We are so thrilled that you’ve joined us! For the past several months these very talented young performers have worked hard, not only to create this beautiful production, but have worked to become well rounded young performers. We’ve worked on creating fully-developed characters, identifying and understanding objectives, naming relationships and understanding subtext, among many other things. At OVATIONS, we treat our actors as a community of artists investing in everyone’s experience from ensemble to the title role. Students participate in classes and master classes, from 9AM to 4PM, weekdays from August 10-21, 2020. This program is designed for all young people; from the novice to the more experienced of young artists. At the end of the two weeks, students are given the opportunity to share their experiences in an informal class demonstration for family and friends with a showcase entitled Seize the Day featuring music from hit Broadway shows such as Newsies, Beetlejuice, Dear Evan Hanson, Mean Girls and many more. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show! Production Note Matilda is a musical that follows an extraordinary girl surrounded by people who do not see her full potential. This all changes when she begins kindergarten at her new school and gains the support of the local librarian, Mrs.Phelps and her kind teacher Miss Honey. Along with her new school friends Lavender, Bruce, and the rest of the revolting children. Together they must face a new terror, Agatha Trunchbull. Matilda is determined to help these other kids even though she is also dealing with her overly eccentric parents at home. We have had the pleasure of watching these students take on this beautiful and slightly magical story, making it their own. Throughout the rehearsal process we have watched these performers create complex characters. Each student has shown their full potential and love for theater through their hardwork and dedication to the roles. It has been a very interesting and educational experience to work with these young performers, as we are both performers ourselves. We both have grown from the Junior Company to the Senior Company, and the opportunity to work as production assistants has given us a new perspective on all the work that goes behind the scenes. We are very proud of all the students and their hard-work! We are very excited to see everything come together on stage. We hope you enjoy the captivating story of Matilda the Musical!     Music & Lyrics Music & Lyrics By following the steps on the site so far, students will have created their characters and begun to plot out their scene. The next step is to think how they might add music and songs. For students who are just writing a scene, this is still an exciting step to fully understand the process of creating a musical for the theatre. The activities in this section are aimed at students of all musical abilities. For some students, the activities may be part of an early introduction to music. Other students may be much more familiar and so able to tackle the extended tasks where listed. Using the Music Webpage: The films on the Music web page will give students a real insight into Tim Minchin’s process for creating lyrics and music. After watching his interview, students can play with the sound buttons on the site to start to build up their ideas for the music for their song. Songs don’t have to be set to music but using the buttons and taking part in activities will give them a good start for thinking about the tone of their song and what kind of music might suit their lyrics. The activities outlined in this resource pack are also accompanied by a film showing how they might be used in the classroom. The exercises aim to help the students write rhythmically and lyrically. The resources can also act as standalone activities that can be adapted to other forms of music in your school curriculum. Useful Starting Points: Getting the students used to describing different styles of music and understanding the function of songs in storytelling.
