People & Places NEWS/FEATURES Fiction, Poems Spring ARAB TIMES, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places Television 20-season TV show ends A journey back thru Kardashians drama NEW YORK, June 8, (AP): It’s almost time for all those famous Kardashians to shuffl e off to Hulu and new projects as their 20-season reality TV mainstay comes to an end. But before they do, here’s a journey back through the tears, tantrums and togetherness that propelled the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” clan to supers- tardom: The Men & the Marriages With fi ve sisters and a brother, along with the Kris and Caitlyn drama, the years have taken us through many a man, a woman or two, and a myriad of love tangles. And the action started at the get-go. The very fi rst episode references the sex tape with Brandy brother Ray J that launched the show and their mega- careers. Before that, there was Kim’s fi rst husband, music producer Damon Thomas, followed by a 72-day marriage to second hus- band, basketball player Kris Humphries, and a third trip to the altar with Kanye West. All three unions ended in divorce. Kim’s divorce from Hum- phries dragged on far longer than the marriage, threatening Kim to keep her legally tethered to Humphries at the birth of her fi rst child, with West. That didn’t happen. North West was born two months after mom’s second divorce was fi nalized in 2013. And that’s just one sister! There’s Kourtney’s on-again, off-again relationship and three kids with Scott Disick, who makes his fi rst appearance in Kardashian TV land on Episode One. This image released by Warner Bros. • Rob Kardashian, His Then-Fiancée Blac Chyna and Their Pregnancy/Newborn Daughter, for One Season
The Neoliberal Life of the “Failing” Kardashian: Robert Kardashian On (Not) Keeping up with the Kardashians Leah Groenewoud (Third year, RLCT/GEND Major) GEND 3076 Dr. Wendy Peters April 5, 2015 Introduction Keeping up with the Kardashians (KUWTK) is a reality television show that follows the lives of the Kardashian family – a famous, upper-class Californian family consisting of Kris Jenner (the Kardashians’ mother and business manager), her (now ex-) husband Caitlyn Jenner and their children. Kris’ children include Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Robert Kardashian, and Kris and Caitlyn have two younger children, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Rob & Chyna is a reality TV spin-off of KUWTK which followed Rob Kardashian, his then-fiancée Blac Chyna and their pregnancy/newborn daughter, for one season. This paper will employ a textual analysis of these two shows to analyze how Robert Kardashian’s life and life choices are portrayed as personal failures. Conversations and information about Rob – in the 12 episodes across 6 seasons of KUWTK, and 6 episodes of season 1 of Rob & Chyna which I studied – are consistently about how Rob must change, and that he is not happy or successful the way he is. Robert Kardashian is consistently portrayed as a failure, which this paper will clarify to mean a neoliberal failure. This paper will analyze the neoliberal logics of the narratives about Robert and the way he lives, including narratives about his health, his (lack of) independence and self-esteem, his marriageability and employability.i I will conclude with an analysis of how KUWTK and Rob & Chyna facilitate a ‘panoptic existence’ for Rob, in which his family, the viewers and even himself surveil and regulate Rob.

  • Ryan's Roses and Media Exposure Through the Lens of Cultivation
Colloquy Vol. 12, Fall 2016, pp. 39-51 Ryan’s Roses and Media Exposure through the Lens of Cultivation Wesley Hernandez Abstract This paper undertakes an extensive analysis of the Los Angeles radio program, Ryan’s Roses. Ryan’s Roses showcases adultery and toxic relationships in an entertaining fashion. Little research exists regarding the extent to which radio talk shows affect an individual’s engagement in romantic relationships. Studies from cultivation theory, media exposure, and radio were engaged to develop a framework for gauging negative behavioral effects in consistent listeners of the show. The subsequent analysis provides structural support for the claim that heavy listening exposure to Ryan’s Roses perpetuates distorted views of romantic relationships. Within the field of communication studies, research on cultivation effects has successfully been conducted in various parts of the world (Hetsroni & Tukachinsky, 2006). However, there exists very little research that examines the effects radio programs on people’s perception of romantic relationships. In this regard, a particular radio program that is worthwhile to explore is Ryan’s Roses. Hosted by internationally known celebrity Ryan Seacrest, Ryan’s Roses presents interpersonal conflicts among heterosexual couples whereby the girlfriend, or wife, believes that her romantic partner is secretly engaging in intimate behaviors with another woman (Seacrest, 2015). Given that a substantial amount of men commit adultery, the thematic aim of the show is to deceive, shame, and publicly embarrass such men on live radio. Ryan’s Roses follows a specific routine that consistently leads to the same dramatic conclusion, that is, a male individual having to explain his immoral and adulterating actions to his romantic partner.

FORUM FOR ANTHROPOLOGY AND CULTURE, 2017, NO. 13 WHAT MAKES A RESTAURANT ETHNIC? (A CASE STUDY OF ARMENIAN RESTAURANTS IN ST PETERSBURG) Evgenia Guliaeva Th e Russian Museum of Ethnography 4/1 Inzhenernaya Str., St Petersburg, Russia [email protected] A b s t r a c t: Using restaurants in St Petersburg serving Armenian cuisine as a case study, the article studies the question of what makes an ethnic restaurant ethnic, what may be learnt about ethnicity by studying a restaurant serving a national cuisine, and to what extent the image of Armenian cuisine presented in Armenian restaurants corresponds to what Armenian informants tell us. The conclusion is that the composition of the menu in these restaurants refl ects a view of Armenian cuisine from within the ethnic group itself. The representation of ethnicity is achieved primarily by discursive means. Neither owners, nor staff, nor customers from the relevant ethnic group, nor the style of the interior or music are necessary conditions for a restaurant to be accepted as ethnic. However, their presence is taken into account when the authenticity or inauthenticity of the restaurant is evaluated. Armenian informants, though, do not raise the question of authenticity: this category is irrelevant for them. Keywords: Armenians, ethnicity, ethnic restaurants, national cuisine, authenticity, St Petersburg. To cite: Guliaeva E., ‘What Makes a Restaurant Ethnic?
