    ROWDY GAINES: A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE By Mark Muckenfuss Check out the January issue of Swimming World Magazine and read all about Rowdy Gaines, past and present, in Emily Mason's "Still Kicking" column. In 1984, Rowdy won the 100 meter free at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Following is the story of Rowdy's Olympic triumph as it appeared in Swimming World back in September 1984: Sentimental favorite Rowdy Gaines polished off the end of his individual career with gold, achieving what he has so many times failed to do in the past few years: coming back in a final heat with a time faster than in the morning prelims. What looked like the end of a great American comeback story was tarnished, however, by a controversial start that left a bad taste in the mouths of many of the other competitors, particularly Australian Mark Stockwell, who won the silver, and American Mike Heath, who finished fourth. After congratulating Gaines on his win, Heath, who was caught off balance on the start and was the last swimmer off the blocks, struck at the water with his fist and angrily left the pool. He reportedly said he could have gotten a better start at a novice meet. The Australians filed a formal protest. Peter Evans, Stockwell's teammate, was furious. "You were robbed, mate," he told Stockwell as the medal winners walked to the awards presentation. The complaint was that the start was too quick. The Australians said official Francisco Silvestri of Panama fired the starting gun before all the swimmers were set.

    Swimming and Diving DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Michigan wins fi rst championship since 1995, 12th overall: — When Michigan’s Bruno Ortiz pulled himself out of the water after swimming the anchor leg in the 400- yard freestyle relay at the 2013 Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, the singing started. “Hail to the Victors” echoed around the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI March 30, beginning with two Michigan spectator sections on one side of the building and carrying over to the Michigan bench area on the pool deck. The Wolverines did not win the 400 free relay; they fi nished second. But it didn’t matter. Michigan had wrapped up its fi rst national team title since 1995 long before that fi nal relay event. It was the 12th national title for Michigan, and meant it was no longer tied with Ohio State for the overall lead in Division I men’s titles. “This morning, we just kind of let our passion drive us. And that was it,” said Connor Jaeger, who began Michigan’s title drive on the fi nal night of the three-day meet with a victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He also won the 500 free in the meet’s fi rst individual race. Michigan’s victory halted a two-year title run by California, which fi nished second. “We started four years ago working on this,” said Michigan’s fi fth-year coach Mike Bottom. “You do it one day at a time; you do it one student-athlete at a time.

    EFFECT OF PREFREEZING TREATMENTS ON QUALITY OF MANGO (Manguifera Indica L.) DURING FROZEN STORAGE by ANGELA RINCON (Under the direction of William L. Kerr) ABSTRACT At the moment there is a high demand for high-quality fruit ingredients to be used in many food formulations such as pastry and confectionery products, ice cream, frozen desserts and sweets, fruit salads, cheese and yoghurt. The overall objective was to improve quality of frozen mango using two types of food cryoprotection: one was the reduction of water content of the fruit (osmotic dehydration) and the other was the formulation of mango pulp with carbohydrates of different molecular weight to increase frozen stability. Osmotic dehydration was able to modify quality parameters of slices before and after frozen storage. Values for some parameters such as vitamin C, lightness (L*), chroma (C*), and firmness for non osmotically dehydrated slices were significantly higher than osmotically dehydrated slices. However, treatments carried out with osmotic solutions (especially those with high concentrations of sucrose) improved significantly the quality of mango slices after frozen storage. Higher moisture losses and solid gain values were reported for slices from the highest osmotic solution concentration. Thus, slices dipped in 30oBrix were better protected against freezing damage. Effects of sucrose concentration on the slices and ripening stage on frozen-thawed mango flavor perception were determined. Six flavor descriptors (color, flavor, sweetness, sourness, firmness and juiciness) were evaluated by a sensory trained panel. All descriptors were affected by sugar content and ripening stage. To study the effect of mango fruit composition on frozen stability, five pulp samples were prepared and evaluated in terms of glass transition temperature modification and its influence on ascorbic acid retention.

    USC History USC’s McDonald’s Swim Stadium Home of Champions The McDonald’s Swim Stadium, the site of the 1984 Olympic swimming and diving competition, the 1989 U.S. Long Course Nationals and the 1991 Olympic Festival swimming and diving competition, is comprised of a 50-meter open-air pool next to a 25-yard, eight-lane diving well featuring 5-, 7 1/2- and 10-meter platforms. The home facility for both the USC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams conforms to all specifications and requirements of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). One of the unusual features of the pool is a set of movable bulkheads, one at each end of the pool. These bulkheads are riddled with tiny holes to allow the water to pass through and thus absorb some of the waves that crash into the pool ends. The bulkheads can be moved, so that the pool length can be adjusted anywhere up to 50 meters. The McDonald’s Swim Complex is located in the northwest corner honoring the legendary USC coach’s nine NCAA distance of more than 200 yards and a viewing of the USC campus, near the intersection of Championship teams, is located on the exterior angle of more than 160 degrees.     96 DIVISION I Swimming and Diving DIVISION I 2002 Championships Highlights Texas Hooks Up Swimming Title: The Texas Longhorns pulled out their third consecutive championship in dramatic fashion, coming back to take the lead in the second-to-last event of the meet and holding on for the victory. The Longhorns finished with 512 points, 11 more than the Stanford Cardinal. That margin of victory is the closest since the advent of the 16-place scoring system in 1985. Divers made the difference for the Longhorns. Troy Dumais was named diver of the meet for the third straight time after sweeping the spring- board events and taking fifth on platform. With his win in the three- meter event, he became the first diver in NCAA history to win an event all four years. Photo by Erik S.
