    Scholarship Boys and Children's Books

Scholarship Boys and Children’s Books: Working-Class Writing for Children in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s Haru Takiuchi Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University, March 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores how, during the 1960s and 1970s in Britain, writers from the working-class helped significantly reshape British children’s literature through their representations of working-class life and culture. The three writers at the centre of this study – Aidan Chambers, Alan Garner and Robert Westall – were all examples of what Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy (1957), termed ‘scholarship boys’. By this, Hoggart meant individuals from the working-class who were educated out of their class through grammar school education. The thesis shows that their position as scholarship boys both fed their writing and enabled them to work radically and effectively within the British publishing system as it then existed. Although these writers have attracted considerable critical attention, their novels have rarely been analysed in terms of class, despite the fact that class is often central to their plots and concerns. This thesis, therefore, provides new readings of four novels featuring scholarship boys: Aidan Chambers’ Breaktime and Dance on My Grave, Robert Westall’s Fathom Five, and Alan Garner’s Red Shift. The thesis is split into two parts, and these readings make up Part 1. Part 2 focuses on scholarship boy writers’ activities in changing publishing and reviewing practices associated with the British children’s literature industry. In doing so, it shows how these scholarship boy writers successfully supported a movement to resist the cultural mechanisms which suppressed working-class culture in British children’s literature.

BRITISH EXPERIENCE OF A. I. AND ITS USE IN THE CONSERVATION OF RARE PIG BREEDS J. R. Walters and P. N. Hooper Masterbreeders (Livestock Development) Ltd. Hastoe, Tring, Herts. HP23 6PJ. UK. SUMMARY There are seven endangered pig breeds in Britain being conserved by a semen freezing programme financed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. To date, 22 boars have been frozen with satisfactory semen parameters. Where- ever possible fresh semen is also made available to breeders and data from 14 boars suggest similar semen parameters to the main white breeds. However significant numbers of rare breed boars show low libido. On average. Prostaglandin F2«C is used twice as often in rare breeds. On limited observations, the Berkshire and Large Black breeds appear most affected. INTRODUCTION In Great Britain endangered pig breeds are maintained mostly in small groups (maximum of 2 boars and 15 females) on a variety of farms. The major problem with this is the avoidance of inbreeding and genetic drift. Smith (1984) and Maijala et al (1984) have outlined the suitability of rotational systems of breeding to minimise inbreeding as long as numbers are adequate. However, of the seven British breeds listed with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST), six are category one (critical) and only one - Gloucester Old Spot - category two (rare). Although there has been an increase in litter notifications and herd book registrations in most breeds over the past five years, there remains concern over the future of the breeds, particularly as in some breeds more than 50% of litters are cross bred.

The Tamworth Breeders’ Club Autumn 2011 Volume 6, Issue 1 TamworthTamworth Tamworths - The future’s orange! TrumpetTrumpet New Club Secretary Lucy has decided to relinquish being Tamworth secretary owing to changed circumstances in her life- style which have severely reduced the amount of time available for her to do the job as she wanted. She has done an enormous amount for us over the past year not least completely revising and updat- ing the membership list and determining who was and who was not paid up! Inside this issue: She also oversaw the revamping of our website transferring the domain to the club’s ownership and control. Not least she has been very patiently dealing with members queries and problems, some of Tamworth Trifles 2 which were far from easy going to sort out. We are very grateful to her for putting such a lot of her time into the role and are delighted that she intends to continue her membership. We shall also look Chairman’s Message 3 forward to seeing her in her position at the Royal Berks Show which she undertakes with great finesse 25 Years with Tammys 4-5 and success each year. Thank you Lucy for being there for us at a difficult time. Howes ‘At! 6 We are very lucky to have found someone to take over from Tammys in NZ 7 Lucy and here is an introduction in her own words: My name is Michele Baldock, and I live on a smallholding on New Book 8 the Romney Marsh in Kent with my husband Mark and two daughters Florence & Edie.

China (Received 24 July 2006; accepted 18 July 2007) Abstract – Microsatellite diversity in European and Chinese pigs was assessed using a pooled sampling method on 52 European and 46 Chinese pig populations. A Neighbor Joining analysis on genetic distances revealed that European breeds were grouped together and showed little evidence for geographic structure, although a southern European and English group could ten- tatively be assigned. Populations from international breeds formed breed specific clusters. The Chinese breeds formed a second major group, with the Sino-European synthetic Tia Meslan in-between the two large clusters. Within Chinese breeds, in contrast to the European pigs, a large degree of geographic structure was noted, in line with previous classification schemes for Chinese pigs that were based on morphology and geography. The Northern Chinese breeds were most similar to the European breeds. Although some overlap exists, Chinese breeds showed a higher average degree of heterozygosity and genetic distance compared to European ones.
