Auctioning Cliff & Shadows Signed Guitars at Celebrating the Shadows Auctioning Cliff & Shadows signed guitars at Celebrating the Shadows for Children in Need Submitted by: Bluebird Associates Wednesday, 11 November 2009 Signed by Hank, Bruce, Brian and Cliff at Wembley Arena on 23rd October before their last UK ‘Reunited Tour’ show, this is a fantastic opportunity to own a piece of Cliff and the Shadows memorabilia. These two guitars will be auctioned during the 8.30pm interval at the Celebrating the Shadows for Children in Need concert on Friday 20th November at Loddon Valley Leisure Centre, Lower Earley, Reading, Berkshire. The guitars: A Fender 50’s Classic Stratocaster finished in fiesta red, donated by Fender featuring: Chrome hardware Vintage Pickups Tinted Maple Neck Five way switch Aged Cream Pickup Covers, Knobs, Switch Tip, Tremolo Arm Tip Steel Tremolo Block A Burns Marquee kindly supplied by Barry Gibson, featuring: Gold hardware Three Burns Alnico Rez-o-matik pickups Maple Neck with Rosewood fingerboard Five way switch Push/pull pickup selector Burns deluxe tremolo unit Limited Edition box set, including the Reunited CD, bonus 3 track CD and Jigsaw. Signed by Cliff, Hank, Bruce and Brian and donated by Bruce Welch himself! Donated by Oasis Music we also have a leather guitar strap signed by Hank & Bruce. This is the prototype of the strap supplied with The Shadows 50th Anniversary Collectors Outfit and is unique being in brown instead of the black of the production versions Celebrating the Shadows is a Concert to raise funds for Children in Need. Hot on the heels of Cliff and The Shadows’ European tour, four leading Shadows Tribute Bands will stage an evening of nostalgia with a string of all the old hits including Apache, FBI and Wonderful Land. In the late 50s and 60s Shadows music inspired thousands of budding guitarists who all wanted to be Hank Marvin – and here they are Page 1 still going strong! It’s the country’s secret cult, with hundreds of members in Shadows Clubs across the country. During the afternoon there will be a Shadows Club players session to backing tracks, starting at 3.15pm. The information is at such a simple level, and is about such a familiar subject, that much of the text seems of little use.

    I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.
