1 Celebrate Priesthood • October 26, 2020 in Memory of Rita and Leo Tougas 1 Celebrate Priesthood • October 26, 2020 In Memory of Rita and Leo Tougas FATHER LAWRENCE LEW, OP 2 Celebrate Priesthood • October 26, 2020 Diocese of Worcester Office of the Bishop 49 Elm Street Worcester, Massachusetts 01609 October 26, 2020 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Welcome to our seventh annual gala celebration of the diocesan priesthood in the Diocese of Worcester – and our first VIRTUAL Celebrate Priesthood. While the Coronavirus pandemic denies us the opportunity to share in fellowship tonight, we are nonetheless grateful for the gift of the priesthood in our lives and the opportunity to share our thoughts on social media. We take this opportunity to celebrate the contributions that so many priests, both active and retired, have made to the Diocese of Worcester. Our priests are always there for us, in good times and in challenging times, including these most challenging pandemic times. By their example, they inspire us with a message of unending love that God extends to each of us through His Son, Jesus Christ. By their actions, their words and their commitment to the vocation of the priesthood, our priests have responded to a call to make God’s love manifest in our lives. We are transformed by their faithful service. Proceeds from this evening’s event benefit the Priests’ Retirement Fund, along with bequests and gifts received during the past year designating this fund. On behalf of all those who worked diligently to bring this night to fruition, I thank all of you for your generosity and willingness to help us raise needed support for priests’ retirement care. I am confident that each of you joins with me in thanking our priests by providing for their care in their senior years with dignity. Once again we are very grateful to our sponsors who are all listed in this program, along with the many advertisers and donors, some of whom made coupons available in this program book. I also wish to add my gratitude to those who made significant donations in memory of deceased priests or in honor of priests who still serve our parishioners. Their generosity is helping to make this virtual event a success. Join with me in making this annual tradition a tribute to the love and devotion we all share for our priests. May we frequently and fervently raise our voices in prayerful gratitude to Almighty God for the gift of the priesthood. With every prayerful best wish, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, S.T.D. You know first-hand how costs can add up when dealing with medical bills, assistance in living and many other issues, even before facing skilled nursing home care! In the Diocese of Worcester, the customary retirement age for diocesan clergy is 75 years of age. On average, there are 55 retired priests in our diocese who are cared for by our Diocese following many decades of service to the Catholic community in our parishes and other diocesan ministries. For more than seven years in a row, the cost of care for retired priests exceeded available resources by hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. While a committee continues to work on reducing expenses without sacrificing quality of care, the need for additional funding sources will continue to outpace the current sources without the assistance of individuals like you through support of this annual event and/or through the Legacy of Hope Capital Campaign. Many people have wondered how this initiative relates to the Retirement Fund for Religious Collection which has been taken up in the month of December for more than 30 years. That national collection is used exclusively to assist vowed religious communities (sisters, brothers and religious order priests) who face crippling retirement costs for the elderly and frail members of their communities. Canonically they operate their finances separately from the dioceses in which they served or are still serving. Join us in Celebrating the Gift of Priesthood throughout the year! The gift of the priesthood is more than a personal vocation to which each priest is called. It is a gift to the community of faith. We are never without the sacramental graces conferred on each of us, thanks to the presence of a priest. We invite you to consider ways in which you can show gratitude for the priests who have made a difference in your life as we face the financial challenge of caring for our retired priests. You are invited to make a gift to the Priests’ Retirement Fund at any time during the year to honor a priest who helped you or your family. Visit worcesterdiocese.org/celebrate- priesthood. Consider making a Legacy Gift to the Retired Priests’ Fund in your estate planning so that you make a long-term difference in the care of our retired priests. Visit worcesterdiocese.plannedgiving.org for more information. Celebrate Priesthood • October 26, 2020 7 May God bless our retired bishop and priests Retired Bishop John A. Dwyer, Lowell Thomas F. Archdiocese of Southwark Pastoral Letter Concerning the Measures to be put in place Regarding Public Worship and the Celebration of the Sacraments in Relation to the COVID-19 (Coronavius) Pandemic ‘Our help in is the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.’ Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ I wanted to write to you personally as we face the threats posed locally, nationally, and internationally by the COVID-19 Coronavirus. For so many people, including those in our parish and school communities, this situation brings uncertainty and fear. It has the capacity to bring out both the best and the worst of our human nature. Working together, in the strength of God’s grace, we must seek to ensure that the very best of our common humanity triumphs, especially for the health and well-being of the weakest, the poorest, and the most vulnerable. The Lord Jesus commanded us to love one another and to serve after His example. (Jn 13: 12-15; 13:34) Now is the time for our love to be displayed more deeply and our service to find heightened expression. Our calling as disciples is to be salt and light to the world (Mt 5:13-16) in witness to the Gospel of Christ. 1 Few of us will have witnessed circumstances such as those we are presently experiencing. It is crucial that we take the necessary measures to maximise the welfare of every person and follow the guidance and requirements of our Government and Statutory Agencies. The Bishops of England and Wales have implemented changes in how we are to practise our faith as we move forward.

  • A People Who Hope in Christ a Message from the Metropolitan
A People who Hope in Christ A Message from the Metropolitan Archbishops of the Catholic Church in England and Wales Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The radiance of the risen Lord shines upon us. At a time when so many shadows are cast into our lives, and upon our world, the light of the resurrection shines forever to renew and restore our hope. In the words of our Holy Father, Pope Francis: ‘In the midst of isolation when we are suffering from a lack of tenderness and chances to meet up, and we experience the loss of so many things, let us once again listen to the proclamation that saves us: he is risen and is living by our side.’ (27 March 2020) The impact of Covid-19, both nationally and internationally, has been immense. So much of what we take for granted has changed. Our health and physical interaction, our capacity to travel and gather, have all been affected. There is uncertainty in our future, especially with work and the country’s economy. As we know, very sadly, large numbers of people have died because of the coronavirus, and others have been or remain seriously ill. Keyworkers, not least in the National Health Service and care sectors, are serving selflessly to sustain the life of our nation. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone who is suffering because of Covid-19, and to all those battling to overcome its effects. May those who have died rest in peace and those who are bereaved find comfort. When the Prime Minister announced the lockdown, this included places of worship and therefore Catholic churches.

  • Martyrology 12 09 19
Martyrology An Anglican Martyrology - for the British Isles 1 of 160 Martyrology Introduction The base text is the martyrology compiled by Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB. Copyright © 2008 by the Monastery of the Ascension, Jerome, ID 83338 and available online at the website of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. The calendars of each of the three Anglican churches of the British isles contain varied group commemorations, I suggest these entries are read only in the province where they are observed and have indicated that by the use of italics and brackets. However, people, particularly in the Church of England, are woefully ignorant of the history of the other Anglican churches of our islands and it would be good if all entries for the islands are used in each province. The Roman dates are also indicated where these vary from Anglican ones but not all those on the Roman Calendar have an entry. The introductions to the saints and celebrations in the Anglican calendars in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Exciting Holiness, ed. Brother Tristam SSF, The Canterbury Press, 1997, have been added where a saint did not already appear in the martyrology. These have been adapted to indicate the place and date of death at the beginning, as is traditional at the reading of the martyrology. For the place of death I have generally relied on Wikipedia. For Irish, Welsh and Scottish celebrations not appearing in Exciting Holiness I have used the latest edition of Celebrating the Saints, Canterbury Press, 2004. These entries are generally longer than appear in martyrologies and probably need editing down even more than I have done if they are to be read liturgically.

Some of the key aims of The Wednesday Word include: to serve the Catholic dioceses of England and Wales and further the mission of the Catholic Church’s new evangelisation by enabling schools to spread the Word of God (Sunday’s Gospel) - Good News - to primary school parents, carers and their families to make real the Diocesan mission statement: “taking to heart the last words of the Lord Jesus, we will go into the world to proclaim the Good News to the whole of creation” to create a new form of lively weekly contact between the Church and parents who may be adrift from going to Church; which includes a weekly invitation to the celebration of the Eucharist whilst their child is connected to the life of the Catholic school to help school parents and families to draw closer to Christ and his Church by educating them about scripture and Catholic faith through The Wednesday Word ensuring that all supporting material is overseen by Catholic scripture scholars and endorsed with an imprimatur to strengthen the school’s Catholic ethos and promote this new way of collaborative ministry which enhances the home, school and parish partnership and encourages Christian unity in mixed denominational school families through a shared reflection on the Gospel to create a new weekly opportunity for Christ centred family conversation, evening prayer and relationships to be strengthened through The Wednesday Word a “Sunday Gospel Family Time” which is based on the Benedictine prayer custom of Lectio Divina to encourage and enable parishioners to pray for their parish school and its families, whilst also making their own fruitful preparation for the coming Sunday Mass, through the parish church version of The Wednesday Word Endorsements from Church leaders: Archbishop Patrick Kelly Liverpool: The Wednesday Word provides a wonderful opportunity for faith development and will serve to enrich the relationships within the home/school/parish partnership.
