your flight will depart at 17:30 from Memmingen and arrive in Guernsey at 18:55. All travellers will disembark the plane and Jersey passengers will need to clear passport control, before continuing to its final destination, arriving at 19:45. Please note: • The currency in Germany is the Euro. • Please bring suitable clothing and keep hydrated. The temperature in Oberammergau is, on average in July, a pleasant 21° although the evenings can be cooler with the mountain air. • We advise you should be able to walk for up to one hour at a leisurely pace to be able to enjoy this tour to the full. There may be some steady inclines / declines. • We strongly recommend that you have a valid insurance policy in place. C. I. Travel Group is working in partnership with Cherry Godfrey. This small town is famous for its high number of mural paintings on houses, for its traditional procession staging the Passion of Christ in the streets, for hosting a NATO school. This municipality is crossed by the Alpenstrasse , an O enchanting route 500 km long across the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. The town is also known for the skill of its wood sculptors. Oberammergau is famous for its “ Lüftlmalerei” or frescoes . The subjects of these frescoes follow the Bavarian religious tradition, of its fables and tromp l’oeil figures intended to puzzle the viewer. The practice of the Lüftlmalerei is typical of Bavaria and its name derives from a house in Oberammergau called Zum Lüftl which was the residence of a famous and much appreciated painter of façades called Franz Seraph Zwinck. 1 2 Oberammergau—Garmisch-Partenkirche 3 We leave the curious town walking along the Eugen Papst Strasse to reach the bridge by which we cross the river Ammer .
