This chart differs significantly from the studio recorded version, and has a full chorus band intro, an interlude leading to the vocals, an extra band bridge into a vocal reprise, plus an added 24 bar band section to close. At five and a half minutes long, it's a (I'VE GOT A GAL IN) VOCAL / SWING - LL-2100 showstopper. The arrangement is scored for male vocalist plus a backing group of 5 - ideally girl, 3 tenors and baritone, and in the GLENN MILLER $ 65.00 MV/FVQ DIFF KALAMAZOO Saxes Alto 2 and Tenor 1 both double Clarinets. The Tenor solo is written on the 2nd Tenor part and also cross-cued on the male vocal part. The vocal whistling in the interlude is cued on the piano part, and we have written out the opening Trumpet solo in full. FREYERMUTH 2010 Abstract Nina Simone was a prominent jazz musician of the late 1950s and 60s. Beyond her fame as a jazz musician, Nina Simone reached even greater status as a civil rights activist. Her music spoke to the hearts of hundreds of thousands in the black community who were struggling to rise above their status as a second-class citizen. Simone’s powerful anthems were a reminder that change was going to come. Nina Simone’s musical interpretation and approach was very unique because of her background as a classical pianist. Nina’s untrained vocal chops were a perfect blend of rough growl and smooth straight-tone, which provided an unquestionable feeling of heartache to the songs in her repertoire. Simone also had a knack for word painting, and the emotional climax in her songs is absolutely stunning. Nina Simone did not have a typical jazz style. Critics often described her as a “jazz-and-something-else-singer.” She moved effortlessly through genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and even European classical. Probably her biggest mark, however, was on the genre of protest songs. Simone was one of the most outspoken and influential musicians throughout the civil rights movement. Her music spoke to the hundreds of thousands of African American men and women fighting for their rights during the 1960s. -

Winner of six Tony Awards®, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, Chicago is Broadway‟s longest-running Musical Revival and the longest running American Musical every to play the West End. It is nearly a decade since the “story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery” played in Australia. Known for its sizzling score and sensational choreography, Chicago is the story of a nightclub dancer, a smooth talking lawyer and a cell block of sin and merry murderesses. Producer John Frost today announced his stellar cast: Caroline O’Connor as Velma Kelly, Sharon Millerchip as Roxie Hart, Craig McLachlan as Billy Flynn, and Gina Riley as Matron “Mama” Morton. “I‟m thrilled to bring back to the Australian stage this wonderful musical, especially with the extraordinary cast we have assembled. Velma Kelly is the role which took Caroline O‟Connor to Broadway for the first time, and her legion of fans will, I‟m sure, be overjoyed to see her perform it once again. DISSOCIATIVE In 1943, Bethlehem Steel, then the second largest steel manufacturer in the United States, employed a record 283,735 workers. IDENTITY By 1945, the company held net assets of $880 million and had revenues of $1.1 billion. The industrial giant unified the BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA small, incredibly diverse City of Bethlehem under one roof, one cause and one AFTER BIG STEEL extremely proud identity. But in 2001, “the Steel” went bankrupt, and the blast furnaces that once roared and blazed all Evan Orf day and night went cold. Today, the city is in a state of urban renewal in attempts to reclaim a sense of unified identity in the wake of Bethlehem Steel’s collapse. Though the blast furnaces still stand, the urban renewal project, called Southside Vision 2014, is steering Bethlehem in too many different directions at the same time, giving the city a sort of dissociative identity. This essay charts both of these stories — the rise and fall of Bethlehem Steel, and the renewal of the city post-steel — and the links between them. -

Volume 26 Number 2 topical Weill Fall 2008 A supplement to the Kurt Weill Newsletter news & news events The Firebrand Returns Weill’s 1945 operetta with lyrics by Ira Gershwin and book by Edwin Justus Mayer, The Firebrand of Florence, will return to New York on 12 March 2009 for the first time since its ill-fated Broadway run. The Collegiate Chorale has assem- bled an all-star cast for the occasion, including Nathan Gunn (Benvenuto Cellini, the “Firebrand”), Anna Christy (Angela), and Terrence Mann (Duke). Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall provides the venue for a concert performance directed and narrated by Roger Rees; Paul Gemignani conducts. Other Notable Productions Montreal audiences will have the opportunity to see François Girard’s acclaimed Opéra de Lyon 2006 double bill of Der Lindberghflug and Die sieben Todsünden when the production travels to the Montreal High Lights Festival next February after successful tours to the 2006 Edinburgh Festival and to the Anna Christy Nathan Gunn 2008 New Zealand International Arts Festival in Wellington. Four performances of Girard’s imaginative and luminous staging are scheduled for 18-21 February 2009. Charles Workman plays Lindbergh, and Magdalena Anna Hofmann plays Anna I to seven different Anna IIs (one per sin); Walter Boudreau conducts the Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec. HK Gruber will lead the Klangforum Wien and Chorus Sine Nomine in a June 2009 European tour of Die Dreigroschenoper performed in concert. The multi-nation- al cast includes Ian Bostridge (Macheath), Hanna Schwarz (Celia Peachum), Dorothea Röschmann (Polly Peachum), Angelika Kirchschlager (Jenny), Florian Boesch (Tiger Brown), Lydia Teuscher (Lucy), and Christoph Bantzer (Narrator). -
