 Commitment Definition?  A person who works very hard to do or support something  Examples of Commitment?  Accountable  Walks the walk  Punctual  Honest  Great effort  Mentally tough/Determined  Overcomes obstacles/No excuses  Acquires necessary knowledge  Enemy of Commitment?  Fear  Excitement/Passion Starts, Commitment/Motivation Finishes  Commitment is a Choice  Commitment Actions?  Set goals  Write it down  Sign it  Date it  Tell others  List priorities/goals in order of importance  Make sacrifices  Commitment Tips?  Feed your vision/Goal  Prioritize  Sacrifice  Develop Good Habits  Be Flexible  Keep moving forward, no matter what  Be accountable 1) You told your parents that if they let your friend stay overnight on Saturday, you would study all day Sunday for your test on Monday. They let you have the friend over. But now, Sunday afternoon, the weather is beautiful and some of your other friends have called and asked you to go to the park with them. 2) Lexi asked you to come to her party. Even though Lexi isn't one of your good friends, you agreed because you didn't have anything else to do that night. Then your best friend calls and excitedly tells you that his dad got tickets for a professional soccer match through a raffle at work. It's the same night as Lexi's party. Ouch! 3) The teacher gave you a break on your missing term paper because she believed you had done it but left it in another classroom. She gives you permission to go get it but tells you to hurry up, as she has to go somewhere else. As you pass the gym on the way to your locker, some friends invite you to stop and shoot baskets. You want to, and for a moment you think that you can spare the time if you run all the rest of the way. 4) The coach says if you miss a practice, you can't play in the next game. You are supposed to show your commitment to the team, though, by showing up in uniform and watching the game from the bench. You missed a practice. You don't want to have to show up in uniform and just watch from the bench. 5) Your parents asked you to be home at ten. A new group of friends urges you to stay with them until ten thirty. They say your parents won't care, but you know your parents have a good reason for you to be home at the time they said. 6) You've been dating Cristina for six months. You've asked her not to date anyone else and promised that you wouldn't either. Good-looking Pamela sends you a note in history class, asking you to go out with her. Cristina and her family are going out of town next weekend—it's a perfect opportunity to go out with Pamela. Still, it could lead to a real mess. Cristina would probably find out, and Pamela would have expectations of you after that. 7) A group of your peers are talking about your good friend. You are tempted to join in the mean talk in order to belong to this group.

Have you ever wondered why one student may be more resilient than another? Let's say Lisa and Jenny are students in the same eighth grade math class. They both struggle during the quarter and, in the end, they both receive low final grades. Upon hearing the news, Lisa and Jenny share myriad negative emotions: disappointment, anger, fear and sadness. However, after a few days, they diverge in their coping strategies. Lisa picks herself up; she finds a tutor and commits to making a greater effort in math going forward. Meanwhile, Jenny tumbles into a downward spiral of negativity; she sulks and starts performing poorly in all of her subjects. Lisa and Jenny faced the same adversity, so why did one bounce back while the other did not? Lisa and Jenny coped differently with the same challenge. Lisa knew she received a low grade, but she believed she would improve by making a greater effort; she also felt that one bad grade wasn't the end of the world. Lisa's beliefs led her to acquire a tutor. Jenny, on the other hand, believed that doing poorly in math had spoiled her chances of getting into a good college. Jenny thereby decided there was no point in trying at all in school and began skipping her classes and neglecting her studies. Lisa's optimistic and more realistic beliefs contributed to her high resilience in an adverse situation. Jenny's pessimistic and unrealistic beliefs contributed to low resilience in the same adverse situation. The extraordinary scene was captured by photography student Casey Gutteridge at the Santago Rare Leopard Project in Hertfordshire. The 19-year-old, from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, who was photographing the leopard for a course project was astounded by the mouse’s behavior.

He said: “I have no idea where the mouse came from – he just appeared in the enclosure after the keeper had dropped in the meat for the leopard. He didn’t take any notice of the leopard, just went straight over to the meat and started feeding himself.”

“But the leopard was pretty surprised – she bent down and sniffed the mouse and flinched a bit like she was scared. In the meantime the mouse just carried on eating like nothing had happened.” But even a gentle shove does not deter the little creature from getting his fill… “It was amazing, even the keeper who had thrown the meat into the enclosure was shocked – he said he’d never seen anything like it before.”

Project owner Jackie James added: “It was so funny to see – Sheena batted the mouse a couple of times to try to get it away from her food. But the determined little thing took no notice and just carried on.” The mouse just continued to eat the leopard’s lunch and show the leopard who was the Boss. Just proves no one can push you around without your permission.  Main points of lesson?  What are you committed to right now?  What would you like to be committed to?  16 Goals Cards  Next Week: Goal #2 Unselfishness
