AUDITION NOTICE DARLINGTON THEATRE PLAYERS (Marloo Theatre) presents Twisted: The Untold story of a Royal Vizier. Show Outline: Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier is a musical with music by A. J. Holmes, lyrics by Kaley McMahon, and book by Matt Lang, Nick Lang, and Eric Kahn Gale. The musical parodies the 1992 Walt Disney Animation Studios' film Aladdin, and The Walt Disney Company in general, telling the story from the point of view of Ja'far, the Royal Vizier. It has several nods and homages to the musical Wicked, which similarly retells a popular story from the villain's point of view. SHOW DATES: Final dress and techs: Sunday 27th June and Wednesday 30th June Week 1: 2nd, 3rd July @ 7:30pm; 4th July @ 2pm Week 2: 7th, 9th, 10th July @ 7:30pm; 11th July @ 2pm Week 3: 14th, 16th, 17th July @ 7:30pm Bump out: 18th July AGE REQUIREMENT: Due to the explicit content in the show, all auditionees must be 18+ at time of audition. CONTENT WARNING: Twisted is a hilariously clever show but also contains some explicit content including strong language, sexual references and adult themes. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: All ages listed are suggested stage ages and should not discourage auditionees. Character Stage age/gender Breakdown Ja’far (Lead) Male, 35-50 Painted by Disney as the villain of the story, Twisted offers a new perspective. Once optimistic and daring, Ja’far has been twisted Tenor, strong by the harsh realities of life to become sceptical and bitter. As belt the leading man of the show, Ja’far requires a commanding presence and exceptional vocals. Princess (Lead) Female, 18 -25 Naive yet assertive princess of the magic kingdom. Yearns for more out of life and falls for Aladdin’s manipulative attempts at Mezzo seduction. Bold acting, strong singing and comedic timing soprano, belt required. Aladdin (Lead) Male, 25-35 Cocky, arrogant and quick witted, Aladdin is no longer the hero of the story and instead is painted as a conniving thief, Tenor desperate to manipulate the princess into becoming his. Sherrezade Female, 25-35 Sherrezade is storyteller, determined to spend her thousand and (Support) one nights to the fullest. Jafar’s love interest. Strong vocals and lots of heart. Mezzo Prince Male, 30-45 Formally a “silly side character, here only to illustrate [the Achmed* princess’]reluctance to get married”, Achmed takes on a life of (Support) his own. Determined for revenge yet tainted by his own patheticness, Achmed is a hilarious addition to the show. Strong Baritone comedy skills required and the ability to captivate and entertain and audience. The Royal Male, 30-45 Dictatorial and selfish. Precedes Ja’far in the role of Vizier. * Vizier* Traditionally double casted with Prince Achmed, but will be (Support) determined based on auditionees. Baritone The Djinn ** Male, 30-45 A new take on Robin William’s iconic role. The Djinn, praised as (Support) an all knowing and mighty one, prefers to use his cosmic powers to watch films and memorise quotes. Extremely quick witted and Non-singing entertaining; ability to confidently improvise desired. role (preference to sing in chorus numbers) The Sultan ** Male, 40-60 Dim-witted and lacking the authority associated with his title, (Support) the Sultan is a laughable yet loveable addition to the cast. Strong comedy skills. ** Traditionally double casted with the Djinn but Non-singing will be determined based on auditionees. role (preference to sing in chorus numbers) Captain Male, 20-35 Captain of the royal guard. He is strong, authoritative and enjoys (Support) mocking Ja’far for his failures. Non-singing role (preference to sing in chorus numbers) Sea Witch Female, 30-40 Perchance inspired by an infamous sea witch from a magic (Featured) kingdom mermaid story, the Sea Witch plays the part of encouraging Ja’far to take his fate into his own hands and play Alto the game of life more strategically. Strong presence. Whoever is cast will also be a featured part of the chorus. Monkey Any A puppeteering role. Aladdin’s mischievous and resourceful (Featured) sidekick. The actor will also be part of the chorus. Bird (Featured) Any A puppeteering role. Ja’far’s condescending and rascally sidekick. The actor will also be part of the chorus. The show also includes a vibrant and active ensemble with plenty of opportunity for soloists and fun character cameos. These roles include: Scar (Lion King), Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty), Captain Hook (Peter Pan), Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations), baker, mother, librarian, Belle, orphan boy, bread seller, laundress, pregnant girl, pregnant girl’s father, slave girls, grocer, jeweller, guards, soldiers, peasants and merchants. Please note that this is a community theatre production and all roles are unpaid. .
