Nil Da Daguute'? Shi Shil Guuzhu!

Hello everyone,

My name is Talia Randolph I am your current Miss Mescalero Apache XXXVII here is an update on things I have been doing and places I have been for the month of May.

I ended the busy month of April by attending the 33rd Annual Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, New Mex- ico which I enjoyed very much. My adventurous week- end began with an evening at the Miss Indian World tra- ditional talent presentations. It was wonderful to see so many young, talented individuals. Each contestant had their own unique performance that told a little bit about who they are and where they come from. The Gathering of Nations is the biggest gathering of indigenous people that come together to sing, dance and/or compete. I have never seen so many royalty in one place at one time, I met ladies from all across the United States and Can- ada. Which is why I participated in the very first largest group photo of tribal royalty with 2015-2016 Miss Indian World Cheyenne Brady. This took place at Stage 49 and we were told to do our best "princess wave". I have been to the gatherings many times before but this time was different I wasn't just another spec- tator, I was able to witness everything first hand and on the arena floor with some of the worlds best dancers. I took full advantage of the opportunity and made sure I attended ever Grand Entry because it felt like a once in a lifetime chance. Definitely an experience I will never forget.

On May 6, 2016 Myranda Waldo who is Myranda in the morning on Mix 96.7 invited me to the radio station for an interview. The main purpose of this was to tell how my experience has been so far to promote the title of Miss Mescalero and recruit Apache Scout Volume 1.16, Issue 06 Page 7

potential candidates for the upcoming pageant. Just competing in the pageant is a fun and exciting experience that does take some hard work and dedication. I couldn't encour- age the young women in our community enough to take advantage. Your given an op- portunity to let everyone know who you are and what it is your capable of do- ing. If selected your able to go new places, meet new people and do new things.

Something I stressed during the interview is that I am always open and available to anyone needing any help or advice. Because it really is a great honor and I couldn't be more thankful to have been given the chance to represent not only my- self and my family but most importantly the Mes- calero Apache Tribe. A big thank you to Myranda for allowing me the time to get the word out.

A tragedy hit New Mexico and tribes all over the United States when an girl from Farmington, New Mexico was kid- napped. Ashlynne Mike was an innocent little girl who still had her entire life to live. A member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe put together a Candlelight Vigil in her honor at the Wingfield Park in Ruidoso. Seeing both communities come together in a time of need was wonderful. When speaking to the people I mentioned that I hope this was a wake up call for us to realize that anything can happen to anyone anywhere. Its our job as adults to love, protect, encourage and support our children since they are the foundation of our future. It is also important to get them educated about strangers and no matter the situation never let anyone persuade them into doing anything. Let's cherish every moment and always love unconditionally. Page 8 Apache Scout Volume 1.16, Issue 06

On May 7, 2016 I attended the Smokey Bear Days Parade in Capitan, New Mexico. In which I appeared in the Ruidoso Newspaper. This free event consisted of pic- tures with smokey the bear, food, games, a parade and ven- dors. Something for the whole family to enjoy.

The Mescalero Systems of Care invited me to the Chil- dren's Mental Health Awareness Blessing feast to wel- come everyone and say a prayer. I asked the Creator to bless our youth with wisdom, courage and understand- ing. To always guide them in the right direction and keep their minds strong and open to endless possibilities. Give us courage to face any challenges or illness that may be affecting our well being. Most importantly bring peace, love and happiness amongst the community. This bless- ing was very much enjoyable.

May 19, 2016 the Mescalero Apache Schools Class of 2016 com- pleted a very important milestone. But now a new door of oppor- tunity has just opened up. Life has just begun! Nelson Mandela once said "education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" which is why I strongly encourage them to continue their education because it is the key to happiness and a successful future. Always remember that anything is possible as long as your willing to put forth the effort. Some people say once you graduate you have to stop dreaming and face reality but I say keep dreaming and make reality. Good Luck Class of 2016!

On May 28, 2016 I will be at- tending the Mescalero Apache Head Start Graduation where I will be saying the invocation. Early childhood education is very important because it's supports the mental, social, and emotional development of young children. The program gets them ready for the next level of education. Before we Apache Scout Volume 1.16, Issue 06 Page 9

know it these students will be graduating from high school and college.

"If your not willing to learn no one can help you if your deter- mined to learn no one can stop you" Congratulations Graduates! Reach for the stars.

Many Blessing to the Mescalero Apache Tribe!

Far too soon we have had to write a letter like this, but we are staying strong for our family and friends. We the family of Becky Jo Lester, would like to say a very heart felt THANK YOU. We would like to thank every one for their prayers, hugs, and kind words. And also the food, and drinks, blankets and cards. Becky was my little play doll and I would take her to school and show her off. I was so proud to be a big sister to the baby. If you didn't know she was the first PRINCESS our family. In kindergarten we have a picture of Becky with a crown as the PRINCESS for kindergarten. In growing up Becky was an athlete by nature. She loved to run and play basketball. As a teenager the world got a hold of her young and she had to grow up fast by her own choices. As we say that, a lot of her friends were concerned, but as my mother would say “she always landed on her feet.” Our sister was tough as nails when need be. But there was a side of her that only a chosen few got to see, that few you were lucky because she didn’t al- ways let anyone in that circle. Becky was rough around the edges but we loved her just the same as the day mom brought her home. Thank you again, Micheal and Tammy Torres and family, George Lester Jr., Joel Lester, Frank Lester, Branson Lester, Harlon Lester, Brittney Salazar. We would like to give our sincere gratitude for all the love and support, during our time of need. Our mother, Anita Lester, is the rock of our life, now I need to be the rock for my siblings. We would like to thank you for the monitory gifts and kind words. It is going to be hard to move forward without MOM, but we come from a strong stalk and will continue to keep showing what Parker and Anita Lester have taught us from childhood to adult- hood. And for that we are very proud to be their chil- dren. Tammy Torres, *Annette Torres, George Lester Jr., Joel Lester, and Becky Lester. Once again a BIG THANK YOU and God Bless all of you. Sincerely, Parker and Anita Lester’s children The family, relatives, and friends of Freddie Charlie Apache Jr. would like to take this time in thank- ing each and every one of you for your support dur- ing our heaviest days.

There are no words to express how much we appreci- ate everyone for their strong words, prayers, food and drinks, and most of all, respects as we reflected on Charlie’s life.

Thank you and God Bless you all,
