Lilio Gregorio Giraldi authored many works on literary history, mythology, and antiquities. The work gives a panoramic view of European poetry in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century, concentrating above all on Italy. Dialectical Disputations, Volume 1: Book I. Valla sought to replace the scholastic tradition of Aristotelian logic with a new logic based on the historical usage of classical Latin and on a commonsense approach. Marsilio Ficino , the Florentine scholar-philosopher-magus, was largely responsible for the Renaissance revival of Plato. -

L’interesse risale ai suoi com- mentatori antichi i quali proprio a partire dai nomi offrono le informa- zioni più dettagliate e più ghiotte per gli antiquari e i filologi. È dietro le citazioni di nomi che si seguono le tracce di opere perdute che sono state la fonte del poeta augusteo, si raggranellano frammenti di autori di cui a loro volta spesso non resta che il nome. Fatto sta che la biblio- grafia sull’onomastica virgiliana è ormai sterminata e se ne ricava la sensazione che sia giunto il momento di una riflessione generale e di un bilancio critico sull’uso che è stato fatto dei nomi propri, particolar- mente dell’Eneide, nell’ambito dell’esegesi e dei commenti, a scopo let- terario, linguistico e storico-antiquario. È, infatti, a partire dai nomi che Virgilio è stato utilizzato ora come fonte storica ora come serbatoio di tradizioni altrimenti perdute ora, perfino, come guida topografica, di cui esempio più noto e qui perti- nente è la ricerca dell’ubicazione reale dell’antro della Sibilla nell’area archeologica di Cuma sulla scorta della descrizione fattane nell’Eneide.1 Per ovvi motivi ruolo privilegiato come repertorio di ono- mastica sotto il profilo storico e geografico ha l’Italia, che è, per quanto riguarda l’Eneide, meta e teatro degli avvenimenti di oltre metà del poema e, per quanto riguarda le Georgiche, spazio ideale della vita campestre e delle risorse dell’agricoltura. -

AVVERTENZA 11 lavoro, nato come inventario di un « fondo » dell Archivio di Stato geno vese a fini essenzialmente archivistici e non storici, risente di questa sua origine nella rigorosa limitazione dei regesti a quel fondo, pur ricostruito sulla base dell’ordine cronologico dei documenti, e nella sobrietà discreta dei singoli re gesti. Del pari la bibliografia non vuol essere un repertorio critico e non intende richiamare tutte le edizioni comunque eseguite dei diversi atti, ma limita i riferim enti alle edizioni principali, apparse nelle raccolte sistematiche più comu nem ente accessibili, ed a quanto fu pubblicalo del codice diplomatico dell Im periale. Si è ritenuta peraltro utile anche una serie di riferimenti agli Annali di Caffaro e Continuatori per i passi in cui si ricordano i fatti significati dai docum enti del fondo. Il lettore d’altra parte facilmente rileverà che tale appa rato si riferisce con larga prevalenza ai secoli del Medio Evo; il che rappresenta un fatto pieno di significato, anche se la serie dei richiami, come si è detto, e largamente incompleta. Gli indici, alla cui redazione ha direttamente collaborato, col dott. Liscian- drelli ed il dott. Costamagna, anche il Segretario prof. T.O. De Negri, che ha cu rato l’edizione, si riferiscono strettamente ai nomi riportati nei Regesti, ove spesso, per ovvie ragioni, i nominativi personali sono suppliti da richiami anoni mi o da titoli generici (re, pontefice1, imperatore...). Essi hanno quindi un valore indicativo di massima e non possono esaurire la serie dei riferimenti. Per m aggior chiarezza diamo di seguito, col richiamo alle sigle e nell or dine alfabetico delle sigle stesse, l’elenco delle pubblicazioni utilizzate. -

Also known as Grotta vecchia di Pozzuoli (old cave of Pozzuoli), it was built at the time of Emperor Augustus to connect Naples to Campi Flegrei. At the entrance, situated not too far from Giacomo Leopardi’s tomb, it is now possible to see two frescoed niches: the one on the left has a raffiguration of the Madonna and her Baby from the 14th century, while, on the right one, which is of uncertain origins, God’s face is depicted. The tunnel is oriented so that, in occasion of the equinoxes, the sun is perfectly allineated between the two entrances at dusk and dawn, which enables the natural light to illuminate it completely. This crypt, besides being an essential passage to connect Neàpolis with Puteoli harbour, was also a place of worship where initiation rites took place. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis explores the transmission of information about classical inscriptions and their use in historical scholarship between 1530 and 1603. It aims to demonstrate that antiquarians' approach to one form of material non-narrative evidence for the ancient world reveals a developed sense of history, and that this approach can be seen as part of a more general interest in expanding the subject matter of history and the range of sources with which it was examined. It examines the milieu of the men who studied inscriptions, arguing that the training and intellectual networks of these men, as well as the need to secure patronage and the constraints of printing, were determining factors in the scholarship they undertook. It then considers the first collections of inscriptions that aimed at a comprehensive survey, and the systems of classification within these collections, to show that these allowed scholars to produce lists and series of features in the ancient world; the conventions used to record inscriptions and what scholars meant by an accurate transcription; and how these conclusions can influence our attitude to men who reconstructed or forged classical material in this period.
