E-mail: *[email protected] Abstract In this paper we describe four new fossil associations of “reef” and “reef”-like environments of the St. Cassian Formation (Ladinian-Carnian, Dolomites, NE Italy), based on thirty thin sections from 10 “Cipit boulders” olistoliths, which slided from the Cassian platform into coeval basin sediments. The fossil associations were determined by means of microfacies analysis using point-counting and visual estimation, as well as with aid of statistical methods, based on all fractions with a biotic significance (biomorpha and microbialites). Cluster Analyses in Q-Mode were performed, coupling three algorithms and two indices. In all samples, the main components of the framework are microbialite (average of 75%), and macrofossils (average of 20%), whereas cements and allochtonous components, such as allomicrite, do not represent a significant fraction. Based on both microbialite and fossil content, Chaetetid–microencruster Association, Microbialite–microencruster Association, Dual-type Microbialite Association and Microbialite–Terebella Association, were differentiated.

Abstract - The decapod crustaceans from the Upper Triassic (Norian) of the Dolomia di Forni Formation were reported by Garassino et al. (1996). The recent discovery of a small sample from this Formation between Seazza and Rovadia brooks allowed updating the decapod assemblages from the Norian of Carnic Pre-Alps.

Collier of Invertebrate Fossils: Conodonta SMITHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO PALEOBIOLOGY NUMBER 9 SERIAL PUBLICATIONS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION The emphasis upon publications as a means of diffusing knowledge was expressed by the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. In his formal plan for the Insti tution, Joseph Henry articulated a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This keynote of basic research has been adhered to over the years in the issuance of thousands of titles in serial publications under the Smithsonian imprint, com mencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Annals of Flight Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes original articles and monographs dealing with the research and collections of its several museums and offices and of profes sional colleagues at other institutions of learning. These papers report newly acquired facts, synoptic interpretations of data, or original theory in specialized fields. These publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, laboratories, and other in terested institutions and specialists throughout the world. Individual copies may be obtained from the Smithsonian Institution Press as long as stocks are available.

  • Misikella Ultima Kozur & Mock, 1991: First Evidence of Late Rhaetian
Bollettino della Società Paleontologica Italiana Modena, Novembre 1999 Misikella ultima Kozur & Mock, 1991: first evidence of Late Rhaetian conodonts in Calabria (Southern Italy) Adelaide MASTANDREA Claudio NERI Fabio lETTO Franco Russo Di p. di Scienze della Terra Di p. di Se. Geo!. e Paleomol. Dip. di Scienze della Terra Dip. di Scienze della Terra Univ. di Modena e Reggio Emilia Università di Ferrara Università di Napoli Federico II Università della Calabria KEY- WORDS- Conodonts, Clusters, Biostratigraphy, Basin deposits, Catena Costiera, Calabria, Rhaetian. ABSTRACT- The succession cropping out in the Fosso Pantanelle area (Mt. S. Giovanni, Calabrian "Catena Costiera'; Upper Trias) provided a rich and well preserved conodont fauna. The basin stratigraphic succession is characterized by cherty lime mudstone with minor fine- grained calciturbidites and suspected tujìtes. Conodont founa is dominated by M. hernsteini and M. posthernsteini in the lower and middle part of the section, and by M. uftima in the uppermost part. Every species is represented by a great number of specimens. On the basis of the chronostratigraphic classification ofKozur & Mock (1991), the whole section may be referred to Rhaetian. Due to the good preservation and the great abundance of conodonts (some occurring in clusters), the calabrian Catena Costiera succession may represent a reference succession for the study ofthe latest Triassic conodont founas and chronostratigraphy. RIASSUNTO- [Misikella ultima Kozur & Mock, 1991: primo ritrovamento di conodonti del Reti co su p. in Calabria (Italia meridionale)] -Recenti ricerche sulla stratigrafia dei terreni triassici affìoranti nella "Catena costiera" calabrese hanno messo in evidenza la presenza di foune a conodonti ricche e ben conservate (talvolta in clusters) che consentono di datare tali terreni all'intervallo Norico - Retico.

  • Late Triassic) Conodont and Ammonoid
LATE CARNIAN (LATE TRIASSIC) CONODONT AND AMMONOID PALEONTOLOGY OF WRANGELLIA by Emily Kathryn Hopkin B.Sc., State University of New York College at Cortland, 2004 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Geological Sciences) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) November 2009 © Emily Kathryn Hopkin, 2009 Abstract The development of conodont biochronology for the Triassic Period is hindered by the lack of understanding of the genus Metapolygnathus Hayashi, 1968a and, to a lesser extent, Carniepigondolella Kozur, 2003. Specimens of these genera collected at Klaskino Inlet, British Columbia are described as species populations of M. polygnathiformis s.l., M. carpathicus , and M. nodosus and variations within these species populations are identified. The morphological variations on platform shape, relative strength of anterior platform nodes, the “communisti trend,” fused carinal nodes and an extra carinal node are shared between all species populations. Although it is beneficial to fully document the generic variability within Metapolygnathus , these variations should not be included in the genus description. Not all variations occur in all species of the genus and only three species were looked at in this thesis. The secondary focus of this thesis addresses the uncertain position of the allochthonous terrane Wrangellia in the Late Carnian. Using paleobiogeographic techniques, data on ammonoid genera occurrences were compiled for cratonic North America, Wrangellia, and the western Pacific, and then compared using the Dice coefficient. It is concluded that ammonoid similarity levels are too low to assess significance levels. Based on the collected data, however, it appears that the Wrangellian fauna is most similar to the fauna of the middle paleolatitude of the North American craton.
