When the news broke of a successful first attempt, it was a sensation. This is the gripping story of three extraordinary people: the world's first person to undergo a female to male transition; the former Spitfire pilot who became Britain's first to transition from male to female; and the daring advanced plastic surgeon who carried out these surgeries in the 1940s. Michael Dillon - previously named Laura - had persuaded the brilliant Sir Harold Gillies, the founding father of plastic surgery, to carry out the female-to-male operation that no surgeon in the world had ever attempted. In this geological detective story, Professor Iain Stewart unearths millions of years of the earth’s history as he searches for the answers. On 28 February 2013, in a quiet residential suburb east of Tampa, Florida, Jeff Bush was asleep in bed when he and his entire bedroom disappeared into an abyss. Terrifyingly, there was no warning and Jeff’s body has never been recovered. He had been swallowed by a sinkhole. In the last few years, terrifying sinkholes have opened up in places as far apart as China and Guatamala. But it is in Florida where the occurrence and the fear of sinkholes is greatest. In this fascinating programme, Professor Iain Stewart travels to Florida to reveal what sinkholes are and why they happen, what this underworld is really like and why some are deadly.
