In the very earliest days of the church, the apostles were ready to change when it became clear“ that the radical call of Jesus was equally available to everyone; gentile and Jew, male and female, slave and free. And that same willingness to respond to the ever-changing world prompted the saints of old to travel over sea and land, and inspired missionaries to preach in unknown cultures and languages. The Christian faith has a genius for responding creatively to change. And our world is changing fast at the moment. That has been the case for some time, and Covid sped things up. And, just like our forebears, we need to respond, not out of a concern for church survival, but because it’s who we are and what we do as followers of Jesus. Our response in this diocese to this rapid change is called On the Way. Many of you will have heard about it already. Over the next 10 months every deanery in the diocese will join On the Way in a six month process of dreaming, praying and planning for a fruitful and sustainable future in the face of dramatic change. And it is those two words that we are aiming for; fruitful and sustainable. There are lots of ways for churches to be fruitful and sustainable, and it is best discerned locally, by listening widely to local people, through prayer and in careful planning. On the Way supports exactly that process of dreaming and planning. There is lots more information about On the Way on the diocesan website, including a short video from Bishop Philip and a wide range of resources for your parishes and deaneries. Your Rural Dean will also know more, including about when your deanery will be taking part. At the heart of everything we are doing with On the Way is prayer. If you would like to join the journey - whenever your deanery will be involved - we hold a weekly time of On the Way prayer for everyone seeking the Lord’s call in this time of change and uncertainty. It takes place every Thursday morning on Zoom at 8:30 and you would be very welcome to join us.
