Within the wide variety of food system initiatives, our focus remains the same: ensuring that all New Yorkers have equitable access to nutritious, affordable, and sustainable food. The work of the many City agencies that play a role in improving our food system is highlighted in the pages that follow. This year’s Food Metrics Report is a brief update on our progress to continue to build a just and healthy food system for New York City’s residents. We appreciate the support of Mayor Bill de Blasio, Deputy Mayor Herminia Palacio, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, and the many Commissioners and agency staff who create and support policies and programs that move our food system towards its goals of equity. The diversity of food cultures and traditions contribute to the extraordinary role that food plays in all of our lives and across our city. Access to food is a fundamental human right, and it is our responsibility as a city to ensure that all residents have the ability and opportunity to access nutritious, affordable food through the systems and resources we deliver. While many factors – including national and even international dynamics – affect our city’s food system, we are committed at the local level to ensure that all New Yorkers, regardless of where they live, their income level, age, gender identity, race, ethnicity, or immigration status, can take full advantage of food that promotes individual and planetary health. Our city agencies deliver on this commitment every day. This work is highlighted in this year’s Food Metrics Report as a summary of the progress we are making to build a resilient and equitable food system. The current report provides a strong overview of the production, processing, distribution, and consumption of food provided by City agencies to the communities we serve. -
