I believe it is the most comprehensive and accurate you will find anywhere. However, although I have tried to make sure the information presented here is as correct and accurate as possible, some reservation is always necessary. Research is continuously progressing and may lead to new findings. Vitesse! pdf details over 700 racing circuits in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria, and also contains notes on Luxembourg and Switzerland. The American Road Courses pdf-documents lists nearly 160 road courses of past and present in the United States and Canada. These files are the most comprehensive and accurate sources for racing circuits in said countries. My website also lists nearly 5000 dates of motorcycle road races in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland, allowing you to see exactly when many of the motorcycle circuits listed in the Rennen! Races! Vitesse! document were used.

Vitesse! Page 3 Foreword Motorsport essentially consists of three ingredients. First, you need a motor vehicle - which can be anything from a Formula 1 car to a lawn mower, or from a MotoGP motorcycle to a pocket bike. Second, you need a driver or rider to operate the vehicle, and finally, a place to go racing - a circuit. To most people this last ingredient is probably the least interesting. The number of books about famous racing drivers and cars, or great riders and their motorcycles, is far larger than the number of books about racing circuits. However, to me circuits are the most interesting aspect of motorsport, for two main reasons. First is their great diversity: in terms of shape, layout, length, difficulty, fame and many other factors, every circuit is different, and each has its own story to tell. Second, it is fascinating to see just how many circuits there are. Once you start looking, you can find them just about any- where. Finding lost circuits or discovering long-forgotten tracks is one of the most fun aspects of researching racing circuits. When looking for information about racing circuits online, I often found it frustrating that the available sources were not complete, and that they often lacked detail and accuracy. This is one of the reasons why I started my website www.wegcircuits.nl and why I made Rennen! Races! Vitesse! - a downloadable pdf-file that lists racing circuits of past and present in four European countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria.

History The beginning of competition Motoring events began soon after the construction of the first successful gasoline-fueled automobiles. The first organized contest was on April 28, 1887, by the chief editor of Paris publication Le Vélocipède, Monsieur Fossier. It ran 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from Neuilly Bridge to the Bois de Boulogne. It was won by Georges Bouton of the De Dion-Bouton Company, in a car he had constructed with Albert, the Comte de Dion, but as he was the only competitor to show up it is rather difficult to call it a race. Another solo event occurred in 1891 when Auguste Doriot and Louis Rigoulot of Peugeot drove their gasoline-fueled Type 3 Quadricycle in the bicycle race from Paris–Brest–Paris. By the time they reached Brest, the winning cyclist Charles Terront was already back in Paris. In order to publicly prove the reliability and performance of the 'Quadricycle' Armand Peugeot had persuaded the organiser, Pierre Giffard of Le Petit Journal, to use his network of monitors and marshalls to vouchsafe and report the vehicle's performance. The intended distance of 1200 km had never been achieved by a motorised vehicle, it being about three times further than the record set by Leon Serpollet from Paris to Lyon.[1][2] Auto racing 2 Paris–Rouen: the world's first motoring contest On July 23, 1894, the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal organized what is considered to be the world's first motoring competition from Paris to Rouen.

												  Don't They Just Turn Left? Nascar's Heritage Race Tracks and Preserving Stock Car CultureABSTRACT Title of Thesis: DON’T THEY JUST TURN LEFT? NASCAR’S HERITAGE RACE TRACKS AND PRESERVING STOCK CAR CULTURE Degree Candidate: Melissa A. Bleier Thesis directed by: John C. Larson Welch Center for Graduate and Professional Studies Goucher College This thesis examines the hypothesis that early NASCAR race tracks play an important role in the history of the United States and that they need to be evaluated and recognized as such. This thesis also identifies the heritage and traditions which are a part of the collective stock car culture and the ways in which heritage race tracks are the most significant places for this culture. In order to fully understand the cultural contribution of stock car racing, after an introduction to the history of stock car racing, a brief exploration of the formative years of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing follows. This thesis explores the Southern roots of stock car racing and the ways in which NASCAR moved the sport from a Southern regional pastime to a national sport. It also examines the people and traditions that come together at a culturally significant space, the race track, and why preserving these race tracks is essential for stock car culture to thrive. These heritage race tracks are the pivotal element for NASCAR’s cultural continuity and provide excellent examples for future preservation efforts focusing on the heritage of stock car racing outside of NASCAR. The research for this thesis examined three tracks within the larger framework of the development of stock car racing. Martinsville Speedway, in Martinsville, Virginia; Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina, and Rockingham Speedway in Rockingham, North Carolina represent the best preservation opportunities for heritage race tracks and were chosen for their close connection to NASCAR’s heritage.
