Illinois Civil War Detail Report John Purtteman, age 17 and residing in China, Lee County, Illinois enlisted as a Private in Co D, 140th Illinois US Infantry at China, Lee County, Illinois on 1 June 1864 for a period of 100 days. He was born in Davenport, Iowa was single and a farmer. He mustered in at Camp Butler, Illinois 18 June 1864 and mustered out 29 October 1864 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He re-enlisted in Co L, 7th Illinois US Cavalry on 15 February 1865 at Dixon, Illinois and mustered out 4 November 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
