MAPS OF CAVES SURVEYED BY SAUDI GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA COMPILED BY SAUDI CAVE UNIT Abstract This collection consists of nineteen maps and sketches of caves in Saudi Arabia explored by the Saudi Geological Survey Cave Unit between 2000 and 2004. Twelve are limestone caves located in the Umm er Radhuma or Aruma formations or in the overlying, unnamed Tsm formation. Seven are lava caves, located in Harrats Khaybar, Ithnayn, Kishb and Nawasif-Buqum. Each map or sketch is accompanied by a brief description of the cave itself, its geological setting and its location. From a geographical perspective, it is considered a subcontinent of Asia.[3] It is the largest peninsula in the world, at 3,237,500 km2 (1,250,000 sq mi).[4][5][6][7][8] The peninsula consists of the countries Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.[9] The peninsula formed as a result of the rifting of the Red Sea between 56 and 23 million years ago, and is bordered by the Red Sea to the west and southwest, the Persian Gulf to the northeast, the Levant to the north and the Indian Ocean to the southeast. The peninsula plays a critical geopolitical role in the Arab world due to its vast reserves of oil and natural gas. The most populous cities on the Arabian Peninsula are Riyadh, Dubai, Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait City, Sanaʽa, and Mecca. Before the modern era, it was divided into four distinct regions: Red Sea Coast (Tihamah), Central Plateau (Al-Yamama), Indian Ocean Coast (Hadhramaut) and Persian Gulf Coast (Al-Bahrain). -

Gedo Region – Situation Analysis Context Gedo Region, the second largest region in Somalia, lies on the Somalia borders with Ethiopia and Kenya, and shares borders with four Somali regions of Bay, Bakool and Middle Jubba and Lower Jubba. It has an estimated total population of 328,3781, with a 75/25 rural/urban divide.The region is home to 76,510 IDPs2. UNHCR estimates that 16,380 IDPs arrived in Luuq, 30,000 in Doloow, and approximately 18,000 in Belet Xaawo. Gedo has six administrative districts: Garbaharey, Baardheere (the capital), Ceel Waaq in the south and Belet Xaawo, Doloow, and Luuq in the north. Two major rivers run through the region, the Dawa and the Juba. The Dawa River runs along the border of Ethiopia into Somalia’s Gedo region. The Jubba River starts from Doloow, just north of Luuq district, and flows to Buur Dhuubo and Baardheere. The economy mostly depends on rearing livestock and farming, but also has strong inter-regional and international cross-border trade with Kenya and Ethiopia, to some extent. In the northern zone the pastoralists rear sheep, goats, camels and cows. The agro-pastoral zone extends from east to west below Guban. The riverine zone extends from east to west below West Golis and is mainly a farming area where crops such as sorghum are produced. The security and access situation in north Gedo, in particular to Luuq, has relatively improved for the United Nations and International NGOs. The area is controlled by the Somali National Army forces backed by Ethiopian forces. South Gedo is more insecure due to continued clashes and greater access for Al-Shabaab (AS) in the rural areas of Garbaharey, Buur Dhuubo and Baardheere. -

Saudi-Arabia Last updated: 31-01-2004 Location and area Saudi Arabia is a monarchy of the Middle East, occupying most of the Arabian Peninsula, and bordered on the north by Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait, on the east by the Persian Gulf and Qatar, on the southeast by the United Arab Emirates and Oman, on the south by the Republic of Yemen and on the west by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. Boundaries in the southeast are not precisely defined. Saudi Arabia has an area of about 2,240,000 km2. (Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2002). Topography Considerably more than half the area of Saudi Arabia is desert. Rub‘ al Khali, known as the Great Sandy Desert and as the "Empty Quarter", extends over much of the south-east and beyond the southern frontier. Largely unexplored, Rub‘ al Khali has an estimated area of about 777,000 km2. An extension of the Syrian Desert projects into northern Saudi Arabia, and extending southeast from this region is An Nafud, an upland desert of red sand covering an area of about 57,000 km2. Ad Dahna’, a narrow extension of this desert, links An Nafud and Rub‘ al Khali. A central plateau region, broken in the east by a series of uplifts, extends south from An Nafud. Several wadis (watercourses), dry except in the rainy season, traverse the plateau region. The western limits of the latter are delineated by a mountain range extending generally northwest and southeast along the eastern edge of Al hijāz and Asir regions. Preface In 2004, I was requested to give a lecture in Muscat to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Oman-Japan Friendship Association, sponsored jointly by the Oman-Japan Friendship Association, Muscat Municipality, the Historical Association of Oman and the Embassy of Japan. It was an unexpected honour for me to be given such an opportunity. The subject of the lecture was “History of Exchange between Japan and Oman”. After I had started on my preparation, I learned that there was no significant literature on this subject. I searched for materials from scratch. I then organized the materials relating to the history of human exchange, the development of trade since the Meiji period (1868-1912) and the cultural exchanges between both countries.
