Linnaeus ECO-TECH ´10 Kalmar, Sweden, November 22-24, 2010 EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE (MSW) LANDFILLS AND NON- AUTHORIZED WASTE DAMPS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Veronica Tarbaeva Dmitry Delarov Committee on Natural Resources of Leningrad region, Russia ABSTRACT A purpose was an analysis of waste disposal sites existing in the Leningrad region and a choice of facilities potentially suitable for the removal and utilization of greenhouse- and other gases. In order to achieve the purpose in view, data were collected on the arrangement of non-authorized landfills and waste dumps within the Leningrad region. The preliminary visual evaluation and instrumental monitoring were carried out for 10 facilities. The evaluation of greenhouse- and other gas emissions into the atmosphere as well as of ground water pollution near places of waste disposal was performed. A databank was created for waste disposal sites where it could be possible to organize the work on removing and utilizing of greenhouse gas. The conducted examination stated that landfills exert negative influence on the environment in the form of emissions into the atmosphere and impurities penetrating underground and surface water. A volume of greenhouse gas emissions calculated in units of СО2 – equivalent from different projects fluctuates from 63.8 to 8091.4 t in units of СО2 – equivalent. Maximum summarized emissions of greenhouse gases in units of СО2 – equivalent were stated for MSW landfills of the towns of Kirishi, Novaya Ladoga and Slantsy, as well as for MSW landfills near Lepsari residential settlement and the town of Vyborg. Ten taxa were recorded, and their taxonomic positions are shown in a table. Key words: ticks, mites, birds, Wild Animal Medical Center, Japan Epidemiological surveys are an essential conservation tool for fully understanding infectious diseases. In 2004, we began an investigation of avian parasitic diseases at the Wild Animal Medical Center of the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine of Rakuno Gakuen University, Japan (Asakawa 2010; Asakawa et al. 2002, 2013; Hirayama et al. 2013). This paper summarizes the findings of seven publications on avian ticks and parasitic mites (Nakamura et al. 2003; Uemura et al. 2010; Yoshino et al. 2003, 2009a, b, 2011, 2013). During submission of a publication for the proceedings of the 14th International Congress of Acarology, Kyoto, taxonomical inconsistencies, including invalid names or synonyms for mite species, were reported to us. -

One hundred twenty-two Chrysomus ruficapillus were examined in southern Brazil, in order to research the presence of nasal mites and the parasite-host relationships. Nasal mite infections were analyzed for: presence of Ereynetidae and Rhinonyssidae considering the total number of hosts examined; Sexual maturity of males (juveniles and adults); Periods of bird collection and presence of co-infections. Were identified five taxa, four belongs to Rhinonyssidae (Sternostoma strandtmanni, Ptilonyssus sairae, P. icteridius and Ptilonyssus sp.) and one to Ereynetidae (Boydaia agelaii). Adult males were parasitized for one taxa more than juvenile males. Co-infections occurred in 22 hosts, between two, three and four taxa, belonging to Ereynetidae and Rhinonyssidae.The co-infections were more prevalent in austral autumn / winter. Nasal passages, trachea, lungs, and air sacs of 100 house sparrows captured in an urban area at the city of Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, were examined with a stereomicroscope. The mite, Sternostoma tracheacolum Lawrence, 1948 was present in the trachea and/or lungs (or both) of 13 birds (13%) at a mean intensity of 6.7 mites/infected host. Ptilonyssus hirsti (Castro & Pereira, 1947) was found in the nasal cavity of 1 sparrow (1%); coinfection was not observed in this bird. -

While conventional citizen science consists of organized campaigns to observe a particular phenomenon or species there are also many ad hoc observations of the environment in social media. These data constitute a valuable resource for `passive citizen science' - the use of social media that are unconnected to any particular citizen science program, but represent an untapped dataset of ecological value. We explore the value of passive citizen science, by evaluating species distributions using the photo sharing site Flickr. The data are evaluated relative to those submitted to the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Atlas, the largest collection of species distribution data in the UK. Our study focuses on the 1500 best represented species on NBN, and common invasive species within UK, and compares the spatial and temporal distribution with NBN data. We also introduce an innovative image verification technique that uses the Google Cloud Vision API in combination with species taxonomic data to determine the likelihood that a mention of a species on Flickr represents a given species. The spatial and temporal analyses for our case studies suggest that the Flickr dataset best reflects the NBN dataset when considering a purely spatial distribution with no time constraints. -

Ariza * RESUMEN Se presenta un estudio morfo-biométrico y una primera cita en España de las hembras de Ptilonyssus echinatus Berlese y Trouessart, 1889, utilizando dibujos de la morfología dor- sal y ventral así como una biometría completa. Asimismo, se incluye una amplia descrip- ción morfológica y biométrica (nueva para la ciencia) de la deutoninfa y protoninfa de esta especie. Los ácaros fueron recolectados de las fosas nasales de Hirundo rustica L. y Deli- chon urbica (L.) (Aves, Passeriformes, Hirundinidae) capturadas en la provincia de Gra- nada (España). El estudio de la variabilidad morfológica de los ejemplares obtenidos en Hirundo rustica y los de Delichon urbica nos lleva a pensar que las diferencias existentes entre ellos son sólo el producto de una gran variabilidad de la especie, que presenta tipos morfológicos distintos según el hospedador que parasita y la procedencia geográfica del mis- mo, y por tanto, se considera que dichas diferencias morfológicas en ningún caso pueden llevar a la creación de nuevas especies o subespecies tal como habían indicado algunos auto- res. pará- Palabras clave: Ptilonyssus echinatus, Acari, Rhinonyssidae, variabilidad, biometría, sitos nasales, aves, protoninfa, deutoninfa, España.
