Bryan (ERYT500) - Program Director Mobile 0415 362 534 Email: [email protected] Website: www.knoffyoga.com Levels 8 & 9 – Advanced & Master THE HISTORY In 1994, Nicky Knoff and James Bryan took a sabbatical to the Mount Quincan Crater Retreat, just outside of Yungaburra in the Atherton Tablelands behind Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The goal was to create a comprehensive and complete new program, which incorporated the anatomical alignment and progression of Asanas in Iyengar Yoga, and combine it with the energetic aspects of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga viz. Bandhas, Drishti, Ujjayi Pranayama and Vinyasa. We learned in Iyengar Yoga how to progressively practice postures. For example with Backbends, you perform an easy pose to warm up, a stronger pose to work more deeply, and then the strongest pose of the session – challenging yourself in a safe and methodical manner. This safe and methodical approach – carefully easing deeper into postures, was not a concept we found in Ashtanga Yoga. In fact, as we progressed through the Series (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) we could not discern any logical sequencing. It was as if someone had written down the various yoga poses on pieces of paper, thrown them into a hat, and pulled them out at random. With traditional Ashtanga, you only progress if you can do the postures in the Series order and if not, you stay stuck on the particular challenging pose, until you can. -

New Age in Norway 307 Chapter 38 New Age in Norway New Age in Norway Ingvild Sælid Gilhus New Age up to the 1970s The background of the New Age in Norway was, like in other countries, the countercultural movement of the late 1960s, characterised by political radical- ism, the anti-war movement, hippie culture, the use of psychoactive drugs, pop music, a growing ecological awareness, and an interest in Asian religions. In the early 1970s, New Religious Movements of Asian provenance such as Hare Krishna (ISKCON), Ananda Marga, the Divine Light Mission of guru Maharaji Ji, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Transcendental Meditation as well as the Western, sufi-inspired Eckankar and the Christian-inspired Children of God had representatives in Norway. Through information meetings and courses, for instance at the universities, the representatives of these movements contrib- uted to increase the general awareness of Eastern religions and to nourish countercultural religious syncretism and alternative spirituality in Norwegian youth culture. In the 1970s there existed several distribution centres for alternative thought and lifestyle, including religious ones. Most important among them were the countercultural work communes in Hjelmsgata 1 in Oslo and on Karlsøy in Troms. In 1976 Karma Tashi Ling, a centre for Tibetan Buddhism, was opened in Oslo. It attracted people from countercultural milieus as well as Buddhists. Magazines and periodicals were important vehicles for alternative thought in the 1970s when thirty-six different titles, most of them short-lived, were pub- lished (Ahlberg 1980: 221). The most important were Vibra (appearing in 1969), Gateavisa (the Street Paper, published 1970-), Vannbæreren (Aquarius, 1974– 78), Arken (1978–1989) and Josefine (1971–1977). -

STATEMENT DS213 SWAMI YOGANANDA AND THE SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP A Successful Hindu Countermission to the West by Elliot Miller The earliest Hindu missionaries to the West were arguably the most impressive. In 1893 Swami Vivekananda (1863 –1902), a young disciple of the celebrated Hindu “avatar” (manifestation of God) Sri Ramakrishna (1836 –1886), spoke at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago and won an enthusiastic American following with his genteel manner and erudite presentation. Over the next few years, he inaugurated the first Eastern religious movement in America: the Vedanta Societies of various cities, independent of one another but under the spiritual leadership of the Ramakrishna Order in India. In 1920 a second Hindu missionary effort was launched in America when a comparably charismatic “neo -Vedanta” swami, Paramahansa Yogananda, was invited to speak at the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston, sponsored by the Unitarian Church. After the Congress, Yogananda lectured across the country, spellbinding audiences with his immense charm and powerful presence. In 1925 he established the headquarters for his Self -Realization Fellowship (SRF) in Los Angeles on the site of a former hotel atop Mount Washington. He was the first Eastern guru to take up permanent residence in the United States after creating a following here. NEO-VEDANTA: THE FORCE STRIKES BACK Neo-Vedanta arose partly as a countermissionary movement to Christianity in nineteenth -century India. Having lost a significant minority of Indians (especially among the outcast “Untouchables”) to Christianity under British rule, certain adherents of the ancient Advaita Vedanta school of Hinduism retooled their religion to better compete with Christianity for the s ouls not only of Easterners, but of Westerners as well. -

Iyengar Guruji was a believer in tradition but at the same time, he was a great revolutionary. He discovered new paths for imparting objective knowledge of a philosophical subject like yoga. Paramparã was important to him but he recognised that as the community grew larger, a different framework for teaching and assessment would be needed. Over the past few years, Geetaji and Prashantji repeatedly pointed out that assessments are losing their basic purpose and teacher training is becoming a business. Their observation and criticism have immense value in Iyengar Yoga. Their concerns have motivated us to dig deeper into the process of yoga teaching worldwide. On behalf of RIMYI, we elicited feedback on the current methodology of teaching and assessment. The response was overwhelming. Interreligious Dialogue, Comparative Theology and the Alterity of Hindu Thought Abstract A key question at the heart of contemporary debates over interreligious dialogue is whether the Christian partner in such conversations should view her interlocutors through the lens of Christian descriptions or whether any such imaging amounts to a form of Christian imperialism. We look at the responses to this question from certain contemporary forms of ‘particularism’ which regard religious universes as densely knit, and sometimes incommensurable, systems of meanings, so that they usually deny the significance, or even the possibility, of modes of Bible preaching such as apologetics. While these concerns over the alterity of other religious traditions are often viewed as specifically postmodern, two Scotsmen in British India, J.N. Farquhar (1861–1929) and A.G. Hogg (1875–1954), struggled exactly a hundred years ago with a version of this question vis-à-vis the religious universe of Vedāntic Hinduism and responded to it in a manner that has striking resemblances to ‘particularism’. We shall argue that Hogg can be seen as an early practitioner of a form of ‘comparative theology’ which emerges in his case, on the one hand, through a textual engagement with specific problems thrown up in interreligious spaces but, on the other hand, also seeks to present a reasoned defence of Christian doctrinal statements. We shall note a crucial difference between his comparative theological encounters and contemporary practitioners of the same – while the latter are usually wary of speaking of any ‘common ground’ in interreligious encounters, Hogg regarded the presuppositions of the Christian faith as the basis of such encounters. -

Throughout the Western world, pockets of people have come to cheerfully claim to being both Christian and Hindu, or Buddhist and Jewish, or any combination of two and sometimes more religious identities. A classical example of this may be found in the figure of the Christian theologian, Raimon Panikkar, who, returning from a visit to India, famously claimed that: “I ‘left’ a Christian, ‘discovered’ myself a Hindu, ‘returned’ a Buddhist, all the while remaining a ‘Christian.’”1 This enigmatic statement encapsulates a world of meaning which gradually comes to light in reading his oeuvre. Another Christian theologian, Paul Knitter, recently published a book titled Without the Buddha, I Could Not Be a Christian (London: Oneworld, 2009).
