Wealth management, as the firm prefers to call it, now accounts for nearly half of its sales and earnings. That has put the company in a sweet spot as people flock back to the market after a long hibernation. orkplace health and wellness are paramount to each and every employee on an organization’s roster. Health and wellness are also critical to the organization itself: Staying well on the job can mean W superior performance, corporate benefi ts and effi ciencies, and more. “It’s a business appointment you make with yourself and with your company,” says Ed Gober, vice president of fi tness at New York Health and Racquet Club. Gober says an increasing number of high-tech companies putting down roots in New York have created an uptick in company-led health and fi tness activities, as well as heightened awareness surrounding corporate wellness. Corporate health and wellness often start at the top: Upper-level executives should strive to remain, or become, healthier themselves. According to Dr. Craig Dushey, assistant clinical professor of orthopedics at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, older executives should know that maintaining health and productivity results in “increasing the good and decreasing the bad.” Among the “good” are better mental acuity, higher rates of optimism, less depression and protection against age-related diseases such as heart problems and arteriosclerosis. Dr. Dushey also notes that addressing muscular-skeletal issues is particularly important for middle-aged and older executives. “The American message has long been to get out and move for cardiovascular fi tness,” Dr. Dushey says. “But the new understanding is overall balance, muscular elasticity and bones. Bone is a living tissue. The more you use your muscular-skeletal system, the better it gets.”

The Workplace Benefi ts Effective executive functioning — and the effects of different forms of exercise on decision making — are explored in a recent study by the Institut Universitaire de Gériatrie de Montréal, affi liated with the University of Montreal. The researchers note business leaders rely on their abilities to manage time and space, remember details and organize and plan — and that all of these functions benefi t from a wide variety of exercise. One test group in the study was assigned high-intensity aerobic exercises, another intensive strength training and a third group tasks that targeted gross motor activities, such as coordination, balance, ball games, locomotive tasks and fl exibility. Aerobics and strength-training improved overall fi tness, but all three methods actually helped boost cognitive functioning. “As you go from decade to decade, you want to increase the amount of low impact, non-weight-bearing exercise, such as biking and swimming, and decrease the high- impact, high-weight-bearing things like distance running,” says Dr. Dushey, who was businesses on employee health and fi tness and creates customized programs. not involved with the University of Montreal study. “People appreciate it when their companies care about them. Launched in January, the program already has been embraced by executives at companies like Goldman Sachs Group and Morgan Stanley. “Executives who are making a decision about a company-wide wellness program need to look at both impact and cost,” Ms. Singh continues. “You can have a very “We’re fi nding out how much these executives don’t know about their own bodies,” impactful program for a reasonable cost, or a standard, one-size-fi ts-all program at says Dr. Jennifer Solomon, medical director of the new program. “Education is really the same cost. Some insurance companies offer online wellness programs, but the costs “Company fi tness trends over the past 10 years usually involve high-end gyms, but of these generic programs need to be weighed against their presumed effectiveness, we wanted to make it more medical, with data and research behind the program,” Dr. as well as any compensating premium reduction, Ms. Singh says.
