    This near-endemic Red-collared Woodpecker was just one of the many mega birds seen on our 2014 tour to Vietnam! (János Oláh) VIETNAM 9 – 30 MARCH 2014 LEADER: JÁNOS OLÁH Although Birdquest has been operating tours to Vietnam for over 20 years in 2014 we were running a revised itinerary and completed the most successful tour ever to this fascinating country! On the 2014 tour we visited again Ba Be National Park in the far north in search of White-eared Night-Heron and also included the Mang Den area to look for the endemic Chestnut-eared Laughingthrush. We managed to see both of them and the latter was a new bird to the Birdquest list – which had passed the 10,000 species mark just before our tour started! It happens occasionally on a tour when all things come together and also the luck factor is on our side but definitely Vietnam 2014 was one of these tours! We saw an amazing nine species of pheasants and partridges including the enigmatic Orange-necked Partridge, no less then twelve species of cuckoos, six species of owls including Mountain Scops Owl and Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, fifteen species of woodpeckers and an amazing ten species of laughingthrushes which is certainly a main focus of this tour. All the key Indochinese endemics were also seen amongst a good total of 373 species recorded. Highlights among the many regional or near-endemics included superb views of Germain’s Peacock-pheasant, several Pied Falconets, a male Red-collared Woodpecker, several Red-vented and Indochinese Barbets (the latter split from Black-browed), Austen’s

This was a first run for the newly reactivated Taiwan tour (which we last ran in 2006), with a new local organizer who proved very good and enthusiastic, and knew the best local sites to visit. The weather was remarkably kind to us and we had no significant daytime rain, somewhat to my surprise, whilst temperatures were pretty reasonable even in the mountains- though it was cold at night at Dasyueshan where the unheated hotel was a bit of a shock, but in a great birding spot, so overall it was bearable. Fog on the heights of Hohuanshan was a shame but at least the mid and lower levels stayed clear. Otherwise the lowland sites were all good despite it being very windy at Hengchun in the far south. Arco and I decided to use a varied assortment of local eating places with primarily local menus, and much to my amazement I found myself enjoying noodle dishes. The food was a highlight in fact, as it was varied, often delicious and best of all served quickly whilst being both hot and fresh. A nice adjunct to the trip, and avoided losing lots of time with elaborate meals.

It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed.     The magnificent Reeves's Pheasant was one of the many specialties seen on this tour (Brendan Ryan). EASTERN CHINA 3 – 27 MAY 2017 LEADER: HANNU JÄNNES Birdquest’s Eastern China tour, an epic 25 day journey across much of eastern China, focusses on an array of rare Chinese endemics and migrants, and this year’s tour once again proved a great success. The focus of the first part of the tour is to achieve good views of rarities like Spoon-billed Sandpiper, the critically endangered Blue-crowned (Courtois’s) Laughingthrush, the superb Cabot’s Tragopan and Elliot’s Pheasant and the ultra-rare Chinese Crested Tern. This was successfully achieved alongside a plethora of other much sought after species including White-faced Plover, Great Knot, stunning Saunders’s Gulls, Reed Parrotbill, eastern migrants, including Pechora Pipit, Japanese Robin, Japanese Paradise, Yellow-rumped, Narcissus and Mugimaki Flycatchers, and forest species like Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher, White-necklaced Partridge, Silver Pheasant, Buffy and Moustached Laughingthrushes, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Fork-tailed Sunbird and the delightful Pied Falconet. The second part of the tour, the ‘Northeast Extension’, visited a series of sites for various other Chinese specialities. Beginning in Wuhan, we bagged the amazing Reeves’s Pheasant and Crested Ibis, as well as stunners that included Fairy Pitta and Chestnut-winged Cuckoo. We then moved on to Jiaocheng for the fabulous Brown Eared Pheasants before flying on to Beijing, where the mountains of the nearby Hebei province yielded the endemic Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch, Chinese Nuthatch, Green-backed and Zappey’s Flycatchers and the rare Grey-sided Thrush.

All birds were subjected to clinical examination, followed by surgical invasion and post-operative care. Fractures were more common in adult non-raptor species (51.57%) as compared to raptors (48.43%). Of the 254 cases evaluated, maximum cases comprised ulnar fractures (29.70%), followed by radial (21.76%) and humeral fractures (17.35%). Treatment procedures at 340 fracture sites were maximally treated with figure-8 bandage (33.07%), external skeletal fixator-intramedullary pin (ESF+IM tie-in fixation) (20.86%), and other varied procedures. All birds were kept indoors till recovery. Treatment outcomes were dependent on the type of bone fractured and surgical method applied.

As part of Activity 1, Task 1.1a, of the TAG WorkPlan, TAG was asked to consider whether there are further possible candidate species that should be proposed to be listed on Annex 1 to the Raptors MOU. As highlighted in the relevant document to MOS2 (UNEP/CMS/Raptors/MOS2/13/ Rev.1)1, species can be proposed on the basis of: (1) updates to taxonomy and nomenclature to keep pace with current understanding; and, (2) enhanced understanding of their movements, which suggests they can be considered to be a ‘migratory species’ according to the CMS definition used by the Raptors MOU. 2. Since MOS2, there have been no taxonomic / nomenclature changes that result in the need for any proposed additions to, or removals from, Annex 1. 3. Since MOS2, working via the online WorkSpace, TAG members have already assessed a number of species, which were considered potential candidates for Annex 1 on the basis of their movements. It was concluded that only Northern Boobook (Ninox japonica) meets the CMS definition of a ‘migratory species’ on the basis of current knowledge. The founding of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris, France, in 1793 marks a historical milestone in the development of natural history. The museum’s collections subsequently grew rapidly due to acquisitions, donations and exchanges. The first years of the museum in particular were crucial in developing its role amongst the various private and national cabinets at that time, and under the directorate of Étienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire the collection grew rapidly. Crucial moments in its early history include a significant advancement in the method of specimen preservation (ahead of all other major collections at that time) due to the knowledge and use of arsenic soap, and donations on a large scale to universities and schools and as reparations due to the French wars. Vocalisations of the New Zealand Morepork (Ninox novaeseelandiae) on Ponui Island A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Alex Brighten 2015 iv Abstract Vocalisations provide an effective way to overcome the challenge of studying the behaviour of cryptic or nocturnal species. Knowledge of vocalisations can be applied to management strategies such as population census, monitoring, and territory mapping. The New Zealand Morepork (Ninox novaeseelandiae) is a nocturnal raptor and, to date, there has been little research into their vocalisations even though this offers a key method for monitoring morepork populations. Although not at risk, population monitoring of morepork will help detect population size changes in this avian predator which may prey on native endangered fauna and may suffer secondary poisoning. This study investigated the vocal ecology of morepork on Ponui Island, Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand from April 2013 to April 2014. The initial goal was to develop a monitoring method for morepork. However, due to a lack of detailed basic knowledge of their vocalisations, the primary objective shifted to filling that knowledge gap and providing baseline data for future research. The aims of this study were thus to characterise all of the calls given by the morepork on the island; to investigate spectral and temporal parameters of three main calls; to plot the amount of calling across a night and a year; and to study the responses of morepork to playback calls.
