UNK COMMUNICATIONS

The University of Nebraska at Kearney Planetarium is offering opportunities to learn about the upcoming total solar eclipse. At 12:57 p.m. Aug. 21, the city of Kearney will plunge into darkness for 1 minute and 54 seconds. In a rare celestial alignment between the sun, moon and earth, the moon will cast a shadow over a small patch of the earth’s surface. That shadow will traverse the entire width of the United States in 90 minutes. T e entire continental U.S. will witness at least a partial solar eclipse, but cities on the path of totality will be the only ones to experience total darkness. Kearney is on the path of totality – a narrow strip, approximately 70 miles wide – that will stretch from the coast of Oregon to a beach in South Carolina. The last total solar eclipse in Kearney was in 1194 – 823 years ago – and the next one will be in 2744 – 727 years in the future.
