capacity crowd of approximately 350 people from across the U S The conference featured a number of significant thinkers and conservative voices, including Dr Ben Carson, Lynne Cheney, Star Parker, Steve Moore (Chief Economist for the Heritage Foundation), The Rev Robert Sirico (Acton Institute), Frank Gaffney (Center for Security Policy), and many others The 2014 conference also featured a special performance by Americas Most Patriotic Rock Band, Madison Rising Those who attended were educated on the five core principles (lower taxes, limited government, individual rights and responsibilities, free market capitalism and a strong national defense) and were inspired to return home to their communities all across America and get involved in issues of importance to their communities, their states and our nation Portions of our Freedom Conference were televised by C-Span Videos of all speakers may be viewed at www steamboatinstitute org In addition to its signature event, the annual Freedom Conference, the Steamboat Institute also sponsors a popular Speaker Series throughout the year This series features nationally recognized experts on the hot-button issues of the day, including tax and fiscal policy, healthcare, foreign policy/national defense, freedom, free market capitalism and other issues In 2014, the Steamboat Institute moved these events to a much larger facility the Strings Music Pavilion in Steamboat Springs and offered free to the public In this way, the Steamboat Institute is continuing its educational mission year-round and is building on its growing reputation as a leader in advancing the founding principles of the United States of America Our 2014 Speaker Series included Lt Jason Redman (retired Navy SEAL and author), Michael Barone, Coloradans for Responsible Energy Development (a very informative presentation on fracking), Pastor Rafael Cruz, U S Senator Cory Gardner and others Our Speaker Series is a critical piece of developing and educating the army of citizen activists who attend School Board meetings, volunteer as Community Representatives on the local newspaper editorial board, write letters to the editor and step up to leadership roles in local and state politics Beginning in 2015, we will be expanding the reach of our Speaker Series by co-hosting events at CU-Boulder and other locations throughout Colorado, Wyoming and beyond Awarding inaugural Tony Blankley Fellowship Following two years of fundraising, we awarded our inaugural Tony Blankley Chair for Public Policy and American Exceptionalism to Tom Rogan, a columnist for both National Review and The Daily Telegraph Tom is a 28-year-old American citizen who was raised in London We are extremely proud of the impressive work he is producing on a variety of topics, but particularly on ISIS and the growing threats to our freedom, which are a result of our current Administrations failure to lead on foreign policy We were especially pleased and proud that John McLaughlin made the announcement of the fellowship award on The McLaughlin Group Since that announcement, Tom Rogan has been a regular on The McLaughlin Group and has made numerous appearances on Fox News Channel, CNN, BBC News and other media as an expert on ISIS and Middle East issues In October 2014, the Steamboat Institute hosted our 2nd annual fundraiser cocktail reception in Washington, D C to raise funds for the Tony Blankley Chair for Public Policy and American Exceptionalism This event was held at the Kirby Center (Hillsdale College) The purpose of the Tony Blankley Chair is to honor the memory of our dear friend, Tony Blankley, who acted as Conference Moderator for our first three Freedom Conferences (2009-2011) This fellowship is awarded annually to one or more emerging scholars The recipient of the fellowship receives a significant stipend for the purpose of producing policy papers, commentaries and other such work, which serves to influence the national dialogue on public policy Our 2014 Selection Committee included Newt Gingrich, Callista Gingrich, Former Attorney General Edwin Meese, Thomas McDevitt (Chairman of The Washington Times), Lauren Maddox (Podesta Group), John OSullivan, Steve Hofman, John Roberts (author and producer of The McLaughlin Group) and Amity Shlaes (author and Chairman of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation) 4b (Code
