And this is exactly what the program reflected. The morning was devoted to identifying (technical) “hardware gaps” in both companies’ unique integrated infrastructure in the informal setting of a closed room discussion. Profound insights were shared, topics of concern discussed and issues in need of attention noted for further action.

These activities were not only approached with a great deal of enthusiasm and laughter (not to mention sweat!); they also fostered a great sense of team spirit and encouraged problem- solving skills as the trainers highlighted the “lessons learnt” from each team challenge for potential everyday work situations and reminded the participants of the importance of Teamwork is a much talked about subject. Five and a half years is quite a long time! Even though my family and I did not spend them in Hamburg in one go (the first stint lasted for four years from mid- 2004 to mid-2008, the second from 2010 to the end of 2011), we definitely had plenty of time to experience the German way of life. However, mid 2011 it was finally time to head back to Bombay (as old-timers like me still prefer to call the city, even though it was officially renamed Mumbai in 1995). Hamburg

Many of my colleagues in Hamburg asked me how it felt to be heading back home. Which home? I asked myself. After all those years living in Hamburg, that was our home. We used to really look forward to being in Bombay every year during the Christmas break but when the holidays were over, we were equally as happy to be back “home” in Hamburg. And yet our true home is Bombay and will probably always remain so. The funny thing is that we can still recall the mixed feelings of excitement and apprehension when we first moved to the northern German city. And we felt a similar rollercoaster of emotions when we left: Sad to be giving up the life we had made for ourselves in Hamburg but overjoyed at the prospect of returning Mumbai to our family and friends, colorful and noisy festivals, a challenging new assignment at IOT, the varied Gates to the world Mumbai's famous Indian cuisine, Bollywood movies in upscale Gateway to India (on top) and Hamburg's multiplexes and so much more.
