STRESZCZENIE Celem tego artykułu jest odpowiedź na kilka pytań: (1) jakie ślady materialnego dzie- dzictwa kulturowego Aromanów (Wlachów) odnajdujemy na terenach dzisiejszej Albanii, Grecji i Republiki Macedonii; (2) co mówią one o społeczności lokalnej, jej historii i znacze- niu w kulturze europejskiej; (3) czy istnieje współcześnie aromańska pamięć zbiorowa do- tycząca miejsc, w których zachowały się ślady tego dziedzictwa? W tekście dokonano opi- su regionów, które zamieszkiwali Aromanie, zaprezentowano wstępne kryteria podzia- łu ich dziedzictwa kulturowego na grupy, przypisując im wybrane przykłady zabytków, a także wskazano, jakie wybrane znaczenia i sensy związane z kulturą aromańską odkry- wamy, traktując owe zabytki jako tekst kultury. W artykule wykorzystano jakościowe metody badań terenowych, w tym wywiady i obserwacje związane ze śladami tego dziedzictwa w wybranych miejscowościach Grecji, Albanii i Republiki Macedonii, wraz z wykonaniem dokumentacji fotograficznej. Badaniu poddano także źródła zastane (historyczne i etnograficzne) oraz zasoby dostępne w Inter- necie – przeanalizowano narracje dotyczące odpowiednich zabytków w źródłach etnogra- ficznych (dawnych i współczesnych wspomnieniach Aromanów) znajdujące się w nowych mediach, w tym na blogach i portalach internetowych. W analizie posłużono się paradyg- matem historyczno-porównawczym i interpretatywnym, co pozwalało na badanie ukry- tych znaczeń i kodów kulturowych związanych z dziedzictwem aromańskim. Badania pokazały, że na terenie Bałkanów zachowały się liczne artefakty dziedzictwa kulturowego Aromanów, z którymi związane są rozmaite sensy i znaczenia (m.in. organi- zacja przestrzeni, przestrzenie realne i mityczne, wielokulturowość i konflikt). 1 J. InTroduction Who were, or rather who are Aromanians? Where do they come from? What is their history and what were the directions of their migration? How long did they live in their original areas and then in the areas they subse- quently inhabited? Although these questions have been asked for years, to this day no researcher has managed to provide exhaustive answers. What is more, the existing scientific findings concerning the Aromanian issue, which largely reflect the national aspirations of different Balkan peoples, are already mostly outdated and in many aspects simply untrue. Blank pages in historical and ethnographic sources about Aromanians, their dif- ficult history, and the common practice of erasing and/or appropriating their heritage by majority communities, all indicate that the phenome- non of this vanishing ethnos requires appropriately impartial and inde- pendent research that would lead to reliable answers to the above-men- tioned fundamental questions. These questions concern issues, which are extremely topical in today’s united Europe – Europe that is seeking its common heritage and rediscovering traditions that have almost sunk into oblivion. The domains which have not yet been thoroughly explored by resear- chers include the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Aroma- nian minority inhabiting European territories. Although information abo- ut sites being part of this heritage has been emerging in European studies since the beginning of the 20th century, we still lack a general, comparative and interdisciplinary perspective on the issue. In the meantime, we should first ask ourselves the following question: has the formerly strong Aroma- nian ethnos – once scattered throughout many European countries by hi- story, divided into distinct social groups, performing a variety of profes- sions, and undergoing the varying degrees of integration and assimilation with the majority communities with which it lived – left any artifacts that could now be regarded as its cultural heritage? If so, what kind of traces of the Aromanian cultural heritage can be found in Europe of today (ty- pes, dating, function, symbolism) and what do they tell us about the local community and its history, and significance in European culture? Is there today any Aromanian collective memory of these artifacts? Are they a fac- tor which contributes to integration in any way? Can we use them to draw Artifacts of the PAsT As Traces of MeMory. THe Aromanian CulTurAl Heritage... 161 conclusions about the specific features of Aromanian culture and its tangi- ble and intangible heritage, and what conclusions could there be? Searching for the traces of the Aromanian cultural heritage in contem- porary Europe is not an easy task. It is worth noting that at the current sta- ge of research, it is impossible to provide a comprehensive description of the problem of the said heritage, because there are no exhaustive histori- cal and ethnographic sources that could fill the numerous gaps in this re- search area. What makes it even more challenging is the fact that the to- pic has to be explored contextually, i.e. we need to factor in different per- spectives, including, first and foremost, the point of view of Aromanians themselves – those who admit to belong to this minority today as well as those who have lost the memory of their roots – but also consider the way the Aromanian heritage functions in the memory of aliens, including scien- tific outlooks on the problem. Furthermore, it is necessary to discover re- gularities that govern the Vlach heritage, taking into account monuments which have survived to this day as well as monuments which only live in our memory. As I have already indicated, it will require broad interdisci- plinary studies2. My research work is guided by the conviction that the tangible evi- dence of the Aromanian cultural heritage constitutes the text of culture which can be read on many levels. What is particularly important to me is exploring the discourses associated with this heritage, which are found among Aromanians themselves and also among the majority communities inhabiting the areas where the relevant monuments are located. We also touch upon the question of the real and imagined identity, as well as of the relationship between the tangible heritage site and its associated intan- gible sphere: beliefs, customs, rituals, religious cult, ancient professions, mythology, and specific local stories that comprise the so-called cultural 2 The difficulties of historical and cultural studies in the Balkans have been written about by i.e.: N. I am aware that researching the cultural heritage of Aromanians is all the more difficult due to the fact that their culture was not literate for a long time (although it has preserved old tangible artifacts) and was mar- ked by a significant predominance of oral transmission, resulting in a scar- ce number of surviving written sources from the past centuries. Therefore, my attempt is to reconstruct that culture based on the fragments of histori- cal and ethnographic records, and complement it with the available recol- lections of Aromanians – the recollections which are part of their collective memory. I repeat: I consider a cultural heritage site to be the text of cultu- re and also the starting point for reading Aromanian culture, which exists primarily in the world of oral history. I realize that similar attempts doom the description of the researched cultural reality to a certain kind of sub- jectivity and, moreover, that the elements researchers regard as part of the heritage they study are often arbitrary and have no confirmation among the community involved. Moreover, that community itself is not always interested in preserving the memory of their own tradition. All this, howe- ver, is typical of reconstructing the cultural heritage, the dominant feature of which is orality and lack of written sources. On the other hand, I belie- ve

Abstract Among the five major basilicas built in Voskopoje over a period of 60 years (1699-1759), the church of St. Nicholas is known as one of the most magnificent buildings of this style. With its construction it is opened the series of three basilicas which were built within four years (St. Nicholas -1721, - 1722 St. Michael and St. Thanas-1724). The church was the main church (temple) of St Nicholas neighborhood. According to its ktitoric inscription, the church was built mainly by the Arcond Haji Jorgji Hira’s costs within a period of 17 months from June 1721 to September 1722. Decoration with frescoes of the basilica of St. Nicholas in Voskopoja has always attracted the attention of researchers in the field, not only for the manner of artistic conception and implementation, but also for the spirit and content that brings the program used by the headmaster “...the most knowledgable David”231. Together with two of his aides Constantine and Kriston, the headmaster David Selenica had a large volume of work for the decorations on multiple surfaces in St. Koll, work which lasted about four years (1722-1726)232. Iconographic program used in such an environment, not only consumed the painter’s manual, but also every sketch, or etching template233 thus creating the necessity of a "real encyclopedia" scenes.

Antiquity Figurative arts in the Albanian land date back to an- tiquity. The first findings are from the Neolithic Period. Through numerous archaeological discoveries in various areas of the country hundreds and thousands items of ce- ramics, terra cotta, metallic ornaments, etc., belonging to Illyrian tribes, Albanians’ ancestors, have been found. The earliest artifacts are simple; intended for practical applica- tion, and they also contain artistic values embodied in their zoomorphic styles of vessels and their ornaments, carv- ings and other elements. From the 6th century to the 4th century B.C. lines and geometric figures were drawn in ceramics; the form is constructed with silhouettes of a more elegant shape that comes to be enriched with plastic ele- ments. Many vessels of this period, that are preserved to this day in museums of Albania have genuine distinguish- able autochthonous artistic values not encountered in the art of the “Dea of Butrint” marble sculpture ancient neighboring countries, such as Hellenes, Macedonians or Romans. It’s with these ancient vessels, ornamented with maleable decorations and fractures, that the developments of sculpture in Al- bania begins (see chapter 2.2.Archaeology). More clear-cut features appeared particularly with the formation of Illyrian cities, such as Bylis, Amantia, Phoinike and Buthrot, and also those of Hellenic settle- ments, Durrhachium, Apollonia and Orichum.

    181 ARCHITECTURE 2.12.ARCHITECTURE and Urban Development The architectural heritage of Albania, so ancient in origin and so varying in forms over the centuries, represents an important patrimony of the Albanian people. The early stage of architecture is noted by the prehistoric dwellings (coastal dwelling, pre 5th century B.C.) discovered in Dunavec be- longing to the medium neolithic period and in Maliq belonging to the late neolithic period. These houses were constructed upon a wood floor, and rested upon stakes driven vertically into the ground. The prehistoric dwellings are classified into three groups: 1-Houses totally inserted in the ground (in Cakran); 2-Houses half-inserted in the ground Buleuterion (Agonothetes’ temple), Apollonia, 2nd (in Cakran); 3-Houses, on the ground, with one alcove. century AD The fortified centres seemed to have an architectonical unity, both in terms of land location and in the planimetry solutions. Changing roles from pre- urban shelters into real urban centres, these fortifica- tions developed their architectural shapes and solu- tions as well as construction techniques. These con- structions represent the beginning of antique fortifica- tions. 5th Century B.C. Architecture and urban plan- ing of this period was based on Hellenic achievements, although linked strongly to Illyrian reality as the cities of Dyrrachium and Apollonia passed through pros- perous periods. Apart from these two colonial cities, there were also a number of towns in Southern Illyria such as Bylis, Antigonea Amantia, Dimal, Albanopoli, Lisi and so on. These places were con- structed on the top of the hills and were surrounded by high walls using construction techniques taking into consid- eration the form of the blocs (stone bricks), and the presence of ports and defensive towers with square and round shapes.

This paper deals with the concept of cultural diffusion of the medieval city of Moscopole (XVIII century). The paper analyzes the indicators that highlight the flourishing of the city of Moscopole in the years 1750–1769 and the cultural richness that this nucleus of civilization conveyed to Albanian territories and further in the Balkans. The methodology followed is based on the research method, intertwined with information processing, comparison, and data synthesis analysis. This cultural diffusion and rich historical heritage have turned Moscopole into a model for the development of mountain tourism. Assessing geographical position in the development of Moscopole The geographical position of Moscopole can be considered appropriate for the progress of its inhabitants. Although “the city of Moscopole has been established in a well- hidden place, where you can climb with difficulty” (Peyfuss 1998: 22), it was part of regional and important passageways and beyond. The Adriatic eastern shores flourished in antiquity. Dyrrachium and Apollonia cities were the accessing “gateways” for the interior Balkans.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract St. John the Baptist (the Forerunner) has a very important place in the orthodox tradition, not only because he was the prophet and forerunner of Jesus, but also because just like St. Elijah the Prophet, he was the first monk. Considered as the most venerable saint after the Virgin Mary his cult is firmly established in Eastern Orthodox territories and it is celebrated many times throughout the year, precisely 6 times. In addition, every Tuesday is dedicated to his memory. The existence of one monastery with the name of the Saint in Voskopoja (Albania) demonstrate the honor and respect attributed to St. John. They also demonstrate a particular type of cult in this region. A short cycle filled with episodes of John’s life, which perhaps is implicitly related to this “cult” is part of the iconographic program applied by David of Selenica during the fresco decoration of the Church of St. Nicholas in Voskopoja (1722 – 1726). Inside this church, the life cycle of St. John the Forerunner is located in the third line of paintings of the northern wall, facing the southern gate, which remains the sole functional entrance leading into the temple. This cycle entails these scenes; St. John in front of Herod, St. John in Prison, the Decapitation, and the Banquet. This particular composition in which David follows deliberately the latebyzantine model does not amount to a systematic menologion (calendar cycle).

    David Selenica of Vlora and his painting in the Holy Church of Kukuzeli in the Holy Mountain (1715) AHILINO PALUSHI FACULTY OF HISTORY, DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE ELBASANI STREET, TIRANE, ALBANIA e-mail:[email protected] Abstract David Selenica belongs to a group of painters who in the beginning of the 18th century saw the renaissance of Byzantine painting as inspired by the early period of Paleolog art. David has painted in many well-known churches and monasteries in the southern Balkans. The focus of this paper is on the earliest fresco depicted by David Selenica of Vlora, which can be seen at the Church of St. Mary of Kukuzeli. The Holy Church of Kukuzeli is the second most important church in the Monastery of Great Lavra after the Central Temple (Katholikon). According to the ktitorik writing, the church has been built in 1713, under the supervision of abbot Josif from island Xios. From its kind it belongs to the Athonit style of construction. The small size of the narthex which can be seen inside the church is outweighed by its important role in revealing David’s talent associated with great professionalism, as well as his artistic program. This study is based on different kinds of sources which give us accurate information on, the tradition which has given the Church its name, and its architectural features. We will likewise go through the iconographic program applied by the author by describing particular scenes. In addition, by referring to articles, research materials, and bibliographies prepared by Albanian and foreign authors, as well as on an analysis of the fresco which stands at the center of this research paper, we will endeavor to create the profile of this great master of the post-byzantine painting of the early 18th century.

There are also exhibits (Halls 1-2) of the different periods of Albania’s history including works that predate socialist realism. We continue to the area of Tirana called Blloku (“The Block”), a vibrant upmarket neighborhood filled with cafes, galleries, trendy shops and nightclubs. The Block is the location of former Communist dictator Enver Hoxha’s vila.
